I wonder whether anyone will be visiting the above cemetery in the near
future and would be good enough to take a photo of a gravestone for me. I have the whereabouts of the grave which I will pass to whoever can assist me with this. Just email me. The stone might be that of my great-uncle. A photo would, hopefully, end a family mystery for me. Bit far for me to go there as I live in Australia. Myra Waddell. South Australia. Translation Polish - birth of Bine GINSBERG from Przemysl
#general
Tsiporah Trom
Please can someone have a look at the following entry in the birth index of
Przemysl: Entry 66: 1861, April 5: Bine Ginsberg, father Moses Ginsberg, mother Rachel At the link below: https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/56/1924/0/-/2/skan/full/eqZEu-Tpl4b5b82EMrQTBg There seems to be a lot of added scribbling in this line. Can someone decipher anything of importance ? A town name ? grandparents' names ? That would help me a lot in going further down, as Ginsberg is quite a common name. Best regards, Tsiporah Trom Antwerp, Belgium MODERATOR NOTE: Please respond privately via email.

Seeking Surname SHEER Birth record Year 1901, difficulty finding birth records for Philadelphia
#general
Beth Burnham
My grandfather Manuel Jacob SHEER was born 11/05/1901 in Philadelphia
PA and in 1901, there were only 2 synagogues which could have kept any records according to my searches on ancestry.com. There is no easy way to view the synagogue records. I've spent hours pouring through the 2 oldest synagogues Congregation Rodeph Shalom and Mikveh Israel Jewish Congregation. I am unaware of any other place where it could have been recorded. Birth records for PA did not go into effect until 1906, would it still possibly be recorded with the state that late? His older brother Robert Sheer was born in 1900 in Rhode Island according to the census records, and his parents were married the prior year in 1899 (Harry Israel Sheer to Sarah Muffs). I can not find their marriage records in the synagogues in Philadelphia, which is where their family was known to have immigrated >from Russia, the Sheers went back and forth >from Philly to New Haven CT and are buried in New York area. Any advise about how to obtain any birth records for my grandfather in 1901 is appreciated. I imagine I could check the synagogue in Rhode Island for a marriage record but that won't help me to find my grandfather's birth information. My mother thinks she remembers the name of a street where they lived in Philly and some stories about my great grandfather who left the family business to relocate to Connecticut due to an allergy to horse hair which was the nindustry that his relatives were in. Thank you!! Sincerely, Beth Zinderman Burnham

(Germany) German Lost Art Foundation and Mosse Art Research Institute Traced Nazi-Looted Art and Launched Online Database
#general
Jan Meisels Allen <janmeiselsallen@...>
Last year I posted about the German Lost Art Foundation which is a project of
the German government which began subsidizing private collectors attempts to return Nazi looted art to the families of the original owners. The government funding this at 3.4 million Euros, about $4 million USD. The fund helps the current generation of owners find out how the art objects came into their family. Under German law the descendants of the original Jewish owners must rely on the good will of the private collectors. Museums, however are bound by international principles which require them to reach "just and fair solutions." There are also statute of limitations that some current holders of stolen art rely upon to prevent return of the stolen Nazi-era artworks. Rudolf Mosse was one of the richest men in Berlin at the end of the 19th century and thousands of paintings, books, sculptures and antiques were seized >from him. The Mosse Art Research Initiative announced last year that heirs and the Lost Art Foundation funded 500,000 Euros to help trace the Nazi-looted art and return it to the rightful heirs. This is the first cooperative research project between the heirs of a Jewish collector looted by the Nazis and the German government. Thus far, they have traced eight works - one at Vienna's Belvedere Palace Museum, another at the Tel Aviv (Israel) Museum and Arkell Museum in Canahohaire, New York, and Gdansk Polish Museum - the later which has not yet been recovered. The Belvedere Palace Museum also housed the famous Klimt painting, of the story of the Woman in Gold fame (Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I). Berlin's State Museums have restituted nine works in their collections looted >from Mosse. Much of the looted art is also in private collections. Given Name Irsza

Judith Singer
The given name "Irsza" appears in the 1784 Grand Duchy of Lithuania
Poll Tax List for Kavarskas. I assume this, like other names on the List, is a Polish spelling. Can someone tell me please the Lithuanian version of this name? It is not on the JewishGen GIven Name Database for either Poland or Lithuania nor is it in Boris Feldblyum's book on Russian-Jewish given names. Thank you - Judith Singer

Lodz Registration Cards 1916-1921 Update - 110,000 Jewish Names
#general
Margalit Ashira Ir
Dear Researchers,
We are pleased to announce the addition of 25,000 Jewish names now available on the JRI-Poland website >from the Lodz Registration Cards 1916-1921. This brings the total of identified Jewish names and families to 110,000. I want to thank our dedicated volunteers for their continued passion and commitment to this program. And, of course, thanks to our technical guru Howard Fink for processing the data prior to uploading to the online JRI-Poland database. The Lodz Registration Card Project is a marathon and to date we are at 50% completion. There is so much more to do. We welcome additional volunteers to join our incredible group and help move our program forward to total completion. Contact Margalit.a.Ir@gmail.com with your interest to join this team. Our volunteer team is extracting the cards in alphabetical order. If you wish to prioritize the extraction of your family's name, a donation of $54 per name will result in a quick and dedicated spreadsheet for your use.
