Seeking AQUENIN/BURDO in France

A S Goldberg
Anna AQUENIN (nee BURDO) was living in Pontoise (France) in May 1991 when
she submitted Holocaust Victim testimonies to Yad Vashem. I would very much like to contact her or her immediate family - I have no idea if she is still alive. A French White Pages search for Aquenin in Pontoise produces a blank. Can anyone, please, help me? Please respond direct to me at alancomm@netmedia.net.il. Thank you Abraham Goldberg Jerusalem

Alan... A Google search on Bukovina (Bukowina) will tell you more than you
ever wanted to know about this part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. As regards Artur Kolnik, the painter and jiddishist, he was born April 06, 1890 in Stanislawow, Galicia, lived in Czernowitz, Bukovina between 1918 and 1931, and died in Paris, France in 1972, See the Czernowitz-L website at http://members.shaw.ca/czernowitz/ that's where the above information came from. Best, Jerome Schatten - webperson for Czernowitz-L Vancouver, Canada "AK" <alan.kolnik@add-an-n-before-the-dot-verizo.net> wrote in message I have been researching Bukovina and am a bit confused - was it/is it a general area, like a district, or were there several villages and shtetls as per Mapquest called Bukovina - or both? Which, if any, were inhabited by Jews, specifically the painter Artur Kolnik? Rgds Alan Kolnik Remove add-an-n-before-the-dot- and add an "n" after "verizo" to the address below:

Yom ha Shoah and VE Day Concerts in the UK - May 2005
#austria-czech
Celia Male <celiamale@...>
Sadly we have few, if any, SIG members in the {UK}
Midlands. Nevertheless, I am sure we all wish our member Jacqueline Bowen Cole every success with her two concerts this week entitled "Homage to Szymon Laks": Beth Shalom Holocaust Memorial Centre in Nottingham at 7.15pm on Thursday 5 May, 2005 Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire in association with Birmingham City Council and Representative Council of Birmingham and Midland Jewry, Sunday 8 May 2005 at 7.30pm Jewish ex-servicemen in Birmingham West Midlands will benefit >from the concerts. For the full programme, please see "Events" in: http://www.viktorullmannfoundation.org.uk/ Jacqueline is a tireless exponent of the music of composers who suffered in the holocaust, especially Viktor Ullmann. She founded the Viktor Ullmann Foundation UK in 2002. Its purpose is to honour, celebrate and remember the life, courage and genius of the composer and pupil of Arnold Schoenberg, and his fellow artists and musicians in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) ghetto. This will be achieved through concerts, festivals, cabaret, lectures, Holocaust education and film. Celia Male [UK]

The Familianten law; one more thing
#austria-czech
Florence & Henry Wellisch <kelwel@...>
In the Gold book on Moravia there is also a very interesting and informative
article on Moravian Jewry by Dr. Theodor Haas, entitled Statistical Observation on the Jewish Population of Moravia in the Past and Present. In this article Dr. Haas discusses also the introduction of the family law by Emperor Karl VI, and states the following: Thus, according to a court rescript of Emperor Karl VI, dated July 31, 1725, the admission of Jews in places were they were not resident was punishable by a fine of 1000 Ducats, and it established the highest number [Hoechstzahl] of "systematised" [ "systematisierten"] families at 5106. With a court decree dated Sept. 25, 1726 and made known on Oct. 24, 1726 the marrying [Verehelichung] of Jews was only permitted, insofar that only the eldest son after the death of the father could enter into a valid marriage and in this way after the death of his father received his "family site" ["Familienstelle"]. Frankly I did not know that the eldest son in the family could get married only after the death of his father and I was quite shocked to read this. I assume the Jews of the day found ways to get around this. Henry Wellisch Toronto

VM6004/5/6:Translations from German or Yiddish
#austria-czech
Stephanie Weiner <laguna@...>
Dear Genners,
I hope you will be kind enough to help with a translation >from 2 postcards sent to Vienna in 1916. I'm not sure whether the language is German or Yiddish. The back of one of the postcards may be neither of those languages. http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/VM6004 is the back of a postcard sent in 1916 >from Oscar Singer in Gleichenberg to Clara Singer in Vienna. http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/VM6005 is the front of that postcard. There is writing across the top that I hope is sufficiently legible for translation. The photo is of Oscar's two daughters, Helena and Mathilda. http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/VM6006 is the back of a second poscard sent by Lusia Singer in Gleichenberg to Clara Singer in Vienna. Is anyone familiar enough with Vienna to know where Wehlistrasse 220/12 would be located? Does anyone know of or recognize any of these folks? I believe they were summering in Gleichenberg, but lived in Drogobych. Thank you all in advance for your generous assistance. Stephanie Weiner San Diego, CA
