Where Once We Walked reports that Kitay Gorod, Ukr. had a prewar Jewish
population of 1,595. It is 92 km SSE of Vinnytsya at 48o29'/29o01';.
According to Yad VaShem's Encyclopedia of Jewish Life Before and During the
Holocaust, it had a Jewish pop. of 469 as early as 1765, and 735 (out of a
total of 2,794) in 1897. After the German occupation of 25 July, 1941, 180
Jews were expelled to Dashev and executed there.

YadVaShem reports another Kitaigorod in the Kaments-Podolski district. Jews
settled in the 17th c., forming an organized community. In 1765 the J. pop
included 489 taxpayers. In 1897, the J. pop sood at 642. The community
maintained a synagogue and beit hamidrash. In 1905, peasants >from a
neighboring village drove off Cossacks seeking to attach the Jews. In 1919
the Petlyura gangs staged a prgrom and killed 84 Jews. The Germans occupied
the town in July 1941. The Jews were expelled to a labor camp in
Kamenete-Podolski. In Jan 1942 they were murdered with the other Jews in
the area.

I'm not sure which of these is yours. Hope this helps.

Just as another confirmation - my Grandmother was born Bajla, and took the
name Betsy in the UK. I also understand that it was simply a popular name at
the time.

< My grandfather's parents were Myer ADLER and Sarah PASS. They were married
on the 21st November 1893 at the synagogue, 29 Main Street Glasgow. Myer was
24 years old (born 1869) and Sarah was 23 (1870). . . .

Sarah's father was John PASS (butcher) and her mother was Annie (m.s.
FLORE). No records exist in Scotland/UK for John or Annie.>

Sharon,

I suspect Sarah's descent >from John PASS born 5 Jan 1850 in London. His
parents were Naphthali PASS, a butcher of Duke Street, Aldgate, London and
Maria SOLOMON of Chatham, Kent. The PASS family had been butchers for at
least 3 generations. They were a Sephardi family and well documented back
to the early 1700s - the name was PASS de LEON in earlier generations and
originally PAES de LEON. Frustratingly, of all Naphthali's eight children,
John is the one about whom I know least - possibly because he may have left
London for Scotland . . ?

If this sounds likely to you, I have a lot more on this family (who are
related to my direct line by marriage - John's brother Benjamin was married
to a sister of my great-grandmother) which I will be happy to pass on.

How to get parents' birth certificate NYC? #general

Anita Springer <aspringer@...>

I am trying to get a copy of a 1929 birth certificate of my husband's
mother, now deceased. The New York City Dept. of Health website only has
instructions for getting your own birth certificate, or for someone else
with a letter >from the person authorizing you. Will they provide my husband
a copy of his mother's birth certificate and how do we do that?

As a Brooklynite born and bred I would say Ya'akov with Jacob a no-no and
Jerome a snazzy alternative.

Bessie ROTHSTEIN from Los Angeles #general

Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>

I looking for information on a Bessie ROTHSTEIN who died in Los Angeles
on 4/30/1952.
Her maiden name was BORDOWITZ and it is possible that it was not her
maiden name but her married name >from a prior marriage.

I have two questions:
1. Is anyone out there familiar with this Bessie ROTJSTEIN? if so,
please contact me privately
2. I found this information on ancestry.com in the California Death
Index (1940-1997) and there is an option to order the original death
record. Does anyone know if there is much additional information
likely to be contained in the original record, such as parents,
next-of-kin, location of burial?

Thank,

Marty Meyers
