Finding someone from 1930s/1940s New York City: Lillian FLORMAN KATZ
#general
A. E. Jordan
I need help finding/figuring our how to find Lillian FLORMAN KATZ who
lived in the New York - New Jersey area in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Here's what I know: she was a maid of honor at a family wedding that took place in New York City (Manhattan) in August 1920 and she is listed as Miss Lillian Florman. In my great grandfather's (Jacob JOSEPH) will in 1941 he leaves money to his niece Lillian KATZ. So if all the dots connect, Lillian FLORMAN's mother's maiden name was JOSEPH, but I do not know the mother's first name. Some where after 1920 Lillian FLORMAN married a man named KATZ. The mother would had been a sister to Jacob and Israel JOSEPH. Assuming (which I know is a bad starting place) that Lillian was a young woman at the time of the 1920 wedding I have been looking in the US Census for a Lillian, Lillie, Lilly, (etc) >from 1920 named FLORMAN. I can not find one who fits the descriptions. Several people helped pull people out of the Census >from 1900, 1910 and 1920 but none of the people in the census fit. I gave up on the Census because I can not find the person. I tried going to the court and looking at the papers in my great grandfather's estate but there was nothing there about Lillian despite the fact she was left money. No papers with her signing for the money, etc. The will itself >from 1941 gives no further information nor a husband's name to try and pin it down at all. I am at a deadend right now and need someone to help repoint me or better yet for someone to reply and say they know this woman. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks. Allan Jordan

Thanks to all of you who helped me or volunteered to translate my
documents. I have many names and don't need any more. I've had several people email questioning the documents for Dorohoi that I found. Actually there was an article in Avotaynu late last summer or fall stating the new records at the LDS and the films for Dorohoi were on the list. Here it is: If searching under Title: Metrical books 1869-1902 If searching under author: Jewish Congregation Herta (Dorohoi)(Main Author) Film 2329599 item 2 births 1869-1874 item 3 1875-1880 item 4 1877-1883 Film 2329600 item 1 births 1883-1884 item 2 1885-1893 item 3 1893-1901 item 4 1900-1901 Film 2329601 item 1 births 1901-1902 item 2 deaths 1877-1884 item 3 1885-1891 Film 2329602 item 1 deaths 1891-1892 item 2 1893-1901 All records are in Roumanian. translation from Polish needed - 1874 birth record from Przasnysz Archives (ViewMate 5925)

Renee Steinig <rsteinig@...>
Thanks to JRI Poland, I ordered Laja KRA's 1874 birth record
from the Przasnysz Polish State Archives. The Laja (Leah) I amresearching was the daughter of Gershon KRA, so I was happy to see that name on the third line. But that's all I could read on this Polish document. I'd be grateful if someone would tell me the date and place of Laja's birth, the name of her mother, and any other genealogically significant details. The birth record will be on ViewMate (VM5925) until next Sunday, April 24. To view it, please go to data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5925 Please respond privately. Thanks very much. Renee Renee Stern Steinig Dix Hills (Long Island), New York, USA RSteinig@suffolk.lib.ny.us

On 2005.04.15, under a thread entitled "Abigail KATZENELENBOGEN,"
I wrote: Incidentally, my research, blame no one but me, indicates that SaulI received queries about Deborah DRUCKER and her father David DRUCKER, based on my earlier letter to RavSig. Here is the information I was working from. David DRUCKER was according to the memoirs of Rabbi Leon Modena the son-in-law of Rabbi Samuel Judah KATZENELLENBOGEN. Samuel Judah was the Chief Rabbi of the Padua and Venice communities but also in some business ventures including the printing business with this son-in-law who was married to Samuel Judah's daughter Miriam (Rachel Miriam). Rabbi Leon Modena was the person who was called to give the eulogy at Samuel Judah's funeral. David had been in business in Vienna in a time when Jewish printing was highly constrained and documented. David DRUCKER's son Israel Yehiel DRUCKER of Venice was properly surnamed RAPA or RAPAPORT - this >from the fact that Israel DRUCKER printed the book of Moshe RAPA "Pelagi Mayim" and described the author as his brother. Israel Yehiel DRUCKER is also known as the father of Rabbi Aryeh RAPAPORT of Vienna and Prague. So my conclusion is that when Saul WAHL married Deborah DRUCKER, the daughter of David DRUCKER, he was marrying his niece Deborah, the daughter of David RAPA haKohen and Rachel Miriam KATZENELLENBOGEN. It is not clear if Yehiel haMadpis and David DRUCKER (printers of Venice) are the same man or father and son. Because we don't know if "Yehiel ha Madpis" refers to David [Yehiel] the drucker or to Israel son of Yehiel who was called Israel Yehiel. We know that Israel Yehiel was the son of a Yehiel because his brother Moshe RAPA called himself ben Yehiel in his book Pelagi Mayim. So even if David was not the Yehiel haMadpis, his name still would have been David Yehiel RAPA or Yehiel David RAPA. David Yehiel RAPA DRUCKER had at least four children - a son Israel (Israel Yehiel DRUCKER), a son Abraham Menahem RAPA (1569-author of Hote Jair, fl 1628 who was a pupil of Samuel Judah KATZENELLENBOGEN), a son Moshe RAPA (author of Pelagi Mayim) and Deborah DRUCKER Deborah Glassman
