Who lived in the shetls?
#general
Joan Rosen <jrosen@...>
Re: the question >from Tereasa Lenius
"Perhaps this is a silly question, but, did only Jews live in the Shetls found using the Shetl seeker? I know that my Great grandfather and all of his brothers were born in a Nowa Wies (which one I don't know). I know absolutely nothing about these villages. Also, I would like to thank all of you who have answered my previous message. It is wonderful to know that people are willing to help. Thank you again. " from a course I took in Eastern European Jewish history which dealt, amongother things, with life in the shtetl, yes indeed non-Jews lived there---those of the peasant class did live with the Jews, though not necessarily in the same part of the town. The peasants were customers of the Jews who ran the stalls/stores in the marketplace. Joan Rosen jrosen@voicenet.com Elkins Park, outside Philadelphia PA, US

BAER(BEHR) in Baden
#germany
jraronson
After several years I am resubmitting a search for my lost g grandmother's
family. She was born Lina Wohl BAER somewhere in Baden on June 10 1849. Census said Baden Baden. Her mother was Fanny WOHL, but evidently not the one who married Moses SCHNAPPER as she died in 1840. Lina married Gabriel BAMBERGER >from Angenrod(Angerod), Hesse Darmstadt where there is no marriage record( also none in Alsfeld). They emigrated to the US about 1879. He was asked to come to America by Felix ADLER (founder of the Ethical Culture Society) where he established and became principal of the Workingmen's School of New York. In 1890 he accepted the position of superintendent of the Jewish Manual Training School in Chicago. Lina had sisters Amelia and Bertha and a brother Otto Julius Behr. Several of their children were born Frankfurt AM before they moved to the US. James ARONSON Winchester, MA <jraronson@comcast.net>

Stark County, Ohio Natllization online
#general
Adelle Gloger
Dear Genners,
I have made a great discovery for anyone researching Stark County, Ohio ( County seat is Canton). Actual images of Declaration of Intention and Petition for Naturalization are online in PDF format and printable. The search page is: http://www.starkcountycjis.org/common_pleas/natural/index.html I found someone that I had been searching for. I now know when he arrived, on which vessel, and the fact that he stated that he entered New York on the C.P.R.R. I interpret that to mean that he initially arrived in a Canadian port and entered the USA via railway. Am I making the correct assumption? I also now know when his wife (the one I'm really looking) arrived in NYC., etc. So, anyone researching Stark County, Ohio the naturalization records are an excellent starting point. Dear Siggers,
The Senior Account Clerk of Cemeteries herself tried out her digital camera and took very acceptable photos of my family, so I'm withdrawing the request. Judith Berlowitz, Berkeley <jberlowitz@prodigy.net>
