Re: Town or village of Piotrkow

Carin,
Name of the village "Naza" doesn't sound Polish or Slavic. Just in case, I've checked all the localities names in Piotrkow Trybunalski and Piotrkow Kujawski regions and found nothing even similar. It helps sometime if you can provide researched names and a copy of the naturalization page where town name is shown. Best Alexander Sharon

NEINKEN parents (Lipmann & Sara) and children (who identified their birthplace as Riga) emigrated to U.S. about 1893. Although there are possible records of this family in Lithuania, I find no other evidence of the NEINKEN name anyplace. Where is the rest of the family--under other names or countries?

Help needed finding Mollie Schiff's immigration papers
#records
SUE KAHN
Mollie Schiff Epstein was born around 1880 according to censuses. She was always known as Mollie, but I discovered that her headstone had the name Chiyene Malka. As far as I know the family was from Slutsk. Mollie's father Zalman Schiff had three wives. Mollie was from the second wife and had a brother Benjamin (Barnett) and a sister Dina (Lena/Dine). I have been searching for immigration and naturalization papers for Mollie using Malka, Mollie, and Chienne with varying spellings of these names. I located an 1899 the manifest with Feigle, Zalman's third wife Dina, Hene (Anna), Hirsch (Harry) and Chaje (Ida). Anna, Harry & Ida were from the third wife. In the 1900 census Chienne Malka was listed as Mollie. Is it likely that the ship manifest would have been Chiyene or Malka or can't one say? Could anyone help me find any immigration papers on Mollie? Although the 1900 census indicated she came in 1890 I cannot find this. I found a Chienne Schiff who immigrated in 1895, but it said her residence was Schweksne, Russland, not Slutsk. Could the family have started in Schweksne? Many questions. Any ideas?

Hi to all who have helped, and Happy(ier) New Year. They moved to sth of France in 1940 and married in Toulouse, in 1940. After the war they applied for French nationailty, were told in 1949 that they had to wait another four years at least (to "Assimilate" more completely). IN 1955 it was granted, but at the mlast moment stopped for three months, following an anonymous denunciation letter sent to the police. This was quickly debunked, and it came trhough early 1956. Fritz died in Luzern, 1958. Marta lived in paris until 1970, when she moved finally to Melbourne. I still have to collate much information from these amazing files, and I am going to post a general new topic re, finding your way around them - quite a labyrinth, in very complex French archives.
Best to you all, David SELIG, Paris

Scattered all over the world, descendants of Jewish families whose roots can be traced back to places in Baden-Württemberg still live today. The Gäu-Neckar-Alb memorial association would like to help to find out the family roots and to establish connections to other families.
This genealogical knowledge database www.juedische-familien.de based on the genealogy software TNG creates a basis for family, local and historical research. It also serves to collect documents, photos and sources, with the help of which the life history of Jewish families can be documented and passed on.
The speaker Andrea Dettling will present which analog and digital sources are relevant for the genealogy of Jewish families, which research possibilities are promising and how the results can be presented professionally.
Using the database www.juedische-familien.de as an example, it will be shown how Jewish citizens searching for their family roots around the world can be helped with archival documents or lists of ancestors to form a picture of the lives of their ancestors in Germany.

Re: Chelmno record of Bajla Fuks born 1923, transport june 28, 1944

Bernard Flam
Hi from Paris, Hello Sharon & Sharon, Searching and finding original documents concerning our Losts in Lodz' ghetto is possible with all online databases already available : an opportunity during our lockdown ! Remember what I wrote previously in this forum (#653706, Dec 17th) :
And additional answer from Ms Megan Lewis, Reference Librarian, USHMM
The collection Bernard referenced, USHMM Archives collection RG-15.083 (click on this link to be taken to the description and finding aid), contains many lists and documents relating to individuals. Several sets of lists or documents have been indexed as part of our World Memory Project in partnership with Ancestry.com. The index is free to access on Ancestry's site. The actual documents are not online but there are instructions on how to order copies. You should also search our Holocaust Survivors and Victims Database which contains names from collections that are not part of the World Memory Project. There are ca. 2482 files from 695 reels.
Lodz ghetto archives aren't available on USHMM web site (only on its Intranet) because (I guess) these archives belong to Polish State Archives. But most of same microfilms of these 800.000 pages are now on line at Polish State Archives (PSA): https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/39/278/0#tabZespol So and fortunately, unit number are same in USHMM Finding Aid and in PSA web site: example : reel 254, unit 1091 (Rumkowski's speeches), is found at 39/278/0/14/1091, https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/39/278/0/14/1091#tabJednostka I must add that a lot of units concerning individuals have been indexed by JewishGen or JRI Poland from Yad Vashem or ORFLI documents : so we will find data already known, but searching directly these archives is a way to access the original papers.
Concerning Bajla Fuks, I searched through "USHMM finding aid" what could be of interest:
Reel 163, file 845 : Alphabetical list of ghetto inhabitants, letter "F" 997 Fuks entries exist in various Lodz ghetto lists... https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/39/278/0/12/845/str/1/1/100/qkJkJki_cwVW-OMUjZCfmA/#tabSkany
As she was in ghetto till the end in June 1944, one possibility is: these lists had been made before Bajla arrived in Lodz ghetto. As lists are for "F", some "Flam" are there: I have no link to them as my family was fully Galizianer (around Olesko / Brody).
Reel 169, file 870 : List of names of people deported from the ghetto in transports organized by Central Prison, June-July 1944 (Wykazy imienne osób wysiedlonych z getta w transportach przesłane przez Centralne Więzienie)
1st page of transport list of 28/6/1944, attached picture 47 https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/39/278/0/12/870/skan/full/q34RHSP9cXhXWZp1b3SABA
Transport of Fuks Bajla, attached picture 50 https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/39/278/0/12/870/skan/full/bsmUU92tJlaXrxaAHfEGzg 8 persons named Fuks have been deported with this transport. 4 had (I don't use intentionally the word "lived"..) same address in ghetto, Holz Strasse, 16 : Bajla (B 1923), Chaja (B 1927), Szajndla (B 1921) & Szulim (B 1928)
So I look at Reel 225, file 1033 : Register books of street Holz,... and search for Holz 16 : https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/39/278/0/13.4/1033/skan/full/tHLI3W_JbfOP22zKJ7-JMQ , attached picture 114 Bajla and her 3 siblings / cousins (?) had a previous address "Siegfried Strasse 6, flat 33". In same page, you get Ghetto ID number of these four persons : 183951 to 183954 Another clue : on a 1st registration in Lodz ghetto, Bajla had a former residence, town of Brzeziny.
Birth archives of Brzeziny exist from 1910 to 1935 : https://www.rtrfoundation.org/results.php?rin=716&testing= I found no Fuks in Reel 305, files 1308, Registration cards of persons destined to deportation and Reel 305, file 1309, List of deportees in alphabetical order.
Reels 673-696 contain Identification cards for Lodz Ghetto worker in alphabetical order, a lot of them with ID pictures. For some unknown reason from me, they aren't available in PSA online archives but they are at USHMM, indexed by JewishGen and you can get copies. Chaja, Szandjla et Szulim cards are indexed :

