For many years, Avram Rosenfeld was referred to as Reverend Rosenfeld when
he served the congregation at Kinloss Synagogue (London) as Chazan even
though he was
a Rabbi in his own right and went on to be Chief Rabbi of New Zealand. I
always understood that this was because Rabbi Gelles was the official
Rabbi of Kinloss and you couldn't have two Rabbis at the same Shul.

The recent Guardian obituary of Rev Isaac Levy
http://www.guardian.co.uk/religion/Story/0,2763,1475185,00.html says that
it was considered more important that the minister could give a good
sermon, could teach
at the cheder and knew the right thing to say to the sick or to the
bereaved, than that they were a rabbi.

Nick Landau
That is clearly not the case now - Stanmore Synagogue has a number of
rabbonim.

Maybe it was the fact that he was chazan and not communal rabbi. After all a
professional might have a semicha but not be called rabbi.

Interestingly Avraham Rosenfeld's son, Lionel, has up to recently been the
Minister at Bournemouth Synagogue. He doesn't have semicha and he would have
been known as Reverend (shortened to Rev).

Lionel Rosenfeld's predecessor at Bournemouth, Geoffrey Shisler, received
his semicha whilst at Bournemouth and his title changed >from Rev to Rabbi.

When he moved >from London to Bournemouth he moved up >from Chazan to
Minister.

Re: YB translation questions #yizkorbooks

Kovitz, Sonia <Sonia.Kovitz@...>

GEZERD - Yiddish acronym equivalent of Russian OZET (association for
rural placement of Jewish toilers), a Stalinist group founded in
Australia in the 1930s by Polish Jews who had emigrated there. they
endorsed Jewish agric. settlement in the USSR.

"geirshnt" -- probably related to "ershnt" (at first) and in this
context means "activated". Just a guess.

"Actually, the society geirshnt the closed "gezerd"
and popularized the idea
of the Jewish Autonomous Region in Birobidzhan [in
the far east of the
Soviet Union]."=20

There are 36 references for "Amado roumanie juif" on Google.

Apparently there is a Maurice Amado lecture at UCLA

I imagine this refers to the same man
