Match factory Ekatarineslaw #ukraine

Sally Altschuler <sally@...>

Dear friends
This is the first time I use the SIG, and I'm not quite sure, that I'm
doing it right. Anyway, I guess someone will advise me if needed.
I am trying to trace my grandmothers family in Ukraine. I know this:

My great-great grandfathers name was Berel CHISVEROVITZ.
My great grandfather was Baruch CHISVEROVITZ who married Chaye Lea
MITTELMAN
from here they apparantly changed their name to CHISVER and had the
following row of children
Channe CHISVER b. 1886 in Ukraine, married to unknown LIFSCHITZ
Manje CHISVER b. 1888
Dunja CHISVER - my fathers mother - b. 1890, married to Feiwel
ALTSCHULER
Sinke CHISVER b. 1892
Luba CHISVER b.1894
Salomon CHISVERb. 1896
Yosef CHISVER b. 1897

My grandmother was born in a town called Antonevka, probably in the
Ekatarineslaw area. There are several of them. We know, that they had a
small farm, and that there was a match factory close by, that employed
many of the citizens.

Berel CHISVEROVITZ was said to be working in forests, but there is not
and wasn't either forests in that area. Therefor I think, that the
family came down >from north, when Tsar Alexander the first gave
financial support and freedom of military service to jewish families who
wanted to settle there.

If anyone can provide me with further information on this, I'd be happy,
especially about the match factory.

Best wishes

As a female can I check my ancestry on my father's side? Is it
possible to check for any Jewish genetic markers in my heritage?

Kaunitz Herrschaft, Bohemia #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

This discussion started because Karen Cecilio believed her husband's line
of Jewish KAUNITZ may have left Moravia because of the Familianten laws, and
travelled, as many did, to Hungary, taking the name KAUNITZ as that is where
they may have originated.

I have already discussed Kanitz [sic] and Austerlitz in Moravia - the latter
was the main seat of the famous Kaunitz family, although like many of these
wealthy, influential families, they may well have had estates elsewhere.

I omitted to mention that in Bohemia there was also a Kaunitz [Kounice]
Herrschaft in the Kaurzimer/Kourimer Kreis. This Herrschaft comprised of six
villages: Kaunitz [Kounice], Wykann [Vykan], Mochow [Mochov], Nehwizd [Nehvizdy],
Horauschau [Horousany] and Daubeck [Doubek].

There also appears to be a village called Kanitz in the Bidschover Kreis,
Bohemia. Only one family - that of Abraham TAUSEK, a potash extractor with
a wife and three daughters, had their Schutz in that village, but they lived
in the Herrschaft of Neubidschau. [Novy Bydzov].

So the names Kaunitz and Kanitz are not exclusive to Moravia, but are also
found in Bohemia.

Over the past year, I have forwarded two requests for Italian translations
to a relative who is fluent in the language. In neither case has the person
requesting assistance acknowledged receiving the help, nevermind expressing
any appreciation. As a result, my relative has requested I not send any
further calls for help to him. Everyone's the loser when we neglect common
courtesy.

It is with deep sorrow that I convey condolences to Dr. Perets (Percy) Mett
and his family of London on the tragic loss of his son Shmuel Eliyahu
(Hashem Yinkom Damo) who was murdered by an Arab terrorist in Jerusalem. Dr.
Mett is a member of the committee of RavSIG and is known for his
genealogical researches, particularly Chassidic families.

Those who attended the International Conference on Jewish Genealogy in
Jerusalem last year may recall Perets.

May the Almighty comfort him and his family together with all the mourners
for Tzion and Yerushalayim.

Byelorussian life #general

Aliza <alizam@...>

Dear Genners,
This is a one time posting about a book published last year that
authentically describes life in a Byelorussian shtetl in the 1880s and in
Lodz in the 1890s.
The narrator, Zalman Vendrof, once enjoyed a wide following by the Yiddish
reading public.
Further details about this first major English translation of his work,
titled "When It Comes To Living", can be obtained by googling "Vendrof" or the
book title.

I have no economic or other personal interest in the distribution of this
book.

Shabbat Shalom,
