Many thanks for your note regarding the 1911 Canadian Census. Unfortunately,
there is not yet a name index, and thus far we have not located an address at which they've lived in Montreal. Hopefully, I will be able to get more information through other research that I'm working on. Arnold D. Samlan West Hempstead, NY

OOO or are they illiterate
#poland
Greg Tuckman
Hello group,
There has been a big discussion as to what 000 means. While not an expert, my understanding is that it means our ancestors could not write in Polish. In my history I have records that are signed 000 and records signed by the same people in Yiddish. It simply means that they could not sign their names in Latin characters, so they were considered illiterate by those in charge. They were still fluent in Hebrew and Yiddish. Again, not an expert, but his is what I have seen. Greg Tuckman Tempe, AZ, USA

Contradiction in documents
#lithuania

Dear SIG members,
To my request I received >from the LITHUANIAN STATE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES at Vilna the following list: --start quote THE VITAL RECORDS OF SEDUVA JEWISH COMMUNITY AND PANEVEZYS RABBINATE 1. Aronas Steinas, son of Chielis and Chana, married to Etel Sera(aite), daughter of Rachmielis and Sara-Feige in 1925; 2. Rachmielis, son of Aaronas Shteinas and Eta nee Ser9aite), was born in 1932; etc --end quote When the detailed documents arrived I found out that no. 2 is not Aaronas as written in the list, but Avraham. To my inquiery at the archives I received an apology for the mistake they made "because the names are similar". However a family member who knew these people testifies that the name they used is Aharon (Aaronas) and "nobody knows who Avraham is ". May I assume that he had both names and only by hazard was one or the other written in the documents? Many Thanks, Anat Rosen Abirim, Israel

Birth records for Shavil
#lithuania
Irene K. <impromptus2002@...>
Birth records for the town Shavil province of Siauliai
are in the State Historical Archives in Vilnius. Meanwhile I have checked my files and the 1878 records are missing. My advice is to write directly to Galina Baranova (Deputy department manager) in order to be sure that birth records of that year either exist or vanished. If you need any other assistance, please, contact me privately. Irene Kudish iresearcher@gmail.com Tel-Aviv MODERATOR'S NOTE: Contact information for Galina Baranova can be found in the LitvakSIG Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), linked >from the LitvakSIG homepage www.jewishgen.org/litvak/

Re: Shavil; Siauliai

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>
Locating Lithuanian vital records (births, marriages and deaths) is not the
same as looking, for instance, in Western European, American, Canadian, Australian, Israeli or South African archives where there are comprehensive existing records which go back many generations or even centuries. Due to wars, fires, and other such instances, the Lithuanian records can be spotty or non-existent for many shtetls and, in the case of females, there may be little there. In some cases, such as the records for Kupiskis, Lithuania, the pre-1920 birth records only exist for 1900-1910. There are no existing birth records prior to 1900. In addition, many of the years between 1900-1910 are missing. This leaves a very big hole for research. The only way we have been able to fill this is to search and cross-reference the marriage and death records if they exist as well as the family lists, revision lists, etc., which mention our families and give ages. In addition, according to the "Jewish Vital Records, Revision Lists and Other Jewish Holdings in the Lithuanian Archives" by Harold Rhode & Sallyann Amdue Sack, published in 1996 by Avotaynu, Inc., there are no birth, marriage or death records for Siauliai, although there are various other records. Since the publication of this resource, there have been a number of additional finds of records in the Archives, but none that I know of for Siauliai vital records.
