VM 5679-80: Translation Help for 1807 Judeo-German Letter
#general
Cary Aufseeser <cary@...>
I recently received a letter written in Judeo-German (German language in
Hebrew script, similar to Yiddish). The letter was written in 1807 to my 4th great grandparents, >from my 4th great grandmother's brother, on the occasion of their father's death. An attempt was made several years ago to translate this letter into German. I have placed both the original letter and the attempt to translate the letter on Viewmate: http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5679 http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5680 Can anyone translate this letter into English and send the response to me privately? Dear Genners,
Now that I have written up and self-published my family history-- tracing their backgrounds and migrations >from Latvia and Belarus (i.e., the Russian Empire) to Liverpool and, later, to Chicago--can you advise me where I should donate a copy for maximum public access? Should I donate it to the Mormons, to YIVO, to Brandeis, to the Library of Congress? What have you done with yours? --Best, Laura Laura Moss Gottlieb Wisconsin, USA Searching for DANKERS (Latvia, Liverpool, Chicago) Searching for FREEDKINS (Belarus, Liverpool, Chicago) Searching for MOSSES/MATKOVICHES (Belarus, Liverpool, Chicago)

Re: London Marriages and Births

Dick Plotz
Based on various stories of questionable information that have been
related in this group over the years, I would suggest looking for your grandfather's birth not in London, but in the place of the family's origin. Your great-grandparents may have thought, possibly with some justification, that having been born in London would confer an advantage on your grandfather, compared with birth in a shtetl, and given that information to all concerned, including your grandfather himself. Dick Plotz Providence RI USA Robert Corwin wrote: "My father's father was born in London "on the way over" to NY. I've had no idea if that meant they spent the afternoon in the harbor, or several years there. The family has always "known" the birth date, and I spent half a day at the archives in London, but came up dry. As an aside, in the records of several years before, I found birth records for quite a number of Solomon Cohens, but none of the parent info was even close. Even then it seems, first names went through waves of popularity. Turns out, however that he was known as Sol, not Solomon, because it was short for Zalmon. No Zalmons either. Any insights into births in London to families in transit?"

<<Would anyone know if their ancestors ever lived or learned to read and write English at this place between 1912-1913? I'm trying to figure out something regarding my maternal grandparents who may have been there in those years mentioned above.>> Yes, Hull House, which was modelled on England's "Toynbee Hall" began offering language and citizenship classes soon after Jane Addams founded her settlement house. There is more information about Hull House on the web. Jane Addams readily available book 'Twenty Years at Hull House," may also interest Ms. Sobel. Do you recognize couple from London?
#general
Hannah Engelstad
Dear Genners,
I have posted 2 photos to Viewmate. They were both taken at the same photography studio in London, England around 1905. The one photo is of a couple - I do not know who they are and am asking your help in seeing if anyone recognizes them. The other is of my grandfather, Wolf Bernstein (name was changed >from Lekachmacher) - he had come to England as a young man >from Zhitomir and possibly stayed with this couple. They may be family but then again, they might not be. Does anyone recognize the couple or my grandfather? On both pictures the address of the studio was as follows: Empire Day and Electric Light Studios Established 1896 Oscar Baumgart 118 Commercial Road London The photos can be viewed at: http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5729 http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5730 Please contact me privately if you recognize these people. Thank you for your help. Warm Regards, Hannah Engelstad, Canada hannahengelstad@hotmail.com

Laupheim file
#germany
reuven <mor@...>
Thanks to all of you, and especially to our moderator, who sent suggestions
where to make accesssible a file like my Laupheim Gedcom. It seems that within the JewishGen frame the solution would be to create a webpage on "Shtetlinks" - which I will not do for lack of technical skills. So no doubt there are branches where JewishGen could grow. Other, "outside" suggestions were LBI, the Berlin Jewish Museum and other archives around the globe. Maybe coming generations will create more online possibilities - in and outside JewisGen. Best regards, Reuven Mohr Israel mor@cbs.gov.il
