Is this a Romanian place name?
#romania
Mark Vigder <mark.vigder@...>
I found my great-grandfather and his family in the Hamburg emigration
list. Apparently they left in 1902 >from Hamburg. The following information was included: Nationality: Rumanien Place of Residence: Vulpasesci What is this Place of Residence? What, or where, is Vulpasesci? I thought it would be the town they came from, but I can't find any town with this name in Romania or in the ShtetlSeeker. Moreover, they supposedly came >from Iasi. Rechitsa was an uezd (district) in Minsk guberniya (province).
To my knowledge, Nezhin was not in Rechitsa uezd. However, Jews were registered in the town they came >from and may have had permission to live elsewhere without changing their official registration. I can only decipher a few words, although the Hebrew month and year Adar 5565 are very clear. I would appreciate some help with translation. Please respond privately to me at: linzmarg@msu.edu Thank you. Maggie Linz Okemos, Michigan <linzmarg@msu.edu>

In response to Shari Kantrows posting about the townIt was common in Austrian Galicia to adopt 'nice' family names, by paying often extra bribes, derived >from the flowers or precious or semiprecious stones such as: Lilenthal, Edelstein, Diamant, Saphir, Bernstein or Rosenthal. I am a bit surprised that you have seen this small Galician town in Rohatyn district (population just below 4,000 residents) - on many maps. Town was established in mid 18th century by one of the Polish magnates and since it was properly planned it was named as a Bursztyn. If one would like to trace surname Bernstein to some particular town name, the Baltic region should be considered, since this is where amber is usually located. There were four settlements in Western and Eastern Prussia (now in Poland or Lithuania) known as Bernstein: Bernstein, Kreis Regenwalde, Pomerania (currently Izbiska, Szczecin) Bernstein, Kreis Soldin, Brandenburg (currently, Pelczyce near Pyrzyce, Gorzow) Bernstein Forsterei, Kreis Schwetz (currently Lipinki, Kujawy) Bernsteinbruch, near Memel (Klaipeda), Lithuania Alexander Sharon Calgary, Ab

Re: KALONYMUS Family - Sephardic Roots?

Yisrael Asper
I see now that just as the Babylonian communities or any other
community wouldn't have made someone Sephardic or Ashkenazic until a later period when the two major rites of the Yerushalmi and the Bavli spread so the Kalonymus Family, of which I am also a descendant, was in Italy too early to be anything but PreSefardic so Rashi on his mother's side could not claim Sefardic descent >from the Kolonymus family. Later the original Italian Jewish community descendents are lumped like all NonAshkenazim as Sefardim by outsiders. Yisrael Asper yisraelasper@comcast.net Pittsburgh PA

Great Genealogical Research Tool - Patents
#general
Jane Reifer <cluttercontrol@...>
Just thought people might like to try patent searches as a tool for
genealogical research; I have been amazed to use these searches to find information about relatives I didn't know existed, and fill in little gaps of information for those I already know about. I used to search individually at the US Patents site, the Canadian site, etc., but just learned you can do a free search of several international sites all at once, at: http://www.surfip.gov.sg/sip/site/sip_home.htm Just enter your surname into the Show News - Search Patents Web banner in the middle of the page. They also have a free membership level, but I found the banner search pretty comprehensive, sometimes even with images of the applications. These are the databases searched: WIPO/PCT - World Intellectual Property Organization - Patent Cooperation Treaty IPO Singapore European Patent Office UK Patent Office United States PTO JPO-IPDL Canada IPO Taipei Patents Index I have no commercial or other interest in the site. Best of luck in your research, Jane Ehrlich Reifer Fullerton, California, USA Researching: REIFER (all countries); REISCH (Ukraine); ROESSLER / RESSLER (Ukraine); HOROWITZ (Horodenka, Chernivtsi [Ukraine]; SPASSER (Ukraine); HERZ, DAVIDSON, SCHOEN (Hungary); EHRLICH (Hungary, Czechoslovakia )

I have hit the proverbial 'brick wall' in trying to trace the LANDAU
roots of my family. My great grandmother, Katie Paulina Landau was born in 1879 in the Brest area. Her father was Hirsel Landau (DOB unknown- Wife Unknown) probably >from the same area. Have tried everything that a genealogical novice like myself can do and would greatly appreciate it if anybody tracing a LANDAU tree could inform me if they appear in it somewhere. Again, many thanks in anticipation. Philip Moore
