Dear Dominique

My cousin Annie Weich knows Colienne Schwarzenberg >from the time when
Annie's father was a diplomat in Italy and Colienne's father was the
Austrian ambassador in Rome over the same period. I have forwarded your
email to Annie - and she has passed it on to Colienne, now Colienne Meran.

Annie, who has given me permission to quote >from her email wrote:
"Colienne's father worked during the war for the Red Cross in Geneva. His
Jewish clients, seeing his name, used to ask: "Schwarzenberg? Jew or
Prince?" "Prince", he answered. Either Colienne will know of the activities
of her relative, or she will be interested in trying to find out. One of her
daughters married the richest Austrian Jew, Kahane, by whom she has two
children. Unfortunately the marriage did not last."

I do hope that this "connection" will help you identify the Schwarzenberg
family member who helped your mother

My mother left Vienna in May 1939, at the age of twenty three, for the UK.
After the Anschluss, and before she left Vienna, my mother worked for a
female member of the SCHWARZENBERG family, who secretly organised help for
Jewish family. This help mainly took the form of distributing money. My
mother recalls meeting somewhere in central Vienna, with others. The member

of the Schwarzenberg family gave instructions as to who was to distribute
what to whom. My mother and her family, who were destitute, also received
financial aid >from her.

Can anyone supply any more information about this organisation or of this
member of the Schwarzenberg family?

Re: The GOD family of Vienna {and Kolomea} #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Some days ago I wrote about the postcard from
Theresienstadt to Vienna >from Lola GOD.

Using seven websites: Jewish Records Indexing, Poland
jri-pl; the Jewish cemetery database, Austria; Letter
to the Stars {LTTS}; Yad Vashem; Avotaynu {Living
Heirs}; Aufbau and the best-known internet auction
site [this cannot be listed because of prevailing
Jewishgen rules on commercial sites], it is now
possible to reconstruct the fate of this tragic GOD
family >from Vienna, who probably came >from Kolomea in
Galicia.

1. On Jri-pl you will find a few entries for records
under the name GOD in Kolomea

2. The only person of that name buried in Vienna with
that name is Israel GOD - burial 20.09.1875 -
presumably at Wahring and reinterred at
Zentralfriedhof Gate IV. Group 22, when part of
Wahringerfriedhof was used in WW2 as a firepond.

3. Lola [19.08.1912] and Adolf GOD [11/10/1911] were a
young married couple living in Vienna. It is possible
that Adolf's parents were Josef and Katharina {see
LTTS}. Josef [05/11/1871] and Katharina [30/10/1880]
were also holocaust victims. DOB given in brackets.

4. Josef GOD has an Austrian Asset file: dob same as
above - 05.11.1871 This file will have to be checked
{see Avoytanu}.

5. Could this be the birth of Josef on the jri-pl
database? Note that his father is Wigdor - and this
suggests that Josef might be the father of Awigdor
[Viktor] buried at Gate IV, Vienna ZF: {see point 12}

Josel 1871; Father Wigdor GOD - Mother Süssel DIENER

6. Lola probably became pregnant in August 1943, while
she and her husband Adolf GOD lived in Vienna.

7. On November 11th 1943, Lola and Adolf were deported
from Vienna to Theresienstadt >from Rembrandtstr. 25/2,
a Sammeladresse in the second district. We must assume
Tana was born in Theresienstadt {see LTTS - where her
birth date is given after the date of deportion, yet
her birth, amazingly is registered, perhaps at the
IKG, Vienna?}.

8. On April 25th 1944 Lola gave birth to baby Tana in
Theresienstadt {see LTTS and Yad vashem}.

9. On July 4th 1944 Lola wrote the thank you postcard
that was sent to Grete BREUER at the wartime IKG -
known as the Judenrat, Seitenstettengasse, Vienna. It
is signed by Lola and Tana. Adolf is not mentioned on
the card - perhaps this was prohibited or she
genuinely did not know where he was incarcerated.

10. On September 28th 1944, Adolf GOD, 33 years old,
was deported >from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz {see Yad
vashem and LTTS}.

11. On October 23rd 1944 baby Tana, 6 months old, and
her mother Lola, 32 years old, were deported from
Theresienstadt to Auschwitz, where they were murdered.
{see Yad vashem and LTTS}.

12. Uri Meretz suggests [I have his permission to
quote] that Awigdor God, buried in Vienna at Gate IV
ZentralFriedhof is identical to Viktor GOD, a
Buchenwald survivor listed in Aufbau. The dates fit.
You will note that a Sidonie GOD also returned to
Vienna. Awigdor could be the son of Josef {see Point
5} whose father is named Wigdor on the jri-pl Kolomea
database.

It is amazing that one can do this detective work with
the skimpy additional evidence of the pathetic
postcard. What is upsetting is that the postcard was
probably bought by a buyer >from Argentina because of
the unpleasant stamp that attracts collectors, not the
terrible history behind the card.

Little Tana has the tragic life history of being
conceived in Vienna, born in Theresienstadt and
murdered in Auschwitz. She should have been a smiling
six month-old baby - the pride and joy of her parents
and grandparents. A forgotten child of her time, now
remembered at last, by all of us, sixty one years
after her murder, through the chance discovery of a
postcard that has miraculously survived the holocaust.

Dear Genners,
I recently found a slip of paper in the documents that I have
collected for my husband's family. A person denoted as "me" had
taken the time to draw a partial family tree. I know that the
"me" is the child of Frieda and David WOLFE of Glasgow, Scotland.

The generation two above "me" consisted of Adolph & Fanny
Reichman/Richman (>from Chicago in 1920 and 1930 at least), Meyer
& Bertha (possibly Chicago), Bertha & Meyer(with descendents in
UK), Yisrael (with descendents in Israel) and Ida.

Our family lore says they were >from Odessa, but my husband's
grandfather had lived in Brest immediately before he departed for
the U.S. We also know that his great grandparents had a picture
taken in Warsaw at the turn of the century.

If anyone out there is "me" or recognizes any part of this

of this information to other possible candidates on the JewishGen

Dear Genners,
To make the things clear please take in consideration that
"meshchanin" was one of five formal estates of Russian society since
the second half of 18 cent.
These estates had different priveleges and civil rights and they were:
- the nobility
- the clergy
- the merchants
- the petty bourgeoisie (meshchane)
- the peasantry
The two last estates were socially lowest. The meshchane were urban
residents while the peasants lived in country side and were the
subject to serfdom.
The Jews in their great majority were ranked with "meshchane", the
richest of them could acquire the rank of merchant. No Jew could be a
peasant.
The estates were cancelled in 1917. =20
