I have posted three documents on viewmate and will be very grateful for
any
translation.

The items are VM6753 - VM6754 and VM6755
I would suggest that you indicate in your posting which language the
Viewmate items are in. It turns out that one is Hebrew, and the other two
are Russian.

I suggest that you post these to JewishGen. There is naturally a far greater
pool of languages in this group.

I know for a fact that has been recently a native Russian speaker >from
Israel posting there.

Dear Genners and Siggers,
My name is Jacob Rosen >from Jerusalem. Researching my
maternal family KOENIGSBUCH from
Brzesko,Galicia(nowadays Poland).Had amazing
breakthroughs since I started >from scratch about 3
years ago.The main discovery was that there were many
2nd and 3rd cousins
of my grandfather who moved to Germany between
1890-1915 about whom we had no idea.I managed to track
down many of them(most left to Palestine when Hitler
came to power).
However,I still face a hard nut:one of those cousins,
Aron(Adolf)KOENIGSBUCH who moved to Hamburg had 2 sons
Rolf Simon (b.1929)and Kurt Max(b.1931).Both were on
the Kindertransport and survived.
In the late 1940 both joined the British Army and in
the 1960s Rolf Simon lived in the USA in New Jersey
and Kurt Max who probably changed his name to Max
Harper lived in Toronto,Canada.
All my attempts through the Kindertransport
Association, Association of Jewish Refugees, Hamburg
State Archives and the Wiener Library brought me only
to the end of the 1960s. All were very cooperative and
disclosed what they have or know but to no avail. I am
still checking through the British Army which is very
protective.
I presume that both brothers are still around and
count on the new members of the lists who may have
bumped into one of them.
In Polish there is a popular saying that sometimes
even a blind chicken may find a seed... Who knows.
Thanks

Hi all,

I am a descendent of the RUBIN family who are Kohanim. I was told for many
years that the RUBIN family who are Kohanim are direct descendents of Rabbi
Shabse HaCohen (ShaCh). I have contacted many RUBIN families who are
Kohanim and they all told me the same thing that they are direct decadents
of the (ShaCh). A relative of mine mentioned to me that there was a person
who lived in Nyiregyhaza by the named Yackov Rubin who had a family tree of
the direct linage to the (ShaCh) but unfortunately it was destroyed during
the war and Yackov Rubin didn't survive.

If anyone knows any connection of the RUBIN family to the (ShaCh) or any
RUBINS that are Kohanim, please let me know.

Thank You

book of photos of Jewish life in Eastern Europe around 1915 #poland

Ruth Wielgosz <ruth_wielgosz@...>

I have come across a book that will be of interest to genealogists
who are collecting general information on their ancestors' places of
residence:

_Yiddishland_ by Gerard Silvain, Henri Minczeles, Donna Wiemann
Ginkgo Press, Corte Madera, CA: published Oct. 1999
ISBN 1584230185
[there is also an earlier version published in French]

The book consists of reproductions of postcards, collected by one of
the authors, that depict Jewish life in Eastern Europe. The
photographs were predominantly taken by WWI German army photographers
who followed the troops eastward, documenting the war, including the
quaint locals in the invaded regions! One picture that was
particularly interesting to me was of a German army rabbi chaplain
conducting services for a crowd of Jewish soldiers, all wearing those
helmets with the spear point on top. Most of the pictures, though,
are of "eastern" Jews doing everyday things.

Table of contents:
Vilna
Lodz
The Street
Restaurants, Shops, Trades
Schools, Hospitals, Hospices, Cemetaries
Synagogues
Religion and Festivities
Culture and Politics
Anti-Semitism, Pogroms, Anti-Jewish Organizations
To the Four Corners of the World

Unfortunately there is no index, although many of the photos are
captioned with the name of a particular town. You just have to leaf
through the whole book to find pictures relevant to your interests.

The introduction claims that the concept of the postcard was invented
by a Jew!

Enjoy,

Ruth Wielgosz

Subject: Lviv Historical Archive Information
From: "Pamela Weisberger" <pweisberger@hotmail.com>
Date: Mon, 08 Aug 2005 11:07:53 -0700

I'd like to share some information just received >from a friend in
Ukraine about the theft of documents >from the Lviv archives and
their subsequent closure for inventory:

The Ukrainian News Agency, Kyiv, Ukraine, in June reported that
police seized over 1,500 documents stolen >from the Lviv state
historical archives >from a 60-year-old resident of Lviv. It was
established that the materials were stolen >from the archives during
the last 5-7 years and the police also stated: "This theft would
not
have been possible without theemployees of the archives." Police
carried out more than 100 searches and interrogations regarding
this
case, including several prominent political figures.

The criminal case relating to the theft in the archives was opened
on December 24, 2004 after two collectors arrived in Lviv with
documents that were stolen >from the archives and approached archive
personnel to assess their value. The archives employees, stating
that the cost of the stolen documents was several million euros,
explained that many of these documents were gifted out during the
election campaign of Viktor Yanukovych to a museum, which triggered
the closure to the public and stock-taking inventory in the
archives. During the inventory the police established new cases of
theft >from the archives.
<snip>

Does this mean that supporters of Yanukovych within the Ukrainian
government enlisted Lviv archive employees to steal archive documents
for use as kick-backs to Yanukovych campaign
contributors/supporters?!

I have tried to find more information on this situation, but have
found nothing in English about the involvement of the Yanukovych
campaign.

Matthew Bielawa has posted the Lviv archives' official press releases
on his Galician genealogy website, along with a few of his own
comments: http://www.halgal.com/TsDIAL_theft.html

I also found this article: http://eng.maidanua.org/node/372 It is
followed by several links to Ukrainian- and Russian-language news
articles.

Could somebody on the list who reads Ukrainian and/or Russian please
check these links to see if they have additional details on the
thefts and their investigation?

Thanks,

Request for Translations from Russian - Viewmate #poland

Bill Celmaster <bill.celmaster@...>

Hi everyone,

I've had good help in translating these two documents in Cyrillic, but
I'm interested in a couple of details which might require a more complete
translation.

Death record of Pinkus Celmajster
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=6757

I think I have a pretty good translation of this, but there is one detail of
great interest. It appears that the document states that Pinkus' wife had
the maiden name Baumwohl and that the document also states that Pinkus'
mother had the maiden name Baumwohl. The witness is also Baumwohl. Could
someone please verify the details of all this. Also, what information -- if
anyone -- is provided about Pinkus's descendants, about his birthplace, or
about his parents? Who is the 'witness' in relationship to Pinkus or his
wife? (Brother?)

I believe that Pinkus had a son, Rachmil. There is a Rachmil in this
document, but with a different surname.

*****************

Death record of Perla Celmajster
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=6758

Perla was the daughter of Rifka Lothe (m. to Noach Celmajster) -- my
grandmother. This record is the only one I've found that might have
information about Rifka's father. The 'witness' reporting the death was
Iser Lothe. Does this document have any indication of how Iser was related
to Rifka? I'm guessing that perhaps he was the father. What was his
address? The address of Rifka?

Thanks for the help,
Bill Celmaster
