Reasons to legally marry in Galtzia in 1938/39
#general
Alberto Guido Chester
Dear Genners
I have noticed that a couple of relatives in their thirties legally married in the Galizia area of Poland around 1938 -1939. We all know people married, at least religiously, much younger at that time frame. Would there be any reason for marrying legally in that time ?. War was imminent and as far as I know these people were not thinking in emigration. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Alberto Guido Chester Buenos Aires, Argentina

New: Warsaw KehilaLink
#general
I am pleased to advise that I have taken on the important project of
creating and running the Warsaw KehilaLink. It is quite surprising that there has been no KehilaLink for Warsaw, once the largest Jewish city in Europe and the second largest in the world after New York. JewishGen KehilaLinks (formerly "ShtetLinks") is a project facilitating web pages commemorating the places where Jews have lived. Kehila [Hebrew] n. (pl. kehilot): is used to refer to a Jewish community, anywhere in the world. KehilaLinks are hosted by JewishGen, the world’s largest Jewish genealogical organisation. It has a user base of over 500,000 registered users worldwide. I invite you to send in your stories, memories, photos and family biographies. I manage 85 JewishGen KehilaLinks. For the list and links, visit: http://elirab.me/kehila Thanks and regards Eli Rabinowitz Perth, Australia elirab.me

Re: Which test to upload to Gedmatch

This is what I did with my Ancestry, FTDNA and 23aneMe results I uploaded:
Run the DNA File Diagnostic Utility at the bottom of the free utilities and you will see number of SNPs. Then go to EDIT or DELETE your DNA resources profiles at the bottom of Your DNA Resources. Select a kit at the right and then select EDIT where you can choose Public, Private or Research. I named mine as <MYNAME> (research A), <MYNAME> (research F) and <MYNAME> (primary 2) so I know which company - Ancestry, FTDNA and 23andMe... In 2010, my wife, Toba, and I along with our guide, Julius Muller from Prague, visited several towns in the Klatovy District, Bohemia, Czech. The following document: https://tinyurl.com/bohemiatrip2010th contains a guidebook prepared by Julius, photos >from the cemeteries in the district and more. Please feel free to share. My families in this district were Blochs and Ecksteins. My father's mother came >from these families. I am sharing now because of work I just engaged in with folks in some of these towns. I have just made modifications to several Geni projects in this district. I welcome comments on any of this, especially the gravestones. I am a retired journalist (WSJ/NYT/II mag) researching a possible
book on the persons responsible for causing Hungary to defy the Nazis in early July 1944 by ceasing deportations to Auschwitz of the Jewish community of Budapest. One of the links is the role played by Jaromir Kopecky, the Czec official in Switzerland representing his government in exile. I have copies of about 50 telegrams/notes to and from him during May/June, 1944 that came >from the archives of VadYashem and the goverrnments of Germany and Czechoslovaki. Most are in the Czech languages/some in German. Initially, i just need to have a translator share with me the date and subject of the communications for me to determine if one or more would be significant. If so, I would then ask for a translation. Ideally, it would be best to meet with the translator to quickly review each document for its relevance. I could also send scans of the docs and then talk by phone. As a retired ex journalist, I am on a limited budget and do not have a sponsor for this research. But i could pay $100 or so for the first phase of quick review and then $25 per doc (usually one page or 1 1/2 ) for a full translation of those that seem helpful. Happy to discuss further with anyone who wants to email me at fredbleak270@gmail.com Fred Bleakley -- helenepstein.com

Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths of Jewish Religion Communities from the years 1784–1949
#austria-czech
As many of you know, Badatelna has records of the Jewish communities in the
Czech lands >from 1784-1949. Perhaps even additional years. I believe Lenka Matusikova who was with the archives at the time had much to do with putting this toegether. Daniela Torsh was kind enough to point me to the following website to learn what this means I think Randy Schoenberg also had a lot to do with arranging Lenka's work on this. See http://www.nacr.cz/en/fondy-a-pomucky/digitalni-badatelna/matriky/ I share this as I did not know where to look and I suspect others will not either. Yizkor Book Project, June 2018
#austria-czech
Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>
Shalom,
In general, I begin my monthly Yizkor Book Project report with writing how impressed I am over the achievements we've managed to accomplish over the past month. This time, however, I leave it to you to decide for yourself about the scale of achievements we've made in both quantity and quality in June, and I believe you'll come to the same conclusion as myself. Once again, I have the wonderful news to convey to you that a further Yizkor book translation project is now entirely online. This time it is the Chorzele, Poland Yizkor book - the "Memorial Book of the Community of Chorzel" which was coordinated and financially supported by Susan Huntting. We are truly indebted to her for leading the project through to its successful completion. As far as new projects go, we have added in three pdf files, kindly provided by the Yizkor Book in Print Project of books they have published through their auspices. As with all our online translations and books, access to these are without charge but, of course, if you interested in purchasing one of these published books, please see details of how to obtain them in the YBIP Project page, listed at the end of this report. We have also been fortunate in June, in receiving access to another online book by Meir G. Gover - this time on the "Radzyner Rebbe dynasty 1840-2005". We do thank Meir for making this book available and I feel sure will be of interest to those of you with roots in Radzyn Podlaski, Poland. In this past month, a number of Translation Fund projects have been set up to obtain financial support of people with the same aim - achieving the English translation of the Yizkor book about the community they hold dear to their heart. As I so often note, the Yizkor books contain so much for us in details of the communities and the people in them - details which are unavailable in any other source. The translation funds that have recently been setup are for the books on Turobin, Poland and Svencionys, Lithuania and your support for any of these funds will greatly assist in achieving the goal of completely translating these books. I invite you to visit our JewishGen-erosity page, listed at the end of this report, where all our Translation Funds appear and welcome your donations, be they large or small, to see the translations of the books become a reality. And now for details of all the updates and additions that were carried out in the Yizkor Book Project in June. We have added in three new books: - God's Sabbatical Years (The Story of Alan Weiler) https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/SabbaticalYears/SabbaticalYears.html - My Journey to Freedom (Kybartai to Haifa) https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/JourneyToFreedom/JourneyToFreedom.html - The Maple Tree Behind the Barbed Wire (A Story of Survival >from the Czestochowa Ghetto) https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/MapleTree/MapleTree.html We have added in 7 new entries: - Birzai, Lithuania (Preserving Our Litvak Heritage - Volume I) https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lithuania4/lit4_026.html - Kaisiadorys, Lithuania (Preserving Our Litvak Heritage - Volume I) https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lithuania4/lit4_070.html - Lygumai, Lithuania (Preserving Our Litvak Heritage - Volume I) https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lithuania4/lit4_257.html - Stakliskes, Lithuania (Preserving Our Litvak Heritage - Volume I) https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lithuania4/lit4_479.html - Sudargas, Lithuania (Preserving Our Litvak Heritage - Volume I) https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lithuania4/lit4_492.html - Wolomin, Poland (Volomin;