Perhaps some good will come of it. For example, if the money paid by people seeking to stay healthy allows the prices of advanced geneologically oriented testing to lessen considerably. Question: which privacy and data sharing laws will apply to the new conglomerate: US or Australian.?

Re: Who is the better option for DNA: siblings or father and son?
#dna
kleincentral1@...
Hi Carol. There are a lot of factors involved, so we need more information to give you a better answer. As others have said, it is always best to test the oldest generation first. However, you also have to decide which company to test with and what type of test. You will find the most relatives by doing an autosomal test. Ancestrydna has the largest database. From Ancestry, you can upload to familytreedna, MyHeritage, and gedmatch. Uploads are free, but there are small fees for added services. You can also do autosomal testing at 23andMe if you want to look for more matches. Neither Ancestry nor 23andMe accept uploads, so you have to test directly on those sites. If you are interested in Y-DNA, you have to test directly on ftdna (family tree) since an uploaded kit can't be used for that. Or you can test one of the men at ftdna with family finder (autosomal) and do the Y-DNA test later using the same sample.
You don't say who you are in the family, but if you are a sister of the two brothers, your DNA will also be helpful. My suggestion is to start with the father and one of his children at Ancestry. If you all have the same mother (if she is deceased), you will be able to separate paternal and maternal matches. Then upload to the other sites. If you are interested in doing the Y-DNA test, one of the brothers should do the autosomal test first at ftdna so you can compare to the other uploaded kits. As I said, you can do the Y-DNA test later, but there should be no rush on that. If there are any maternal living relatives (aunts, uncles, or even cousins), you might want to consider asking them to test, also. It can get very expensive, complicated, and time consuming but also thrilling! Good luck! -- Cami Klein Researching maternal surnames:GOLDBERG, POLAK, SEGALOVICH, LISNIK (All from Minsk) and Paternal surnames: MEREMINSKY, WILKOFSKY, POSCIVE (from Peski and Ostrow)

Thank you Jeffrey and Alexander for your supporting statements.
As Jeffrey stated, I did NOT say that I personally believe that Jews did not make good soldiers. I used the word "generally" deliberately to encompass a variety of beliefs espoused at different times by Stalin, General Anders, and others in the military hierarchy and, as Jeffrey says, Russian soldiers. Neither does my statment obviate the achievements and casualties of Jewish soldiers. I was remarking on a generalised attitude which often resulted in Jews being sent into work battalions often in remote parts of the USSR. Mike - that your family has suffered great losses on the battlefields is extremely sad but bears no relationship to my statement about Soviet attitudes in the 1940s. The accusation of anti-Semitism in this context is not only inaccurate but hurtful. Rita Nash Sydney

Post-WWII Records for USA

My father's first cousin, Raymond Zussman, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his role in capturing a French town during WWII. (See https://www.cmohs.org/recipients/raymond-zussman ) He was a tank commander with the US Army and was killed in action, by friendly fire, a few days after his act of heroism.
This proved to be of great value many years later when I had business to conduct in the Pentagon. My Army handler led me on what appeared to be a wild goose chase through the vast building until we came to the display case where the names of the recipients are posted. I knew what I was looking for, found it quickly, and pointed it out to my handler. He asked me to wait while he made a phone call. That was the end of the BS from the Army; thereafter, they were very accommodating.
