Help in breaking a brick wall!

Saba Isio <sabaisio@...>
Shalom Genners
Maybe someone out here/there can help me break a brick wall. For about 50 years have been trying to find descendants of two great Uncles of mine David (DOB abt. 1872) and Aaron (DOB abt.1874) sons of Shmuel Gedalia the son of Moshe. According to family lore their family name was Pizem. The two (or maybe one after the other) emigrated to the USA towards the end of the 19th century in the 1890s. The family last heard >from them a short time, after they had emigrated to the USA having relocated to the greater Chicago IL,USA area. This is where I remained stuck in my research for the last 50 years. A couple of months back, I received what might be a break or crack into the brick wall. Being a subscriber to MYHERITAGE I was informed that a certain Aaron David Pizem together with wife (maiden name Shapiro) and children emigrated >from Chicago, IL, USA to Australia in the early part of the 20th century abt. 1910s. Two of their children were born in the Chicago area Samuel Abraham Pizem DOB abt 1900, and Monahan Pizem DOB abt.1912 a daughter Rachel Pizem was born in Australia DOB 26 Nov 1930 she married Gordon Joseph Walker. If to anyone this story rings a bell or can assist me in joining the dots together so that I can join and meet new/old family members will be deeply appreciated. Please reply to my personal email address sabaisio@yahoo.com. I promise if this brick wall crumbles I will publish the success story in JewishGen. Thank you in advance, Aizic Sechter Israel

obermayer@...
The Obermayer Foundation, in cooperation with the President of the
Berlin House of Representatives, the Leo Baeck Institute, and GerSIG, is pleased to announce the Call for Nominations for the 2019 Obermayer German Jewish History Awards. In recent decades, many individuals and organizations in Germany have worked creatively and selflessly to preserve, raise awareness of, and breathe new life into the once-vibrant Jewish culture in their communities. Their work crosses many realms including historical restoration, research, storytelling, education, art, and community building. Together, these efforts are making history and some of its most profound lessons accessible to current-day audiences. The Obermayer Foundation recognizes the critical importance of these individuals and organizations, and honors them through its awards program, held each year since 2000. The work of awardees has included such activities as: Restoration of synagogues, cemeteries, and other cultural sites; Researching and synthesizing first-person accounts, histories, and genealogies; Informal education and storytelling via public programs and exhibitions; Formal educational activities focused on schools & other education institutions; Development of websites, videos, publications, and other media; Musical/dramatic performance or artistic creation; Installation of Holocaust memorials and stolpersteine; Forging connections with the descendants of former residents of a community or region; The award program was initiated by Dr. Arthur S. Obermayer (1931-2016). Awards are administered by the Obermayer Foundation. GerSIG co-founder Karen Franklin is president of the jury. Many of you previously submitted nominations. Those nominees who were not successful may be eligible for this year's awards by submitting an updated application. Searching for Tova [GRIGST?] KASPI, daughter of Chasa / Etta ZILBERMAN GRIGST
#general
Hilary Osofsky
I am searching for Tova [GRIGST?] KASPI, who submitted testimony to Yad Vashem for
her mother, Chasa / Etta [ZILBERMAN] GRIGST, in 1956 (Item ID: 656964).Tova might be living in Israel. According to Tova, Chasa, was born in "Chwadan," (sic.) Taurage," to Gita and Mordechai Zilberman in 1889, moved to Memel before World War II, and apparently was living in Swieciany, Poland, during the war. She was murdered at Silale (Yiddish: Shilel). Chasa's photo is posted on Yad Vashem's website. I am searching for Tova because her mother and my grandmother, nee Feige / Fanny Idelovich, were cousins, both born in Chveidan within a year of one another. Feige's parents, my g-grandparents Malke Zilberman and Moshe Idelovich (later known as Morris Edelson), had been living in Chveidan, where they raised their family, from about the 1870's - 1880's on.Our U.S. branch of the family remained in touch with Chasa's older brother, Meir Zilberman, who emigrated to the U.S. in 1886. He settled in Reading, Pennsylvania, where he lived as Morris Silberman / Silverman with his wife, Ida (Cohn), and their children, Hannah, Martha, Philip, Jeannette, Martin, and Thobia. According to Meir's marriage certificate, he was also born in "Chwadan," Russia; his parents were Gita [-] and "Marcus" Zilberman. However, according to Meir's death certificate, his father's Hebrew name was Mordechai. Furthermore, his son, Martin, was named Mordechai in his grandfather's memory. Chasa and Meir also had half-sisters, Sarah and Mary, born c. 1900-1902, who emigrated to the U.S. between about 1910-1916. Mary later married Jack Purcell and emigrated to Israel. Although I only learned of Tova through her testimony, her mother and my grandmother, being the same age and living in the same town, would have known each other as children, before my grandmother was taken to England. Chasa would also have known my great-grandmother, Malke, quite well. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone having information that could help me find Tova would contact me directly either at hilary2@aol.com or hilarymerle@gmail.com. Hilary Osofsky Orinda, California

Seeking Lost Family Members

Hello,
I am attempting to trace my birth father and or his family through various sites. His name is/was Jorge (George) Jones or Jonas >from New York and may have family still living there or in Venezuela. His birthday could be 1945-1955. I do not know any facts about him. My mother told me he was >from a Jewish family in New York and that the had ties to Venezuela. She also mentioned that she decided to convert from her family's Christian faith, to Judaism in order to marry my birth father. So, I know that he must have come to Virginia to meet my mother and spent enough time with her to get engaged and start a family. from there the details become very obscure. My mother died in 2005, her name wasSharon Lee. In her papers I found envelopes >from Venezuela but not letters. Her older sister and her best friends are also in the dark about him, they have not been able to offer any information about his name or birthday or family for me to trace. I don'y know where she went to receive her education for her conversion. She did not attend services, although she would occasionally allow family friends to take me when I was small. She said she did not feel comfortable anywhere. My interest is academic. I would like to know about my fathers family. If I have any. Have children and I would like to be able to know where half of my ancestry comes from, to be able to tell my boys where they come from. I have had genetic testing that was not able to give me definitive markers for any Sephardic Jewish heritage that I was looking for besides Iberian /North African/ Mediterranean genetic material. But I tested positive for a very small amount of Ashkenazi Jewish genetic material that I was not expecting. My mother's family is Irish/Scottish and my genetic material pointed that out, rather obviously. If for some reason, someone knows anything that can help me, I would be grateful and please know that I would treat that information with respect and honor Thank you in advance Warmest Regards, Simone Hnath Norfolk, Virginia MODERATOR NOTE: Discussion about DNA should be continued on the DNA Discussion Group or privately. Responses to Simone about specifics about her family should be sent privately, messages of general interest should be submitted to this Discussion Group.
