Have you tried Yechiel. There are lots of references to this name including
rabbis so it doesn't seem to be a version of another name.

The name Yekhiyel is a name in its own right. According to Russian Jewish

Dear Belarus searchers,
Does anyone have information re D. Barkin and Levin Ladies Coats, in
Manhattan 1930's? This Barkin was related to my grandmother Mame Barkin
(born in Lepel, daughter of Beines Barkin).
The Internation Fashion Institute has been unable to assist me. A Dickman,
(2nd cousin) was given employment with Barkin&Levin during the depression as
he was related to Barkin family.
After searching for several years any leads/help would be appreciated.
Thank you,

Dear Stan et al,

Yechiel is a name unto itself according to Diamant's 1994 "The NEW Jewish Baby
Book" (sic). It means 'May God Live' - an oddity if you think about it. She
also says it was the name of King David's chief court musician.

In our [Ukrainian] family, Yekhiel Melech became Julius Michael.

Hope this is of some help.

Yours,
Michelle Frager NY area

I think there should be a repository for Jewish one-name studies. Anyone

someone articulate the benefits?

Hi Denise,

I think that the photo was taken in Germany, sometime between the mid 1920's
and 30's.

The reasoning I am using is the studs on the dress, the glasses, and the
hairstyle.

The necklace with the large wooden(?) items suggest black forest.

Is there any printing on the back? Do you have the rest of the photo?

Best regards

I have posted a photo of my grandmother, Frieda WEIDENFELD, on Viewmate,
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html, VM6610. I know it was
taken in Europe, but do not know the year. Would someone please take a
look at it, and tell me if they can discern anything about her, the decade
the photo was taken, by the clothes she is wearing, etc.?

Thanks very much,

It's also not necessary to have a Hebrew keyboard. You do need to
have Hebrew enabled on your computer, but Bezeq provides a virtual
Hebrew keyboard for entering the name, etc., to search. You click on
the area corresponding to the letter you want, and that letter is
entered in the selected field. A little clunky, but it works.

Hi fellow siggers,
Gabi Svatos and I will be in Bratislava August 21-26, Prague? dates
uncertain, and I will be in Vienna Monday Aug 29 until Sept 2 departure. I start
out this Saturday for Amsterdam then to Budapest Aug. 8 to 14 , where I will
eventually meet up with H-Sigger Vivian Kahn , we go to Miskolc Aug. 15 , on
Aug. 16 to 20 I'm off to Kosice and then to meet Gabi in Bratislava on Aug 21.

If you would like to meet with us, please contact me off list. We would
enjoy meeting fellow Jewish genners along the way. I'll be checking,[ or should
I say czeching?] my email at cyber cafes along the way. In our preparations
it appears that Gabi and I may have a family connection via an 1860s marriage,
you can be sure we are looking into that on our trip!
