German Jewish Emigration to British Columbia #germany

Marcus Poulin <nanophotonic@...>

Does anyone know if there actually was a great influx of Germans Jews
to British Columbia?

That might explain more of the story on how my Great-Grandfather actually
got there. Thanks all,

BAUMANN in Bavaria #germany

Elizabeth Levy <levyliz@...>

Dear Friends,

A long lost branch of the KISSINGER family (>from the early 1800s) was
uncovered a couple of years ago with the help of the Jewishgen Wurzburg
database. Then a branch within that branch was discovered more recently
here in Israel. It's all very exciting. What's more, two of the cousins
from that branch have been infected by the genealogy bug and are searching
for more information.

We have come into new information and I wanted to share it with you with
hopes that maybe we'll find a connection to someone else out there or more
tips on the family.

Babette KISSINGER (b 1858 in Gnodstadt), daughter of Nathan KISSINGER and
Mathilda LAUBER and sister of Jeanette and Karoline KISSINGER. married Loeb
BAUMANN (born in Adelsberg) circa 1886. This we know.

We found out almost by accident that Loeb BAUMANN is buried in Laudenbach.
We don't know if they lived there. It seems that he died circa 1904.

During the research, my cousin was in touch with a man in Gemunden or
Adelsberg who just happened to mention that Loeb and Babette had two sons -
Hermann and Gustav! We have not seen any documents yet to verify these
facts but perhaps in due course . . . . That is why I write today.

Does anyone know of a BAUMANN family in the general area of Adelsberg,
Gemunden or Laudenbach, Bavaria?

Do the names Hermann and Gustav BAUMANN ring any bells?

Since we don't know when they were born, we can only guestimate. I would
say that they should have been about 40s or 50s during the Holocaust. They
might have had families.

Does anyone have any ideas for us? Thanks for your help. Shana Tova,

Elizabeth Levy Mevassaret Zion, Israel <levyliz@smile.net.il>

Recently there has been much discussion about Researcher Alex SALM, who
compiled many Yad Vashem pages of Testimony for German Jews.

I can confirm that Alex SALM who was born on 18 May 1922 in Wegberg is my=
fourth cousin twice removed, but he is not personally known to me.

Alex SALM is also related to fellow Gersig Member Hannelore
GOETTLING-JAKOBY >from Hamburg, and we all descend >from Salomon Sander Cain
of Bedburdyk which is today better known as Bedburg, and lies between Koeln / Cöln
and Moenchengladbach.

I had a postal address for Alex SALM and wrote to him in November 2004, but
did not receive any reply.

I am happy to be in contact with other researchers in the Koeln / Cologne
area as I have been researching my family history extensively all over the
Rhineland area.
Exceptionally, in one case, I have traced back to my seventh great
grandfather Nathan Isaac, who died in about 1747 in Muelheim am Rhein.

"Jewish Cemeteries, Synagogues, and Mass Grave Sites in Ukraine" - 2005 US Commission report #galicia

Renee Steinig <rsteinig@...>

Visiting the website of the United States Commission for the Preservation of
America's Heritage Abroad (www.heritageabroad.gov) today, I found a link to
their recent report, "Jewish Cemeteries, Synagogues, and Mass Grave Sites in
Ukraine" (www.heritageabroad.gov/reports/doc/survey_ukraine_2005.pdf). The
illustrated 180-page report includes sections on Jewish heritage in Ukraine,
Jewish sites in Ukraine, and preservation efforts and issues. Several pages
discuss the constituencies who care about the location, access, and
condition of Jewish cemeteries in Ukraine -- primarily Hasidim and Jewish
genealogists -- and quote several of our colleagues.

More than half of the book is made up of these appendices:

- an alphabetical list of the localities surveyed by the Commission, with
oblast in parentheses

- lists of the synagogues, cemeteries, mass graves, and Holocaust memorials
that were surveyed (listed alphabetically by oblast, then town)

- contact individuals, institutions, and organizations

At least three of Ukraine's 24 oblasts -- Ivano-Frankivska, Lvivska, and
Ternopilska -- include towns that were once in Galicia. (I'm hoping that a
geography maven out there will tell us whether any Galician towns are in
nearby Chernivetska oblast.)

According to the website, the Commission posts complete data on the Internet
via the IAJGS's International Jewish Cemetery Project
(www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/e-europe). Additional information is also
available >from uscommission@heritageabroad.gov .

Three earlier Commission surveys are also available online, including

- "Survey of Historic Jewish Monuments in Poland,"
2nd revised edition, 1995

Despite the broad mission that its name suggests, the Commission's focus is
endangered Jewish sites in Central and Eastern Europe.
