I have replied to Jack privately but I thought that there were some
interesting general points which others might wish to comment on.

Indeed I did a search on Neunkirchen and 10 such places come up on multimap.

Having said that I presume that it was the Neunkirchen near Bad
Mergentheim as there is a webpage about the former synagogue there
http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/neunkirchen_synagoge.htm.

The website for the Standesamt (registrar) in Bad Mergentheim is
http://www.bad-mergentheim.de/Standesamt.881.0.html

I would doubt that there would be registrations as early as that, but they
might have registrations of relatives.

The website for the Archive is
http://www.bad-mergentheim.de/Stadtarchiv.989.0.html#897.

I believe that the Jewish cemetery for the area is the Unterbalbach
cemetery:
http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/unterbalbach_friedhof.htm.

See http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/tracking_jewish_history.htm which is in
English. which mentions Neunkirchen.

There is an unpublished document:

Der jüdische Friedhof von Lauda-Königshofen-Unterbalbach.
Unveröffentlichte Grunddokumentation des Landesdenkmalamtes, 2003.
Bearbeiterinen: Situtunga Michal Antmann und Martina Strehlen.

which translates as:

The Jewish Cemetery of Lauda-Königshofen-Unterbalbach
Unpublished source document of the Land Memorials Office 2003
Authors: Situtunga Michal Antmann and Martina Strehlen

This is listed by the Central Archives for Research on the History
of the Jews in Germany ON at
http://www.uni-heidelberg.de/institute/sonst/aj/englisch.htm

Bad Mergentheim is in Franconia. I met recently the Director of the Jewish
Museum of Franconia, Daniella Eisenstein, in Fuerth when I was there.

Re: Oceanview Cemetery in NY ??? #general

Sam Schleman <Samara99@...>

Dear Joan;

Living in NYC, as you do, you really should join the Jewish Genealogy
Society of New York.

They maintain a web site which includes a listing and description of all NY
area cemeteries, including phone numbers, at http://www.jgsny.org/nycem.htm.
While this listing does not indicate the age of Oceanview, Baron Hirsch
opened in 1901 and United Hebrew in 1908, both being on Staten Island.

Sam

Samuel POMERANTZ, my gg uncle, was born in Kamenets-Litovsk in 1875 and died
on the Lower East side (Grand Street) in NYC in 1913. His death certificate
seems to indicate he was buried in Oceanview Cemetery (section R) - but it
is hard to read. I have located an address for an Oceanview Cemetery in
Staten Island but was surprised to find his family buried him on Staten
Island.

Could I have the name of the cemetery wrong? --- Is there another cemetery
with a similar name somewhere else? --- Would they have taken the body over
on a ferry? --- Is anyone familiar with this cemetery or with any burial
societies that buried people there? (The death certificate indicates the
undertaker was A. Livingston at 248 Grand Street.)

I have sent the Oceanview Cemetery in Staten Island a letter requesting
information but have not gotten any response. I am planning to visit the
cemetery but any information about it prior to my visit or any suggestions
for getting information >from them will be appreciated!

Defunct Temple in NYC #general

Pat Shaw <pat@...>

My grandparents, Ida FRIEDMAN and Alexander POLLACHEK were married in
June 1906 at Cong. Bnei Peizer, 127 E. 82nd Street, New York City.
Apparently this temple is now closed. Does anyone know if the
records would have been transferred to another temple? Or does this
temple operate under another name?
Thank you

Dear Genners

I am looking for information about my great grandmother's family (about her
parents, siblings, place of birth etc).

My great grandmother Taube SUFRIN was born 1865. She was married in
Tyczyn Poland with Samuel Josef Fenster (a widower) and gave birth, 1893, to
her only child, Natan SUFRIN, my grandfather.

from Pages of Testimony written by my grandfather for his mother I found
out her parents were: reb David HACOHEN and Chana SUFRIN.
I didn't find any document for the family in JRI-Poland.
One major puzzle is what was her father's surname? Another puzzle is who
were her siblings?

A clue that might help is that after her parents died, around 1880, Taube
lived in Munich with her elder sisters and brother (they were already
married). There she stayed until she moved to Tyczyn, around 1892 . As far
as I know at least one sister lived in Munich until 1939. Could be her
brother emigrated to US with his family, before WW2.

With the help of Dr. Heusler >from the Munich Archiv, whom I am most
grateful, I have got the possible names for her family in Munich :

1. Moses (Moritz) BLANK born 1872, married with Sara Pappenheimer. He lived
in Munich and emigrated to US before the WW2.
Names of his parents: Hersch BLANK and Antonia Taube SUFRIN >from Glogow,
Poland.

2. Sara SUFRIN- Moses's sister, born 1880, married with Gedalja RUSS.They
lived in Munich and had a daughter Ottilie Rus, born 1911. Otillie emigrated
on 1939 to Jugoslavia.
Sara, whose name was also Dora Sally (Dwora Sara) was murdered in Kaunas
1942.

3. Regina (Rebekka) SUFRIN, born 1865 in Rudnik, Poland. She was married
with Jakob SCHOENFELD. They lived in Munich.
Names of her parents: David and Anna (Chana?) HERZFELD.

Regina died on 1920. She had 6 children: Salomon (1891), Anna (1892), Josef
(1896), Bertha (1897), Moritz (1900) and Rosalie (1904). Salomon, Anna and
Josef were murdered by the Nazi. Moritz emigrated 1933. The fait of Bertha
and Rosalie is unknown.

Is any of these names familiar to you? Do they have descendants?
I will appreciate very much any help.
Please reply privately.

Do you recognize Janos Eugen WEISZ' family? #general

Susanna Vendel <svendel@...>

Please have a look at the photo on ViewMate
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=6731

I would like to trace the 2 children on this
photo >from 1953, Kenneth (5y) and Rhona (7y).
The father is Janos Eugen Weisz from
Ermihalyfalva (Valea lui Mihai), the mother is
Iren (?) daughter of a rabbi(?) from
Austria. The children's parents died very young,
not long time after the picture is taken, and the
children were raised by Iren's
sister (?) in New York.

Janos Eugen Weisz has probably changed first
names. I couldn't find him in any kind of list or
social security list. He was
according to the family, very unfortunate in
business so the family avoided him. We know that
he lived first in Los Angeles around
1946-1948 and moved later to New York. The
children were raised somewhere in NY.

Kenneth is said to had served in Vietnam. Did he
survived? No idea! The name is quite common to be
able to find information about him when I don't
have his date of birth and precise name of his parents.

Rhona married quite young but I couldn't find any
more information about her. She should be today ca.
60 years old.

Does anybody >from the 1920-30 generation, with
roots in Ermihalyfalva met the parents and know
something of the faith of the children?

Please contact me separately.

Need name 1910 census NY #general

Rochelle Gershenow

I am looking for the names of anyone who lived at 3820 3rd Ave., New York
City in the 1910 census. I found the appropriate census sheets for this
area. However, although I scrolled through 200+ sheets, I was unable to
find the specific address on 3rd Ave. This address was listed on a death
certificate for my ggrandmother. It stated that the 3rd Ave. address was
her residence before she was admitted to the hospital in which she died. I
believe she moved in with someone living at the 3rd Ave. address. She died
shortly after arriving in New York so her name would not be listed on the
census. Any assistance would be much appreciated.
