Cohanim and their rightful name. #general

Nigel Wilson <wilsonettes@...>

Before uprooting the whole family >from Poland to live in England in the late
1890s my husband's grandather's elder brother took the journey to London to
'spy out the land'.

Having declared it a suitable place to live he told the rest of the family
to pack their bags and get on the next ship - with one proviso - when they
arrive at the docks they were to say their name was Cohen not their true
name of Greenspun, according to the elder brother doing so would prevent
anyone >from Poland 'finding them' for whatever reason, as there were so many
Cohen families in London.

The male members of the family continue to this day to practice as Cohanim -
but are they really?

This remains a continual mystery.

I suppose they could take a DNA test but can you imagine the ramifications
if it were negative!

Chaim Freedman's book on the descendants of the Gaon of Vilna #general

ben-ari <yrcdi@...>

Does anyone living in the Jerusalem area have Chaim Freedman's book
"Eliyahu's Roots"?

If so I would appreciate if could skim through it.

I know its at the National Library (its hard for me to get there during
visiting hours.

Thank you,

Yoni Ben-Ari, Efrat

Which Ostrah did my ancestor come from #general

ben-ari <yrcdi@...>

In my family's handwritten yichus page it is written that my
ggggrandfather, Israel ROSENBAUM lived in Ostrah and was a talmid (follower)
of Reb' Yehoshua Heschel of Apta.

The above Israel was a son (or son-in-law) of a Reb' Yosef (Rav ?) of
Breznica who was a son (probably son-in-law) of Shmuel , Rav of Kremenetz
and a descendant of both the Maharal (through Reb Naftali KATZ-Smichas
Chachomim) and the Maharshal (through the KLAUSNER family).

My questions:

Can anyone suggest , >from the above information which Ostrah he was >from as
I've seen several Ostrah's refered to.

Do the above names fit into any other member of this group. I've been in
touch with the group reseaching the KLAUSNERs but their information on my
branch (children of the above Shmuel) comes >from me and I would appreciate
other corraborating sources.

Thank you and Shabbat Shalom

Kesher Israel Synagogue, 4th & Lombard Sts., Philadelphia - Zagare #general

Harry D. Boonin <hdboonin@...>

A number of years ago I found a hand-written address book of about 200 names
of the members of a synagogue in Philadelphia, Congregation Kesher Israel.
It was (and still is) located at 4th & Lombard Streets. The phone book is
from the 1920s and 1930s. The synagogue was founded in 1894 by Jews from
Eastern Europe. Founders of the synagogue were mostly >from Zagare, but from
other places also (places I cannot identify). The phone book does not state
where a person came from.
I posted this information on jewishgen three years ago, and received 9
responses. Generally, I was not able to provide much helpful information to
those who corresponded with me, and they were not able to help me learn much
about the membership of the shul during those years. But we all tried.
Since three years have passed, I thought I would try again. I would be
happy to answer any inquirers about the membership. I have learned much
more about the membership in the intervening three years, but I guess it is
still looking for a needle in a haystack. For the majority of the members,
I still know only the names and addresses that are in the book. For others,
I have a bit more information. For a few members, I have learned a lot.

R' Yakov EMDEN / Chacham Zvi genealogy #rabbinic

Dubin, David M. MD

A tradition in part of our family is that Rabbi Yakov EMDEN's
daughter married Rabbi Binyamin EISENSTADT, my 7ggf. Does anyone
know of a full-blown ancestor tree of his or his father (the Chacham
Zvi)? I have assembled a lot of info on his ancestors >from the Atlas
Etz Chaim and family lore, but I may be leaving a lot out.

Thank you.
