This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page #general

Bruce Drake <BDrake@...>

"Grandma (Safta) Marisha" >from the Yizkor book of Kurzeniac (Kurenets),
Belarus is a story of poverty — a mother who had to wrap cloth around
her son’s feet because she could not afford boots for him — that evokes
the sadness, the struggle and feeling of shame that came along with
being poor. But this particular story is one with a happy ending thanks
to "the wonderful deeds and the heart full of pity" of the title
character, Safta Marisha.

Portuguese citizenship #sephardic

Jane Coelho

I am interested in hearing >from anyone who recently began the process
or successfully completed acquiring Portuguese citizenship.
I have extensive family genealogy records of my husband's family and
used to participate in this forum.
If possible, I would like to actually talk with anyone who might be
willing to give me his/her phone number.
I have read about the process and actually have a friend who is going
to Porto who could pick up any necessary form >from the Porto Jewish
Community because they don't seem to be available online to download.
Thanks, Jane Coelho

Searching: BLUMENKRANZ, Kovel #ukraine

Jay Nusholtz

I'm searching for information on my grandfather's family >from Kovel.
In 1921, emigrating >from Kovel to Philadelphia were:

Zalman (My Grandfather age 20)
Chaja (18)
Anna (12)
Fruma (Great Great Aunt 35)
Abraham (13)
Szmul (11)
Josef (9)

Other family members were documented by Zalman's Yahrzeit records:

Yahrzeit of Duddy

B"R Tzvi B"R Shima

20 in Shevat 5680 (1920)

Yahrzeit my grand father

R' Tzvi B"R Shimmy

3 of Hanukkah

Yahrzeit of my father R' Asher Jacob B"R Moshe Z"L

12th in Tamuz 5679

(1919)

Yahrzeit of my mother

_Malye_daughter of Tzvi

1st of Sukkot 5676

(1915)

Yahrzeit Dvora

daughter of Reuven

3rd of Tishrei 5676

(1915)

We know that Anna BLUMENKRANZ was an Aunt to Zalman and sisters. (Sol,
Helen and Anna BLUM) and that her husband, David SHULMAN was responsible
for the group's safe passage to the US.  We do not know whether Anna was
a sister of Asher Jacob (the father) or Malye (the mother). Fruma was a
BLUMENKRANZ by marriage to Duddy Tzvi, referred to as "Harry BLUM" in
Josef's Social Security application. Fruma and Malye may have been sisters.

We're also aware of a cousin named Henryk KIPER, which may be helpful.

Any information on the family would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

I appreciate help in translating >from (probably) Romanian of the comments
columns >from three marriage registrations >from Nepolocauti, Kotsmani region,
Bukowina, Romania. They are late legitimating of marriages >from about
1915-1918 that took place possibly in Wiznitz.
I understand that the comments have mainly administrative reference but I
still appreciate translation.

Conference Thursday in Warsaw #germany

Jeanette R Rosenberg OBE

Good morning >from Warsaw!

The week is rushing by and it's been tiring, with lots of wonderful
people to talk to and great lectures to hear.

I think breakfast may have been a bit quieter this morning, as a very
busy week means that people are sleeping in later, skipping breakfast,
or have gone out on tours.

Now it's Thursday and today there are two talks of GerSIG Interest:

Ekkehard Huebschmann il tell us about C.20th German records and Fritz
Neubauer will tell us about Lodz Ghetto Children.

If my emails have made you think you were missing out - you were! We
hope you will be able to join us in Cleveland next summer!

All good wishes

New GerSIG Website #germany

Alex Calzareth

The German-Jewish Special Interest Group (GerSIG) is excited to
announce that our new website is now available at
www.jewishgen.org/gersig . This website builds upon the excellent
work of the late Arthur Obermayer, one of our SIG's founding
co-directors.

The new website focus has a geographic focus meaning that resources
are organized by state/province, district and town. To get started
click on the name of the province/state on the left side of the home
page. You can also find a list of towns at
https://www.jewishgen.org/GerSIG/GEO_townlist.asp?start=634 . We are
still working to complete a comprehensive list of the thousand of
towns and cities within Germany that once had Jewish communities so
the website is very much a work in progress.

All information >from the old website has been transferred over and new
information has been added. An overview of the website's pages can be
found on our site map at https://www.jewishgen.org/GerSIG/sitemap.asp

We need your help to build up the resources on our new site. Please
consider filling out our resource survey at
https://goo.gl/forms/030uuvDYWWdtOnKt1 to provide information on
websites, books, archival resources and other publications for the
towns that you are researching. If you have more than a handful of
resources, please download the Excel template at
https://tinyurl.com/y8re73ks and send it back to me at
GerSIGweb@gmail.com. We also welcome any step-by-step instructional
guides or long-form articles.
