Latvia: Synagogues and Rabbis (1918-1940) #latvia

Marion Plotkin

Please advise...would this book be of interest to Kurlander
descendants? All of my family left Latvia's Kurland region
and Riga in the late 1800's. They were German speaking and
became active members of the KYMMAS Kurlander Young Men's
Mutual Aid Society in New York when they came to America.
My grandfather attended these meetings faithfully to keep
in touch with his "brethren ," and was very proud of his
Kurlander heritage. This heritage is what I would like to
know more of.

Are you familiar with the "Historical Review of the Kurlander
Young Men's Mutual Aid Society ?" There is a description of
this little Memorial Book on the Latvia Data Base which came
from a copy that I donated to Latvia Sig for sharing. The book
was written in commemoration of the organization's Thirty-fifth
Anniversary, which was celebrated on January 20, 1924. If you have
not read it I would be happy to send you a copy. Marion Plotkin ,
marion5@optonline.net

From: "Donald and Sandra Hirschhorn" <donsandyh@earthlink.net>

We have a copy of the book and what many people probably don't realize
is that it covers a wealth of information prior to 1918 including
photographs on almost every page.

I have posted a letter, written by my late father, when he was applying to

Interpreting Polish-JRI-pl records: FELDMANN and SINGER #germany

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>

Following my recent query about the identity of Mrs.
FELDMANN, born SINGER, I have now discovered records
for "banns" of a SINGER and a FELDMANN on the Jri-pl
site of JewishGen.

In a listing entitled
"Krakow Marriages 1798-1805,07,08,11-52,69-88
Krakow Wojewodztwa / Krakow Province "

There is a "SINGER Małka" and a "FELDMANN Dawid".

These two names are together in the listing and have identical "year", "Akt" and
"Film" numbers and both are followed by the word "Banns". (The Year=1838)

QUESTION: Does this suggest that these two people were
about to get married?

Another discovery that I have made in "Krakow JHI marriages
1877,93-99,1904-6,9,13,19,21,24,29 Krakow Wojewodztwa / Krakow Province" is
an 1877 marriage record for :

"FELDMANN Gaja 1877 M 31 998 Isak Malka SINGER "
i.e for Gaja FELDMANN, daughter of Isak FELDMANN and Malka, born SINGER.

QUESTION:Is it possible that Dawid and Isak FELDMANN were one and the same person?

Hello SIG members,
I just came across these documents belonging to my Grandparents -
Joel and Fajga GEWIRCMAN and I am baffled by the fact that these are >from 1942 and
contain Nazi stamps.

What I knew >from them is that they continuously dodged transports by
use of fake documents portraying them as a Polish-Catholic family - Schepula.
I marked specially areas in RED to narrow down required translation.
If anyone can add information on this issue or document type - please do.

The documents can be found in ViewMate:

Thank you to those who replied on the origin of DAEFELE or DEFELE. Both
Ralph Baer and Lars Menk connected it to a dimunitive of the David,
with Lars giving me my own family's adoption of this surname in
Kochendorf as the source of his information on this surname. It does
still appear to be an unusual name. Thanks!

Bruce Reisch <bir1@...>

Alan:

Bukovina was the easternmost "crownland" (a province or district
encompassing numerous cities and villages) of the Austrian Empire.
Today it is split between a portion of western Ukraine and northern
Romania. During Austrian times (pre-WWI), it became a prominent
center of Jewish and Yiddish culture.

The former capital of Bukovina, Czernowitz (today Chernivtsi), is
located in the Ukraine. More information on this city can be found

Sally Bruckheimer <sallybru@...>

She wouldn't. Most likely she named the son after the same grandfather the
brother was named after - or another Moses on the other side of the family.
