Seeking: Abraham LACHOWITSKY #general

Jackie Wasserstein

I am seeking information about my great-grandfather, Abraham LACHOWITZSKY (b.
approx 1875). He also used the surname LASKOWITZ. He deserted my
great-grandmother Leah KHMARNA LACHOWITSKY in 1903. They were living in New York
City. In the 1930s Abraham was living with a cousin in Seattle, Washington. He
was orginally >from Slutsk, Belarus.

Ring any bells? Thanks.

Seeking: FRIENDLICH or Related Name #general

Arnold Samlan

I recently discovered my great-great-grandfather's name: Joseph/Yosef FRIENDLICH
(or close spelling). While this is all the information that I have as of the
moment, his daughter, Rosie (Freindlich) SAMLAN came to Montreal, most likely in
the 1890's. She was widowed at a young age, and died herself in 1915, leaving an
only son, my grandfather.

The only information I have >from my family is that its roots are ">from Romania,"
which, in that time period, could be Romania proper or any of a few other nearby
countries.

Anyone with the last name of Freindlich (or a closely related name) who believes
that they might have a family connection, or might have other information, please
contact me.

Best wishes for a shana tova,

Arnold D. Samlan

Seeking: GREENBURG/GREENBERG, Varet St. Brooklyn #general

Joel Ballon <westview.jjgen@...>

My grandfather Joseph BALLON's manifest, >from December 1904 indicates he was
coming to a cousin, R. GREENBURG (or GREENBERG) at 114 Varet Street in Brooklyn,
Ny.

His naturalization papers show he was born in Orgerve, Russia. His wife, Rachel
Lena BASS was born in Kalome, Russia.

I'm looking for descendents of that Greenburg family.

I realize this is a needle in a haystack, but it is all the information I have.

Please reply directly to me, by email.

Seeking: SAVIN #general

LJTRS@...

Hello,

I am having a problem in finding my husband's great grandfather's information.
His name was Jacob SAVIN and I found he immigrated to the US in 1891 under the
name Yankel SAWIN. He married Sarah RITCH who was >from Drisa, Vitebsk, Russia in
1897 in the US. They moved to Montville, Connecticut and had four children
between 1898 and 1909. I found them on the 1900 and 1910 censuses. Then by 1912,
Jacob abandons the family never to be seen again. No one knows where he went or
what happened to him. There were rumors he died between 1912 and 1918 and in
fact Sarah states she is a widow on the 1920 census, although that could have
been her wishful thinking. Does anybody know how I can find anything on him? I
have hit a wall.

An interesting note is that on the 1900 census, Jacob has a baby named Bessie but
he also has a niece named Bessie Savin who was 18 years old at the time. No one
in the family knows who she was and she never appears on any other censuses. I
figure that if I can find her immigration information (it said she immigrated in
1894) then I might be able to find some of his family that immigrated as well.
But I have not been able to find her at all. I believe her Hebrew name would
have been Peshe.

This family is a mystery.
Thanks for your attention and help.

Seeking: GUREVITCH families from around Vilna #general

Roberta Sheps

My great-grandmother's maiden name was Rochel Leah GURVITCH (all spelling
variations considered). Her married name was BELOVITSKY. After marrying my
great grandfather, Zalman Hirsch Belovitsky, she lived in Papiskes (aka Popishok),
which is about 20 m. south of Vilna.

Popishok was too small to hold a Jewish community and I am operating on the
assumption that one of my great-grandparents must have come >from somewhere not too
far away. (There was only one other Jewish family there, the GOLDBERGs, and one of
my great-aunts married into that family).

Does anyone have any connections with Gurvitch's (or HOROWITZes)>from the Vilna
area who might have been my great-grandmother's family?

There is a name SOKOL in a column next to "page" to listed as "Sec'y", who was

Most importantly, how does one procure the transcript of these hearings? This

Experience With Missing Info from EIDB? #general

I am looking for someone that may have had trouble finding information >from the
Ellis Island Database? Several months ago I looked up the EIDB for information on
my grandmother, mother and uncle. They arrived on the same ship and the manifest
was list on 2 pages. But the pages referenced did not have the ship in question.
I just tried once again with the result that there was no manifest available. All
the other information such as the certificate and other passengers was available.
If you solved this problem, how did you achieve the results? Were you able to
query their webmaster? How did you accomplish this? Please respond privately.

Cemetaries and Public Data #general

AJSAL64@...

Matt asked why the cemeteries don't make their data public. Phyllis replied that
there's a reason....and it's a financial one. In business there needs to be a
financial reason to fund a project; otherwise you will soon go out of business.

There is another reason. In order for a cemetary to make their data public, 'read
online', they need to have their data on a computer database. It is only the
largest and newest cemetaries that use computers for all their burials. Some have
split their records using computers for current burials and card catalogues for
older burials. Smaller/older cemetaries use card catalogues or register books for
all burials.

It works for them and for their business needs.

JOWBR has a project to create this database for all Jewish Cemetaries. I have been
working with Alice Gould and many volunteers for over 6 years on the old
cemetaries of Newark and we are not done yet!

Perhaps you may know of a cemetary that could use indexing.
