Michael SANDMAN, Long Island, NY > Middletown, NY Asylum
#general
Bonnie Birns
Dear Genners,
Michael SANDMAN, born in Prussia around 1820, came to the United States about 1850. He had a clothing store in Glen Cove, Long Island, NY. (Town of Oyster Bay, first in Queens County, then in Nassau County) Abstracted >from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle: 10/14/1890 p.1 M. Sandman, having been pronounced insane, will be taken to the state hospital at Middletown. 12/21/1890 p.14 Michael Sandman, Glen Cove, died in the asylum at Middleton, October last leaving estate valued at $10,000. First wife had 3 children Morris, Henry, Nancy Sandman. Second wife had 5 children, all living. Left all real estate to widow, children from first marriage contesting. My questions are: 1) Where would Michael SANDMAN likely be buried? Would he be left at the asylum in Middletown, or would a wealthy man be brought home to be buried on Long Island? 2) Should there be court documents regarding the contested will somewhere on Long Island? What would be the most likely location to find them? Thank you for your help. Bonnie Birns Jericho, Long Island, NY researching: BECHMANN, BIRN, BIRNS, EICHBERG, HOECHSTER, MAYER, THORMAN, TUCHLER, TUCKLER - Bavaria, Ger; BARER, BERNSTEIN, BURNSTON, GELLER, WACHS - Podkamen, Ukr; ARONOWSKY, TANDETNIK, TANDEJTNIK - Bialystok, Pol; GOLDBERG - Gorodok, Belarus; TANNENHOLZ - Krazai, Lith; SIEGEL, Karklanai, Lith; SHNIPER - Vilna, Lithuania; MELLER - Satoraljaujhely, Hungary

Yiddish translation request for two letter fragments
#general
I previously posted these two Yiddish letter fragments to ViewMate, but no
one volunteered to translate them. I apologize if either or both of them are upside down. They have been archived in ViewMate at: http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/all/viewmateview.asp?key=5718 and http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/all/viewmateview.asp?key=5719 These are fragments of a letter, so I would understand if they do not quite make sense when translated, however, my knowledge of the LANDMAN family history may help me decipher them if someone would be kind enough to translate them into English. Many thanks for any assistance. Martin Fischer Oak Park, Illinois The Fischer and Levin family history Web site is at: http://mefischer1.home.comcast.net/ MODERATOR NOTE: Please send translations privately.

Unfortunately they had to get off the train at Shepatovka and could not cross over the border when my grandfather became ill with Typhus. He died there and it took more than two years before they could obtain papers to continue their journey and so they spent time there. miriam shifreen, of Sydney , Australia mirshif@hotmail.com CHALEZKY, Nikopol

Missing Identity of child survivors of Holocaust

Eva Floersheim
The website Missing Identity presents more than 60 child survivors of
Holocaust who are still searching for information about themselves and their families. http://www.jewishgen.org/missing-identity Many of these live here in Israel, some in North America, but several still live in Poland. This last group often did not know about their Jewish background till just a few years ago. Perhaps you will be able to help these young survivors after reading the profiles? Perhaps you will be able to connect them back to their original Jewish families? Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Eva Floersheim Shadmot Dvorah Israel The Missing Identity website http://www.jewishgen.org/missing-identity/

Re: The Name Yvonne

In response to Julius Cohen's query, "I am looking for the origins of the
name Yvonne. Is it a common Jewish name or is there a Jewish male or female equivalent?" It is a common "French" name. Yvonne is the feminine form of the name Yves or Yvon. These first names were common in Bretagne - or, in English, Brittany - the northwestern part of France. The people of Bretagne had their own language. If memory serves me right, Yves and Yvonne are the equivalent of the French names Jean and Jeanne. My favorite doll in Belgium, when I was a four year old, in 1928, was named Yvonne.
