Re: WWI records #germany

Andreas J Schwab <andreas.schwab@...>

Dear Janet,
Germany at the beginning of the 20th century was a confederation, and
each state had its own military organization with its own military
archive. In order to find any records, you must first know to which
state the unit belonged where the soldier served. Generally, it is
virtually impossible to find any record if you do not know the exact unit.

Visit the following website to learn more about German WWI records:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/genealogy/german-faq/part3/section-1.html

For Austria, contact the Austrian War Archive in Vieanna:
http://www.oesta.gv.at/ebestand/ekv/efr1_kv.htm

Here is an outline of what can be found in the Austrian War Archive
(in German):

Hi,
Robert Strumwasser states on Tue, 9 Aug 2005
"I recently came across the name "Szejma Zmarl" in the
1939 Census of Biala Podlaska. After searching the Given
Names DataBase (GNDB), I've concluded that "Zmarl" is
"Shmarya." Does this appear to be correct? As for
"Szejma," I'm guessing that it's "Shmuel," as
the GNDB gives one Yiddish nickname as "Shmie."
Does anyone have any different/better thoughts?"

Just yesterday I did a soundex search for my
g-g-grandmother Sima Milbauer and the names Szejma and
Szijma came up.

Entity Scheimer, Deborah uttered this profundity:

Webmasters beware: you
should be hiding your online family histories behind passwords that you
only reveal to relatives and others you can trust. Alternatively, you
can put "Living XXX" (where XXX is the appropriate surname) with no
other revealing information for anyone living. The benefit of using the
"Living XXX" option is that your family history is available to
Google-type searches so that potential relatives can find you.
I will soon be publishing my family's genealogy so it will be searchable by
Google. I do plan to remove personal information for living people, such as
birthdates. As a webmaster concerned with privacy this seems appropriate.

Am I on the right track here? As Yehuda said, I want to facilitate finding
ancestors to others searching online, as I am the first to ever catalogue
the family tree.

Any advice welcome.

I reckon these are not Jewish names, but biblical names - often used in

Negative search for grandparents' marriage certificate from NY Vital Records Dept #general

Debbie Skolnik

I have hit a bit of a brick wall in my search for my
grandparents' marriage certificate in either Brooklyn
or Manhatten >from 1907-1909. Using these dates is
based on info >from the 1910 Federal census, which
indicates that they were married two years when the
census was taken.

Should I expand the years searched as well as other
locations? So far as I know, they only ever lived in
Brooklyn, but of course they could have been married
somewhere else.

Part of the problem is that my grandfather has an
extremely common name -- Barnet/Barney Cohen -- and I
haven't yet definitely found his immigration record
anywhere (Ellis Island, pay genealogy web sites). I'm
quite frustrated with this as well. I'm thinking he
probably came over under another name, but none of the
"sounds like" search tools have brought up anyone I
can definitely identify as my grandfather.

I'd be very grateful for some suggestions to help me
get past this roadblock -- thanks in advance.

Peshe (Bessie) Solutuszkyn Cohen
KISSIN -- Kiev-Brooklyn, NY became Barney or Barnet Cohen at some
point
