Two large directories of Romanian businesses and organizations are available
online through the Library of Congress' website,
http://www.loc.gov/rr/european/phonero/romdir.html, but they are difficult
to work with, since they are not globally alphabetized by surname. To
facilitate their use, I have created a search engine for these directories
(and others) at www.kalter.org/search.php. Please keep in mind that
searches are case sensitive and sensitive to accented characters. You can
also use the wildcard character ?, which I recommend doing if your name is
long or contains characters that can be easily mistaken for each other in
the OCR (optical character recognition) process I used to created the search
engine, such as e, c, and o.

If you have success using this search engine, I would like to hear about it.
Also, if you know of any other digitized directories (online or in private
possession) that would benefit >from being made searchable, please tell me.

Luplui may be erroneous, on the other hand... In Romanian, "lup" means
wolf, "lupul" the wolf, and "lupului" or "luplui,",the possessive is
literally "of the wolf" or "wolf's"... I mention this only because,
perhaps coincidence, a well-known Carpathian Mtn ski trail is named
"Lupului", it is near Romania's famous Poiana-Brasov ski area... and
Hunedoara, while not_exactly_next door, is in the Carpathian region.
I'm just guessing, and not suggesting your relative was born on a
ski-slope, but that "Luplui" may be a popular "neighborhood"
designation in this region, given the legends and the actual wildlife
there? Not even large enough for a village, but for a hamlet, a hill...

If you do a browser search of Hunedoara and/or Poiana-Brasov, you will
come up with several sites in English for the ski areas/tourism and
chamber of commerce/municipal type places. Maybe, write and ask them if
Hunedoara has a local "Wolf's" spot?
Don't laugh at me :-) I'm not joking, although iit seems more likely
that you are probably looking for Lupeni..

Looking for any GERSHMAN relatives >from Beltsy ( Bessarabia /Moldavia)
I am very interested in finding any relatives I might have in USA,
Israel, Moldavia or South America.
My father's family is >from Beltsy.
My grandmother's name was Dina Gershman, and she was born in April of
1915. She had an older brother Boris Gershman, and younger sister Rosa
Gershman. Her father's name was Aaron, and mother's name was Chavah (
although, I am not a 100% sure). While still living in Beltsy, in May of
1941, my grandmother had a son named Gregory, who is my father. I do not
have any information about who was the husband of my grandmother, or
even if she had any.
According to my grandmother , when she was a little girl her mother's
sister immigrated to South America.
In 1941, right after the World War II started, all Gershman family left
Beltsy in order to survive Nazi invasion. Shortly after war was over
they were all living in the Russian city Novosibirsk.
In the beginning of the 20th century, majority of Jewish families were
big, so I am sure that my grandmother's parents had many brothers and
sisters. I am hoping this will help me to finding my roots and long lost
relatives that I might have.

My father's family is >from Beltsy.
My grandmother's name was Dina Gershman, and she was born in April of

I have a Haggadah probably published in 1929 (undated) leather bound which
has English translation and then switches to French 2/3 of the way through.
This volume was obviously misbound. Somewhere there may be a Haggadah
starting with French translation and ending with English!

to get details on Israel RUTMAN. He came to Chicago around 1916, married a
Rose TOBIN, then retired to Miami Beach around 1965. They had no children.
I have his death certificate and last will & testament.

by 5 years. He left his estate to his brother-in-law and 8 nephews and
nieces. I could not locate his brother-in-law, Robert Hankins, in Skokie,
although there was a Hankewicz at his address. I am asking anyone in the
Chicago area if you can look up the Israel RUTMAN/Rose TOBIN marriage record.
I don't know when they were married. He probably has an application for
naturalization on record in Cook county. That application will probably give
me the date of arrival,ship he arrived on, and confirm the Russian city he came
from.

Israel RUTMAN is one of four young men who travelled together across Siberia
to Japan and arrived in Seattle in 1916. My father was one of the four. I
have managed to get all the information on another of the four and made
contact with his family (as well as a reunion with my father's family) on a
trip to Russia last summer. I plan another trip in the future and would
like to meet Mr. RUTMAN'S family as well.
