There is a Robert Buchler living in Israel who wrote
extensively on the town of Topolcany, Slovakia.
Presumably, he is >from SLovakia himself and may be

Re: SATORALJAUJHELY JEWISH RECORDS #hungary

Lynn Saul <lynnsaul@...>

There is some information about the reason for the split, although I don't
have time just now to check out what sources I may have (may do so later, or
contact me privately.) I first heard of it in person in Hungary >from the
lay leader of the Nyireghaza (sorry about spelling) congregation when I was
there in 1997.
Basically, the Neolog (Reform/Conservative) group split form the Orthodox
(the Budapest Dohany U. synagogue is Neolog) and the Hasidim split >from the
"regular Orthodox," each over liberal or strict rituals and interpretations.
Also the Hasidim have a distinct approach to Jewish life and ritual which is
very different >from the Mitnagid (Litvak) or German approach, or >from Modern
Orthodoxy today. The Status Quo group in Hungary, a unique approach to
denominations in Judaism (yes, it really called itself "Status Quo") just
wanted things to be they were before the split--you were Jewish, you could
observe or not any way you wanted, but you all went to shul together and
were Jewish!

Andres, this is very interesting. My gggm, Regina Schreiber, and ggf
Samuel Schreiber immigrated to the United States in 1887, very possibly
from Satoraljaujhely. Are there any histories that tell why this
division happened? I'm wondering if this prompted their leaving.

Thanks,

Dan Breslau

Seeking Death Place For Isadore Rakoff-New Montefiore Cemetery-6/14/1938 #general

Hello To All

I am trying to get a death record for a great-great-uncle of mine, but
am having trouble. His name was Isadore RAKOFF. He was brother to my
great-grandfather David RAKOFF. I have found out that Isadore is buried
along with his son in New Montefiore Cemetery in Suffolk County New
York. I also have his date of death provided by the
cemetery(6/14/1938), But they could not provide the place of death. I
am assuming he died in new york, since he is buried in New york, but
that is not always the case. I am seeking help >from anyone who might be
