MAHLER and MOCKIN born Pieszczaniki, Poland (near Bialystok)
#general
Mark Halpern
My grandmother, Chana GERSZOWICZ, was born in Pieszczaniki (coordinates
5308, 2334; 17 miles east of Bialystok) in 1884. Apparently her family was living there at the time due to her father managing or working at a textile plant near this town. I have been searching for information about this town and its Jewish residents for nearly 10 years and have not found anything until now. Recently, I was using the Yad Vashem Central Database of Shoah Victim's Names and, on a whim, searched for "Location = Pieszczaniki." Unbelievably, two Shoah Victim names appeared. If anyone knows of either of these people or any ideas for further research, please contact me privately. 1. Dawid Berisch MAHLER, born 28 December 1886 in Pieszczaniki. Died 03 September 1943 in Auschwitz. Source of data was "In Memoriam - Nedelandse Oorlogsgravenstichting (Dutch War Victims Authority) 2. Malka MOCKIN/MOTZKIN, born 1897 in Pieszczaniki, wife of Avraham, living in Michalowo before the War. Died in Bialystok in 1942. Source of data was Page of Testimony submitted by AREZ, sister-in-law on 26 March 1957. Thanks for your help, Mark Halpern

Los Angeles Jewish newspaper, 1970-1980's
#general
Monica Talmor
I have located death notices for a relative and his wife in the LA Times
(1978 and 1982), but the only information given was the name of the mortuary. I have contacted them by e-mail and I'm assuming that they will be able to tell the the exact location of the graves, but probably not a contact name. (I know they would probably forward a letter). What Jewish newspaper in LA might have had an actual obituary? I am looking for the children of this family, obviously, if there are any. Monica Talmor Hamden, CT

Re: Slovakian Jewry - emigration patterns?

Further to Peter's reply with regard to Zavod and Kol...
My NADWORNY name is beyond uncommon among Jews. My family came >from Odessa. All the non-Jews with the name come >from Poland or northern Ukraine as do the very few other Jewish families with the name (it's an occupational title meaning someone who worked on or managed an estate). I have always reasoned that the family started off in Poland and emigrated to Odessa. But then again as Jews commonly were hired to manage Polish nobles' estates my family could be independent of others Jewish families with the name. I think you have to follow all possibilities. The name also refers to "court" like court chancellor in Russia. But often online presence of the name is on Polish sites discussing fantasy sci-fi books! And family mythology (stories everyone insists are true but no one can prove)can send you off on wild goose chases. My relatives didn't know about non-Jewish NADWORNYs back in the day--and somehow the story got to circulating in my family that my gf had been a philanderer and had children with a Catholic woman but left her and so there was a Catholic branch of the family!! Not true but we all believed it (I actually met a member of that Catholic family who had converted to Judaism! Life is interesting). Regards, Anita Citron Hicksville, NY

HOROWITZ bakers
#general
mpcamitta@...
Dear genners,
I am wondering if any of you can help with this question. Of my great uncle Leibe BASSEIN, it was said in an obituary that he was born into a family of bakers. His father, Betsalal, also a cantor in Minsk, worked in a relative's bakery and was known in Minsk for his excellent matzoh. In the U.S., Betsalel also worked in a relation's bakery. I am wondering if that bakery might have been a HOROWITZ bakery in Minsk and in the U.S., as in HOROWITZ-MARGARETEN. Sincerely, Miriam Camitta Wynnewood, PA
