Re: Belarus SIG Coordinator Stepping Down Immediately
#belarus
Larry Gaum <lgaum@...>
I would like to personally thank David for his devotion and dedication to
the Belarus SIG and the many, long, unpaid hours he gave to our organization. In several instances, when I had contact with him on a one-to-one basis, I found David to be kind, considerate, helpful and friendly. His bottom line was always the Belarus SIG and he took nothing for himself. I've never met David, but I have a great deal of respect for him and I want to wish him good health and good luck in his future endeavors. I hope he is only stepping down as coordinator and will still be one of our active members. Thank you David Dr. Larry Gaum

re research in Ukraine and Poland
#ukraine
Joanne Saltman <js24saltman@...>
The best way to get research data is to join a Shtetl group-a group of
people who are researching the same area. You can pool your resources and get information for a list of names for that area. The archivists from these areas have told us that many of these records are old and in poor condition-consequently they do not want to research them often. They would prefer we purchase large groups of records or have a list of names >from a particular area. If you don't see a special interest group for your town-start one-the JGFF can give you the names of others researching your area-and select several towns in the vicinity because not only did our ancestors move around a lot-but often they would be registered in one town and living in another. Or often the records for a group of towns would be in the largest town in the district. Joanne Saltman Volhynia coordinator

Dear Group ~
Before I proceed with my questions I want to take a moment to give a very warm thanks to all of you who have responded to my preious querys; the time you have spend to help with translations and make suggestions and provide guidance had been phenomenal; very hepful and incredible appreciated. In many cases you have been the reasons that my research has progressed and I am truly greatful. That being said I hope the following requests will be of a much easier caliber. 1)A Russian govt document >from the late 1800s was translated for me with the following information: Keletskoy Gubernia; Sipushey or Onpushsky uezed and city of Oipusha or Onpucha. The closest I could come was Opoczna in Kielce. Does that make sense or am I missing semething? 2)I have a postcard written by my ggg grandfather in which he signs it "son of the Gaon HaTzaddik SheHaya Av Beis Din Checiny" which means "son of the Chief Rabinic Judge of Checiny". Is anyone aware as to how I might be able to trace who this Chief Rabbi might be? He lived >from the late 1700s to sometime in the 1800s (dates unsure). I anyone familiar with a book called "Slownik Historii Kielckich Zydow" writtten by Krzysztof Urbanski and Rafal Blumenfeld? It has been suggested that I might find some answers in this book and I'm wondering if anyone might have it in his posession or have a suggestion as to where to locate it. 3) The matzva of this Rabbi's granddaughter reads: Leah bat shin shin R'Israel Icyk grandson of the genius Rabbi shin shin R'Shimon haTzaddek. Any suggestions as to the meaning of the "shin shins"? Thank you, as always for your time and help. Best regards, Linda Silverman Shefler linsilv@nc.rr.com

Thank you on Canton Ohio assistance

jan meisels allen <janmallen@...>
Several days ago I posted an inquiry regarding how to find out if Elias
Perlo who had lived in Canton Ohio had died there- any information about his life while living there--Within 24 hours 5 wonderful JewishGenners had offered help with the e-mails of the local resources, offering to obtain the death certificate - one of whom even knew where this person was buried- serendipitously having his cousin buried in the same area of the cemetery. Until this occurred we only had family lore that he in fact lived in Canton and did not know if he died there. This was so overwhelmingly generous for all who contacted me-- even though I have sent e-mails to those who contacted me I wanted everyone to know publicly how gracious and giving these JewishGenners are. Eastern LI Mental Institution
#general
Sam Schleman <Samara99@...>
Hello all;
I've got a problem that I hope someone can help me with. I am trying to obtain information about a woman who was institutionalized somewhere in the period of 1915 - 1920 on eastern Long Island. The name of the institution is unknown, but the person in question died while a patient (probably in the 1950's or 60's) and is buried in the Institution's own graveyard. Her name was Rose Klein nee Kramer, and she was born in 1891. We believe she suffered >from Post-partum depression after the birth of her second child, and her husband placed her in an institution shortly thereafter, where she remained the remainder of her life. It is presumed to be a mental institution. Since she had no SS #, is not in a known cemetery and there was no known next of kin involved, it is hard to find information about her. Would anyone know of a mental institution on eastern Long Island that would have existed in 1915 to 1920 and which has its own cemetery? Or can anyone tell me how to locate this information? Thank you for any help or insight you may be able to shed on this problem. Sam Schleman Malvern, PA Samara99@comcast.net

Military service in Russia?
#general
Elsebeth Paikin <jgsdk_ep@...>
Does anyone have a suggestion for where to find the rules
and regulations for the military service of Jews in Russia. We all hear about the 25 years .... but I know of one emigre who had served 7 years and were then free to settle whereever he wanted and also to travel out of the country.... I would like to know the years of the laws passed with regards to this topic. I have tried to find the information in Dubnow: "History of the Jews in Poland and Russia", but besides the first law in the 1820ies I can't find any mention of the later reduction of years of service. Can anyone help? Thanking you in advance Elsebeth Paikin, Copenhagen, Denmark Coordinator & webmaster of JewishGen's SCANDINAVIA SIG http://www.jewishgen.org/scandinavia mailto:elsebeth@paikin.dk
