Murderous Medicine by Dr. Naomi Baumslag #lithuania

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

This is a one-time posting regarding the forthcoming publication on May 18,
2005, of the book "Murderous Medicine" by Dr. Naomi Baumslag, Clinical
Professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University Medical School and
President of the Womens' International Public Health Network. Published by
Greenwood Publishing Group, the book is 304 pages and is available >from most
large-scale book stores and Jewish outlets.

Formerly >from South Africa, Dr. Baumslag wrote the book in memory of over 48
of her relatives who were killed in the Holocaust in Belarus, Latvia and
Lithuania. She has researched extensively the relationship of health
professionals and human rights both during the Holocaust and in apartheid
South Africa and has served on national and international human rights
committees. In addition, she and her husband Dr. Ralph Yodaiken have
contributed articles to "Avotaynu" and have presented papers at IAJGS
Conferences on their genealogical and life experiences.

"Murderous Medicine" focuses on the over 1.5 million concentration camp
prisoners who died of typhus, a preventable disease. Despite measures
developed to control and prevent the outbreak of typhus, German doctors used
the disease to encourage a form of biological warfare against those who did
not fit into their racist ideology, i.e., the Jews, Slavs, and gypsies.

Despite this rampant racial policy, Jewish doctors managed to struggle to
save their patients and prevent further outbreaks where possible. Their
valient efforts were not successful as they faced overwhelming odds, but, at
least, they tried their best. The book also discusses the role of the
International Red Cross during and after WWI and WWII and it details the
complicity of multinational corporations in the furtherance of Nazi typhus
research.

The book stresses not only the results of the lack of ethics during WWII by
the German medical profession, but the importance today of monitoring and
holding accountable the medical profession, researchers and drug companies
who put their efforts into the development of biological agents as weapons
of war.

This is a fascinating study of a little-known topic which affected many of
our relatives during the Holocaust. It underscores their suffering and
death as a result of the unethical behavior by those who ignored the
Hypocratic Oath and societal codes of ethical behavior.

Kupishok: For Eternal Memory - DVD Available #southafrica

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

This is a one-time posting regarding the availability of a new DVD entitled
"Kupishok: For Eternal Memory" which is available through the Brandeis
University National Center for Jewish Film:

http://www.brandeis.edu/jewishfilm/Catalogue/films/Kupishok.html

The film which runs 60 minutes and costs $18 plus shipping and handling,
recreates the July 13, 2005 dedication of the Kupiskis Wall of Memory
Holocaust Memorial in Kupiskis, Lithuania. The Wall, located in what was
the former main synagogue of Kupiskis and now public library, is the first
memorial in Lithuania to list those killed and their ages.

The participants in the film, who ranged >from age 8 to 87 and who came from
America, Australia, the United Kingdom, Israel, Lithuania, and South Africa,
shared a special and binding heritage in this small shtetl whose Jewish
population was destroyed in the summer of 1941.

The destruction of the community was truly made personal as those who
participated in the ceremonies, both Jewish and Lithuanian, saw the vast
array of over 824 names before them, just regular people, men, women and
children, of all ages, an entire group of people, gone forever. One had
only to go outside the former synagogue where the Wall was located and look
in the central square to see the stores and homes where this community once
was based, or go to Synagogue Street and see where many lived, to know what
a loss had occurred.

Hearing huge numbers in the millions of those killed in the Holocaust numbs
one as one participant stated, but actually seeing those numbers made real
with names and ages is horrifying, especially when they are your family,
friends and neighbors.

For those of you who have connections to Kupiskis and wish to learn more
about the trip there and the shtetl, please go to the Kupiskis ShtetLink
Site:

http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/kupiskis/memmain.htm

I hope you will take advantage of the availability of this film which is
dedicated to Norman Meyer, the trip's leader, who passed away shortly after
the completion of the trip.

Dear Genners,

Compiling the inverntory of Italian resources for Jewish genealogy I found
few but important information about Jewish records in Genova before
unification of Italy (which occurred in the half of the 19th century).
In State Archive of Genova are stored:
1) a census of 1662.
2) permissions to Jewish physicians and merchant (1417-1805)
3) 700 documents of lawsuits, testaments, contracts (Hebreorum
