With typing in the surname of your relative, you should get some help. Since
the late 19th C. was very close to the time of immigration to U.S. there is
no reason to believe that many who were >from nations other than England or
France would be referred to as Romanians. People today still refer to others
by their ethnic descendancy. And Jews were in this country since the 17th
C. why wouldn't they be soldiers?

Texas was one of the largest theaters of the Spanish American War. Have I
checked out Sam Houston's descendancy? No? But he could have been a
lantsman!? Good luck.

given name Shmerko #belarus

Lancy

Shmerko would indeed be the local diminutive of Shmerl which in turn is the
diminutive of either of the Hebrew names Shmariah or Shmariyahu.

Can anyone tell me what the likely English-language version of the name
Shmerko (as found in Belarus) would be?

Thanks in advance.

Gentlemen,
Looking for military records of my father >from the Austrian army >from WWI.

I understand that the records of all Austrian military >from the area that
became Poland after 1918 were sent to the Polish government for use in
staffing their military. Anyone have any luck in obtaining these records
or do you know which archive they may be in?

He was >from the Galician area. The town is Biezdziadka which is 3 to 4 miles
from Kolaczyce. It is 14 miles west of Krosno, near Jaslo, located at 4948 2131.
Also, anyone know which archive marriage licenses for this area may be filed?

Dear Siggers,
The Senior Account Clerk of Cemeteries herself tried out her digital camera
and took very acceptable photos of my family, so I'm withdrawing the request.

Lodz Ghetto Photos in Prague #austria-czech

meretz

An exhibition of Lodz ghetto photos taken by Henryk Ross, the official Lodz
Ghetto photographer, was recently shown at the Prague Langhans gallery.
Henryk Ross took 6,000 photos during his stay in the ghetto. Prior to the
ghetto's liquidation, he succeeded to bury the negatives. Henryk Ross
survived and unearthed the negatives >from the ghetto area after the war.
The exhibition opened in Prague to commemorate the 5,000 Czech Jews sent
from Prague to the Lodz Ghetto in Poland during the Second World War. Only
227 Czech Jews survived the experience and returned to Bohemia. Many Jews
were deported to Lodz >from Vienna as well.
Please see http://www.radio.cz/en/article/62330
The Prague exhibition has already been closed on February 19, 2005, but it
was planned to travel to Amsterdam, Milan and Lodz.
Timothy Prus, the curator for the Archive of Modern Conflict in London,
which now holds the Ross photo collection, has edited a book on Ross' work,
called Lodz Ghetto Album. The photos shown in the exhibition were a
selection >from this Album.
