JGS - Hamilton (Ontario, Canada) & Area - Wed, May 11th Meeting
#general
HJB <hjb@...>
Please join us for the next meeting of The Jewish Genealogical
Society - Hamilton & Area to be held on Wednesday, May 11th, 2005 at Temple Anshe Sholom, 215 Cline Avenue North, Hamilton. Meet & Greet at 7:30 Announcements & Speaker at 8PM. We're happy to welcome back one of our founding members, Moishe Gold, who will update us on the ongoing Cemetery Restoration Project which began in 2001 with Ozarow, Poland, the birthplace of both his parents. The project now has 56 Eastern European Cemeteries in the process of being restored. In addition to the importance of these projects as memorials to our loved ones, these restorations are important genealogically as every bit of information we can glean about our ancestors may bring us closer to breaking down those "brick walls" we sometimes face. At the conclusion of our speaker's presentation we will have a "roundtable discussion" which we hope will help to set the focus of next season's activities. We want to hear >from you about what you've liked and what you want in our future. The last pre-summer meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 22nd and will be our AGM (we will vote for Board members and approve our first set of By-Laws) plus a different kind of presentation we hope you will find interesting. We are again working on a summer visit to the Hamilton Family History Centre. Last summer's visit was just what some of our members needed to begin their journeys. Membership in the JGS - H & A is open to all regardless of religious affiliation or level of experience. Our members range from those at the beginning of their journeys to long-time familyresearchers. We offer assistance locally as well as through a vast network of sources available through the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. Please visit our new website which can be found at www.jgsh.org. It includes a section called Hamilton Connection. Perhaps you'll meet someone there searching for your family. Email us through our website or at HamiltonJewishGen@canada.com. Hazel Sandow Boon Hamilton, ON, Canada

Galician Cousins in Imperial Russia

Richard Cooper <ricooper@...>
Many thanks to Alexander Sharon for clearing up something that has
always puzzled me! My grandmother Sophie LEWINSTEIN's mother Sara ADLER was born in Ternopil, but her father came >from Berdicev which is on the border between the Russian provinces of Volhynia and Kiev. Although the ADLERs were wealthier than Sussman LEWINSTEIN my great-grandparents in fact lived in Berdicev for the first 15 years of their married life before emigrating to London, UK in 1893. I always wondered how a Berdicev boy could have met a Ternopil girl given the restrictions on Jewish travel in der heim: and now I know! Thanks again and best wishes Richard Cooper Gosport, UK BORENSTEIN, MATELEVITCH and GODZINSKIJ >from Warsaw LEZTER, RINENBERG & SALENDER >from Rzeszow & Kolbuszowa MILLET & ENGELBERG >from Dabrowa Tarnowska & Lezajsk ADLER & FINKELSTEIN >from Tarnopol LEWINSTEIN >from Berdichev YAROSHEVSKY & SHAPOCHNIKOW >from Odessa

BENJAMIN, LEVER Lithuania to UK

Susan <susanplouffe@...>
My LEVER relatives emigrated >from Zagare, Lithuania to the UK 1893-1895. On
my grandfather's and brother's naturalization papers their surname is stated as BENJAMIN. This was their mother's surname. There were four brothers that I know of that emigrated, and they all changed their surname to LEVER, shortly afterwards. They were all fine art dealers. (dates aproximate) Parents: Aharon and Dinah (Benjamin) Lever born 1850's William Levey Lever (1871) - Annie (Abrahams) Lever (1875) Children- Abraham, David, Rose Victoria, Lily, Aaron Levey and Victor George Levey apparently born in England but I have seen no record, settled in Glasgow, Scotland and attended the Garnethill Synagogue. I have death records for all of these people except Abraham. I don't know where he went. Michael Lever (1874), last known in Glasgow, Scotland in 1901 Louis Lever (1874) - Ruth (Isitt) Lever (1889) Children- Michael, Richard, Burton-Upon-Trent and Southport, England Sidney Isaac Lever (1879) - Ethel Minnie (Marks) Lever Children- Pauline Bournemouth, England These are the only family members that I know of. I have no idea what happened to Michael Lever last known in Glasgow born 1874, there is no marriage or death record for him in Scotland or England that I have been able to find. If anyone has any knowledge of this family or descendants, or suggestions as to how to find further information it would be greatly appreciated. Dear Fellow Genners,
Another family mystery :>) My *Silverman* family is >from Zinkov, Ukraine. They settled in Providence, RI in 1887. Silverman is not the original family name. The two names that I have been given as the *real* name are APPLEBAUM and GIMMELMAN. I haven't found anyone in JGFF researching either name >from Zinkov or elsewhere in Podolsky. The spelling of the names can vary; APFLEBAUM, HIMMELMAN, etc. The furthest back I've been able to research is MORDECHAI bar ZE'EV WOLF. MORDECHAI was born about 1851, supposedly in Zinkov. Has anyone researching Zinkov (or Podolsky) come across either family name (with any variation of spelling)? Any information, suggestions or input is, as always, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and please respond privately. Regards, Linda Silverman Shefler Cary, NC linsilv@nc.rr.com
