Nafteli #hungary

Bobby Jacobs <bobj2361@...>

Nafteli is the first name of several members of my family. I assume this
is a German name, but I'm not sure. Any idea what the American name for
this would be?

Szujov #hungary

I am looking for another place now: Szujov. A record for my wife's
great-grandmother gives her place of birth as Szujov but I can't find it
either; the date is 1872. My mother-in-law thought that she had come from
Slovakia when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Anyone know where
Szujov is and what it's called now? Thanks.

Re: FHL JEWISH RECORDS FOR HUNGARY #hungary

Nobody can really answer your question. The FHL filmed
whatever they were given. They are still filming in
Slovakia.

If you are looking for records for a place where there
should be some and they are not in the catalog, it
never hurts to ask.

There is a book:Magyar zsidó levéltári repertórium
by Dr. Haraszti György Budapest ("Directory of
archival holdings relating to the history of Jews in
Hungary")Budapest MTA Judaisztikai Kutatport,
copyright 1993 which lits all the records that exist
(or that he found) whether at the FHL or not. A copy
is in SLC at the FHL - no film too recent, available
probably elsewhere.

Regards

Robert

Genners,

Does anyone know if there are more Jewish records
for Hungarian towns that
have not yet been filmed? Is it worth it to contact
the county archives to
ask if these records exist?

Thanks.

ViewMate- Advice for Handwritten Translation Requests #general

Bernard Kouchel <koosh@...>

Volunteer translators have made the following request....

When requesting translations of handwritten items, the translator needs more that
just a few words to help his/her judgment to decipher script legibility and
writing style. Include five or ten lines of text to reveal the full message behind
those words.

Your compliance will result in translations with increased clarity.

Research in Vilna #general

I would like to thank all of you who sent me references and reserchers' e-mails.
One of the reserchers provided a list of different files in Vilna archives.
I wonder if some of you are interested to hire a researcher. Probably as a group
we can have better/reduced price for collective search.
Looking forward to hear >from you.

ViewMate - Birth Record, German or Polish #general

fransegall@...

I have posted 2 complete pages of a birth register for my grandmother's sister,
Feige LICHTMAN (listed as Feige BERGSTEIN). I would appreciate any help that I
can get regarding the translation of her birth information, especially the
occupations of her father, grandfather, and the witness, Abraham Lichtman.

Also, in column 9, there is a word in every record, right after the name which I
suppose either means "born in" or "living in" or "from". What is that word?

ViewMate: Russian, Polish and German Gothic Translations #general

HJB <hjb@...>

Hello JGenners,

I'm hoping for translations of these birth records which are posted on Viewmate:

Russian - Faiga SADOWSKA >from Belchatow VM6688
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=6688

Russian - Mordka Sadowski >from Belchatow VM6689
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=6689

Polish - Dine HABER pt. 1 & pt. 2 VM 6690 & 6691 (2nd row down)
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=6690
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=6691

I believe the last one is German Gothic Script. The quality is very poor but I'd
truly appreciate it if anyone can pull out the names for whom this could be a
record as I can't seem to ID which ancestor's record this is. VM6692

Please reply directly to me. Thanks to all who help with translations. Your

MICHALEK / SCHALLOM search #general

Pam <pam_staley@...>

I'm researching both sides of my ancestry - my maternal side: gggrandfather, Josef
MICHALEK m to Cornelia Ellen (CANNAUGHT) DILLON; Josef's parents Anton(Anthony)
Michalek and Magdalen SCHRAMM - the translated passport we have on Josef was
issued in 1880 and says the following:

Passport for: Josef Michalek
Employment: Taglohn (don't know the English expression; employment >from day
to day)
Resident to: Deutsch-Jaßnick
Outskrirts: Neutischin
Region: Mähren

Year of birth: 1864
Build: klein (small)
Face: länglich (oval)
Occular: grau (grey)
Mouth and nose: zegert (old expression for slim)
Part. Charact. keine (none)

Passp. for travelleing to Amerika
Validity: zwei Jahre (two years)

I have tried researching the areas outlined and would like to see if we can match
up where he might have lived with countryman still living there. Any help would be
appreciated.

On my father's side, my ggg grandmother's name was Mary B. SCHALLOM(1881-1953) and
her father was Charles Schallom, Sr. (1845) >from Bohemia - we have no other info
other than that -

Of course, both names sound very Jewish to me and I would like to find out more -
any help would be appreciated.
thank you
