Re: Jews deported to Siberian Gulags #belarus

I was sleeping on the job. Gary Mokotoff reminded me about something he
wrote about the Siberian Gulags in May and with his permission I am going to
share what he wrote in "Nu, What's New?"
<http://www.avotaynu.com/nuwhatsnew.htm>:

*******************
There is now an online database at http://www.memo.ru of some 1.5 million
people, about 20,000 identified as Jewish, who were interned and died in
Soviet gulags form 1935-1955. Apparently it also includes persons executed
in Moscow. There are introductions at the site in Russian, German and
English, but currently the search engine and resulting information is only
in Russian.

Included for each person is last name, first name, patronymic, year of
birth, place of birth, nationality (Jewish is a nationality), education,
party membership, profession and place of work, place of residence, date of
arrest, arrest charge, date of decision, decision agency, law under which
convicted, sentence, date of execution, place of execution, date of
exoneration, exonerating agency, basis of exoneration and source of
information.

For those who do not have Russian keyboards, the Stephen P. Morse site
provides character for character transliteration of Roman alphabet letters
into Cyrillic. The Morse site is at http://www.stevemorse.org.

Thanks to Abe for his report on what he found.

If anyone is successful in finding data to help there own family research, I
hope you will share your good fortune with the Belarus SIG Discussion Group.

Difficult Translation Requested #lithuania

Steve Franklin <cryptozoomorphic@...>

I would appreciate it if someone with a thorough knowledge of Hebrew
would takea crack at translating the tombstone inscription for Barnett
(Boruch) Cooper (Kuper) I have posted here:
http://www.lordbalto.com/images/Barnett.jpg.

My apologies for the quality of the photo, but the tombstone was leaning
andwater damaged on the Hebrew side and the lighting was so bad I had to
photograph it in 3 pieces and then reconstruct it. I can make out most of
the letters, so it shouldn't be impossible. It was taken at Har Jehuda
outside Philadelphia.

Even a partial reading would be appreciated.

Seeking KOCH from Gemuenden #germany

Carlota Widman Dublon <cwidman@...>

I am trying to find information about my maternal gggrandmother´s
Magdalena KOCH.

She was married to Lazarus FERNICH >from Klotten. April 1878.

The only clues I have are the town where she was born and her father´s
hebrew name (taken >from her grave):

Edil tochter (daughter) of Naftali Hakohen (gattin des -the wife of -
Eliezer ha Levi). Born Gemünden on April 1802

(but...... I found four different Gemuenden, Gemuenden Hunsrueck, Gemuenden
am Main, Gemuenden Wohra and Gemuenden Felda).

I guess that probably the right ones should be Gemuenden Hunsrueck or
Gemuenden am Main.

I am aware that it is not an easy task. First, to find exactly in which of
all these towns she born.
Later, to know the year in which Gemuenden´s Jws adopted their Grman
surnames, then to find out where were burried the people living there, etc. etc.

I would appreciate very much your help regarding this matter. All
suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

SABSCOITZ #lithuania

Rabbi Ben-Zion Saydman <ravbenzi@...>

Shalom:

I just received a map of the Beth Hamedrash Hagodol section of Machpelah
cemetery in New York which shows all burials up to 1957. Bordering my
MELTSNER family graves, the map records the graves of Fayga SABSCOITZ
(1/7/1917) and Louis SABSCOITZ (5/26/1922). Family legend holds that
the 5 known MELTSNER boys had a sister, Fayga. Other than her first
name, nothing else has been passed down. Logic dictates that Fayga
SABSCOITZ is quite possibly the sister, which is very exciting!

Unfortunately, my searches for this surname or similar variations came up
blank. Has anyone seen this surname before? If it is recorded incorrectly
on the map, what would be your best guess for the true surname?

Is anyone planning a visit to Machpelah who wouldn't mind checking the
information on Fayga and Louis' matzevahs? They are buried in the Beth
Hamedrash Hagodol section, Row B, graves 11 and 12. If anyone with
family connections to Beth Hamedrash Hagodol would like me to check the
Machpelah map for relatives, please contact me privately.

I am looking forward to seeing you all in Las Vegas.

FW: translation help #poland

TE <tome1111@...>

Below is a link to an 1882 marriage record, for a couple in the Tarnogrod
area. I would really like some translation help and would like to learn
more about the groom, his age, occupation, where he was born and resided,
his mother's first name (last word on line 16), etc..

If time permits, I'd also like to learn more about the bride, especially her
parent's names and mother's maiden name, and the town she was from.

Thank you,
