Visiting Jewish Cemeteries in NYC #general

I have searched the discussion group archives, but have not seen anyone
discuss what it is like to visit the offices of one of the Jewish
cemeteries in NY. I would guess that one would call ahead and make sure
that some staff were available, but what kind of access to burial records
could one expect to have at the office? Are the staff generally patient
or are they inundated with requests for help in locating burial sites,
benevolent society sections, etc.? Do they let you look through records
yourself or must you rely upon their patience in searching through their
records? I only have some sketchy information about some of my relatives
and I am wondering basically if I go to a cemetery office if they will
likely be of kind assistance or whether they need very specific
information to assist. How much of this could be done over the phone or
by mail? Any guidance in this regard would be helpful.

Plot numbers #warsaw #poland

Bill Celmaster <bill.celmaster@...>

In trying to establish connections between various family branches in
Warszawa -- especially mid 1800's -- I've been noticing some clustering by
plot number. So I'll find that one person lived in, for example, plot
number 1797 in the year 1840 and another person of interest to me lived in
that plot number in the year 1855.

So here's my questions: (1) were these the same "house"? (2) what
constitutes a plot -- should I think of this as an apartment building? a
city block? (3) according to the Warszawa Homeowner's website, I have found
that house number Gesia 6 corresponds bot both plot number 2287d and to plot
number 2738 (depending on data source). Why?

Thanks for the information.

I am amazed at the response to my latest posting . I have had many
translations, including two complete ones. Two arrived BEFORE I received
the note that the file of my grandfather's tombstone was on view and so I
had not had time to post the message that it was on view!

I want to thank everyone for their prompt and most helpful response.

THANKS
