KOLUMBUS Family Info. #general

Jack Kolumbus <jackkol@...>

I was raised in a Christian family. However, in researching the KOLUMBUS
family name, the only records that I have found are of Jewish families from
Russia or Lithuania. Since Kolumbus is a unique last name, I find it very
reasonable to assume that my family has Jewish roots. My grandfather came
from Stara Bysrica in Slovakia. If anyone has "any" knowledge of families
with the last name of Kolumbus (or variations in the spelling), please
contact me. I am trying to leave a family history for my grandchildren.

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I believe my SHULMAN relatives should be listed on the 1911 Canadian census
now online as living in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Is there a way to find
them without trolling through hundreds of pdf files? They arrived in 1910.

Legislation enacted only a few weeks ago -S-18 --released the 1911 census
and the censuses that follow through 2001 (each census will be released 92
years after it was taken).

A great accomplishment in a few weeks, so kudos to Ian E. Wilson, Librarian
and Archivist of Canada, and the staff at Library and Archives Canada for
their hard work in putting these valuable records online sooner than was
expected.

For those with Canadian ancestry, enjoy the census!!
What was the previous situation and what was the argument for the change?

With the help of the JGS of Montreal, I recently located the grave of my
great grandmother Rosie (FREINDLICH) SAMLAN, who died March 21, 1915 and in
buried in Back River Cemetery there. It is possible that she was >from Romania.

She left one son, Abraham (my grandfather), born in February 1895. He
claimed to be born in Montreal, although we have no birth record to confirm that.

I am trying to locate any information about Rosie's life, including and
especially Canadian/Quebec immigration information. I'm also trying to locate any
Romanian documents or records that might shed some light on the life of her
husband, Moses, about whom we know only that he was born in Romania,
supposedly died in a war -- family legend has it as the Spanish-American War. We have
no burial information.

Any information, leads or ideas appreciated.

The truth is that being Jewish is both a religious and ethnic classification
depending on context. Nationality is not really a good description as the Jews
have since the First Exile in Babylon always had a Diaspora. The peculiar Jewish
situation stems >from the time when every people had its own religion. There were
even more local deities too. When someone moved to a new place he adopted the
faith of the place. So when NonJews moved to Ancient Israel they became Jewish.
The difference was Judaism rejected other gods and so could survive in Exile. We
started the concept of absolute religion/ethics as opposed to pleasing local
deities with differing demands. If it were as simple as Religion or Ethnicity
we would not be having anything to discuss. No one calls the at least global
Catholic community an ethnic group.

Apropos to this subject I'd like to ask if anyone has knowledge of a Jewish
star with a cross inside? I found this engraved on a tombstone in Wales.
The graveyard was very, very old, overgrown with nettles and other weeds.

I was struck dumb by this sight. If I remember right the name on the stone
wasn't typically Jewish but that might not mean anything.

Many years later I saw the same symbol, a sixpointed star with a cross in
it, painted on the side of a hippy Volkswagon bus.
There is a large Mogen David stained window on a large church (Santa
Crocce) in Florence. The best explanation is that at the time the
church was designed "looks" were more important than being PC and the
architect went for what looked good (You can see a picture on the
cover of Rick Steve's book Italy 2005)
