I just found my print-out of your e-mail inquiring some time ago about my
Ukraine Sirotas. Since I think you never got a real answer, I hope you're still
interested; although I have little enough information. Here's what I do have,
on my gm, Chaya Gittel SIROTA:

= hometown: Zamekhov in Podolia, Ukraine, east of Kam-Pod., west of Vinnitsya;
had farming and petty merchant family in neighboring townlets, towns
= birth: based on her marriage, probably around 1870 +/-
= marriage: ca. 1885 +/-, to Eli Melech TREIGER of Zamekhov and/or nearby
Snitkov (east of Zam.)
= death: ca 1924-6, likely in Mogilev-Podolskiy
= son-in-law: Meyer ZEKTSER of Zamekhov married daughter Anna/Ennie
= (probably extraneous, but... some of Chaya Gittel's sisters-in-law: Golda
SIBELBERG and Bella/Velia/Bilka POL(Y)AK, possibly also a BRONSHTEIN in-law.)

Is there anything here you recognize? Anything you have you'd care to share? If

I am intrigued by the following entry in Doreen Berger's book The Jewish
Victorian 1871 - 1880:

26/3/1880
Poena Harrison. Death at the residence of her husband, Old De Boers Road,
Kimberley, late of Sheffield, beloved wife of Louis Harrison and daughter of
Abraham Levy of Manchester, aged 33 years.

I think that Poena may be the daughter of my g-g-grandfather Abraham Levy

from Rogassen/Manchester, >from his first wife, Pauline. I am descended from

his second wife. While I have Abraham Levy and his family in the 1851
census, living in Long Millgate, Manchester, newly arrived in the country,
there is no mention of this daughter in this particular census. She appears,
however, in the 1861 census, when the family was living at 3 Fernie Street.
The census is difficult to read and I had her down as Leona, but this could
perhaps be misread as Poena. She is no longer living with her father in
1871.

Poena is the only child of Abraham Levy who is not mentioned in his will -
possibly because she had died. That she went to South Afica is of interest,
because several of her half brothers also went to South Africa in the late
nineteenth century, albeit to the Cape region (ALiwal North).

I have searched for records for both Poena Levy and Louis Harrison in
various places online, including free BMD, JGSGB Members' Corner, the
Mormons' website and the all-UK database on Jewishgen, but have so far
turned up nothing, not a shred of evidence that either of them ever existed.

Perhaps someone is able to shed some light on the life (or death) of these
two people. I would particularly be very happy if someone could give me some
guidance as to what records are available for the Jewish Community in
Kimberley as this is an area that is new to me. A quick search of the net
today on the subject of South African records turned up very little useful
information.

Any help will be much appreciated.

LOBIE -- Altona Hamburg Germany.
My great grandfather was William (wilhelm) LOBIE, Documentation states he
was born in Altona about 1835. He arrived in Melbourne Victoria Australia
apparently on his own aged 16 years in 1851. He spent 4 years in Victoria
and then 4 years in New South Wales before coming to Queensland where he
spent the rest of his life. He died in 1893 in Brisbane Queensland Australia.

In Australia the name has been spelt LOBIE, LOBEI and LOBEY on various documents.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
