Reychman's "Szkice Genealogiczne" #warsaw #poland

Peter Lebensold

I have just come into possession of a copy of the 1985
reprint of Kazimierz Reychman's "Szkice Genealogiczne"
["Genealogical Sketches"] that was first published, in
Warsaw, in 1936.

My Polish is nonexistent, but the book seems to consist of
short (2-4 page) sections, listing names and dates (back
to as early as, in some cases, the mid-18th century) for
each of a few dozen Warsaw families. Yale Reisner - at
the Lauder Foundation in Warsaw - tells me that while
Reychamn's data "is not totally flawless, in general, it
is highly reliable, as we have had contact with many of
the families included and they have confirmed many
details." For anyone interested, I would be pleased to
scan and email the relevant pages.

The families listed are:

Isidor OHRINGER #general

מיכל גוטמכר

After my uncle Hermann OHRINGER >from Amsterdam passed away some years ago,
I helped my cousin, his daughter, through the letters and documents he
left.
To my astonishment I found an affidavit which an american cousin,
Isidor OHRINGER, 59 years old, >from Riverside Drive XXX, New York City, sent
to him for me and my sister, in 1948 ( we were minors).
We never intended to use this as our wish was to come to Israel and we were
not in touch .
But now I would like very much to find this cousin and his (our) family.
I would like to get advise how to go about this.

I constantly update my programs and backup my data. I figure that in fewer
than five years everything will be stored on a chip. I will then convert to
that medium. I also make hard copies of EVERYTHING!!

We use computers to store the stories and images of our family's

Re: Publishing Genealogies #general

Hilary Henkin <hilary@...>

I'd like to offer a differing opinion about this topic, in total
agreement with Stan Goodman.

I've read the several postings offering huge cautions against listing
family trees on the internet. I don't see of what use a name is to a
spammer without an accompanied email address. Harvesters don't
gather names, only email addresses. And if a "bad guy" even were to
find a family tree, they'd have no way to locate any of the
individuals. Their modus operandi is to send out thousands/millions
of emails to reel in suckers (that's why they call it "phishing"),
and go >from there, rather then to spend hours digging out family
trees, then more hours trying to locate the listed individuals.

If I list someone as "daughter, living", how can this lead to
identity theft? Even if I list "Ann, still living", how can this
lead to identity theft???? And how many cases of identity theft have
you heard of which began with info >from a genealogy website????

I think we're being 'way over-worried in too many ways today.

I maybe can understand the caution about publishing "mother's maiden
name", since U.S banks etc. had used that as a security
device. However, in the past couple of years, institutions have
stopped using that clue, so even that's no longer a concern.

My family tree has been on the web for about six years now. I've
found far more cousins, than otherwise. Two cousins have asked me to
remove their personal info, which I of course did. (their listings
now say, "daughter, living" husband, living", etc.)

Oh, yes, one more thing. If YOU get a message >from someone claiming
to be a relative, and all they know is what's on your website, then
YOU had better be careful!

Re: Unmarked grave #general

Sally Bruckheimer <sallybru@...>

Have you asked the cemetery where he is buried? Have you asked if he is
buried where you think he is buried? They usually have records of who is
where, but sometimes they are not great

My gr grandfather is in a cemetery (according to his death certificate) kept
by a synagogue which is still in business. A woman I know tried to
straighten out their records. They have a dozen plots with someone in them,
but they don't know who; they have another dozen plots that might have
someone in them; they have a bunch of people who are supposedly somewhere,
but they don't know where. And my gr grandfather.

But usually they know who is where.

New Resource Coordinator! #romania

Rosanne Leeson <rdleeson@...>

Dear fellow ROM-SIGgers,

We are delighted to be able to announce that Robert Wascou has accepted
the postion as the Resource Coordinator for the ROM-SIG! This is
position that is requested for all of the SIGs, who are asked to have
one person who will coordinate all of the research projects and Project
Coordinators, of that SIG. This will centralize all of these projects
for a SIG, and make it simpler for the JewishGen teams, who can then
communicate with/through only one person.

Bob has done, and will continue to do a superlative job coordinating the
Kishinev database project for us. He is very experienced, capable and
an exceptional manager! We are very fortunate that he has agreed to
undertake this new position - and very, very grateful!

Thank you, Bob!

Jews in Hungary #galicia

Susan Fifer <suef@...>

I have a copy of a map of the town of Mako in the south of Hungary
dating >from 1824. All the house/land plots are numbered and on the
reverse is a list of all the householders. There are three groups of
Jewish names (confirmed by the fact that they have the letters Zs
after their name for Zsido.) Jews were authorised to settle in the
town in 1740 and a hevra kaddisha was founded in 1748. The first
synagogue was built in 1814. The Jews were under the 'protection' of
the Bishop (and no doubt paid taxes for this privilege.)

I am not sure of the question that started this thread and I don't
know where these Jews came >from originally but most of them seem to
have German names (or Hungarianised alternatives such as Kiss for
Klein) which would seem to suggest Ashkenazi rather than Sephardi
origins. I have a copy of the pamphlet by the last 'neolog' rabbi and
historian of the town, Dr KECSKEMETI Armin on the history of the Jews
of Mako. It is in Hungarian but the dates in the earlier part of the
pamphlet seem to confirm the arrival date of 1740.
