The SORKIN Family #belarus

Michael Sorkin <msorkin@...>

have traced my Great- Grandfather Joseph Sorkin his wife Esther, sons Aaron
(my Grandfather Harry) Chiam (Hymie),Alec and daughters Leikei (Lily) and
Bella all arriving at Ellis in Sept 1906 they where all refused entry Esther
7 months pregnant and my Grandfather had been hospitalised on the boat
Smolensk.according to the ships manifest they where due to stay with a
family called BELITZKY in New York.
I have a feeling this could have been my Great Grandmothers maiden name but
I have no records to show this I am told she was >from Rechitsa and my
G-Grandfather was >from Homel (Gomel) are there any marriage records >from
these areas ??? that would confirm anything about my family prior to 1906 I
presume they where married and that would be about 1895 as my Grandfather
was 10 when they arrived at Ellis Island.
Somehow they finished up in the UK in October 1906.Can anybody help please.
please reply to msorkin@hotmail if that's easier.

Re: NYC Police Records #general

Sally Bruckheimer <sallybru@...>

How old is old? My 2nd gr grandfather was in the NYC police dept
(a translator) about 1860 and died in 1864. I once went to 1 Police
Plaza to see if there were any records of him - death benefit, anything.

The NYC Police Department was reorganized well after that, and I was
advised to write to the governor as the next 'version' were state police
before there were state police. The present NYC Police Department
was much younger, but I don't know the specifics.

There are, however, coroner's records, >from at least as far back as
1900, in the Municipal Archives, I believe.

"I was wondering whether the NYC Police Department would have old
records and/or archives for our view in cases such as a family member
having a tragic death, where the cause of death was Undetermined on
the death certificate."

Derivation of surname STEIBER #general

Steve Orlen

Dear Cousins,

Does anyone know the derivation of the surname STEIBER? The owners of that
name lived in Vienna for at least three generations, beginning in the late
19th century, but a member of that family thinks the family came originally
from Moldava.

Finding someone from 1930s/1940s New York City: Lillian FLORMAN KATZ #general

A. E. Jordan

I need help finding/figuring our how to find Lillian FLORMAN KATZ who
lived in the New York - New Jersey area in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

Here's what I know: she was a maid of honor at a family wedding that
took place in New York City (Manhattan) in August 1920 and she is
listed as Miss Lillian Florman. In my great grandfather's (Jacob
JOSEPH) will in 1941 he leaves money to his niece Lillian KATZ. So if
all the dots connect, Lillian FLORMAN's mother's maiden name was JOSEPH,
but I do not know the mother's first name. Some where after 1920
Lillian FLORMAN married a man named KATZ. The mother would had been a
sister to Jacob and Israel JOSEPH.

Assuming (which I know is a bad starting place) that Lillian was a
young woman at the time of the 1920 wedding I have been looking
in the US Census for a Lillian, Lillie, Lilly, (etc) >from 1920
named FLORMAN. I can not find one who fits the descriptions.
Several people helped pull people out of the Census >from 1900, 1910 and
1920 but none of the people in the census fit.

I gave up on the Census because I can not find the person. I tried
going to the court and looking at the papers in my great grandfather's
estate but there was nothing there about Lillian despite the fact she
was left money. No papers with her signing for the money, etc. The will
itself >from 1941 gives no further information nor a husband's name to
try and pin it down at all.

I am at a deadend right now and need someone to help repoint me or
better yet for someone to reply and say they know this woman. Anyone
have any ideas?

Thanks.
