Grabie? (town) #belarus

dayna reader <zoeys_mom@...>

my grandfather and his family came >from the town of
Olszany (now called Gol'shany or Holszany in Belarus),
near Vilnius. On the ship manifest, it says that his
father was born in the town of Grabie. i cannot find a
listing for this town, adn am wondering if anyone else
might know of a Grabie near Holsany.

Thank you (please reply privately)

I was sadly surprised to read David's stepping down letter. I think it
is a big loss for all of us. I join to all the
gratitudes, appraisements and salutes to David and dare to express weak
hope that the situation is reversible. If it is not I wish you ,
David, good health. success and prosperity.

Dave

I have never contacted you privately, but >from what i saw in the last days,
from the infromation you gave during the last years and >from the great work
you did, i learned that you wanted to help others only for your joy that you
make someone in the world a little more happy because he found one more link
in his tree.
Thanks you for that.

One of those buried in the old rabbinic section of the Hevron
cemetery (Reishit Hochma) is a Rav Chaim Katz, who is identified
there as "Baal 'Eretz Hayyim' and grandson of the samekh-mem-ayin."
My rashei teivot reference says that this is either "Maor Einayyim"
or "Meirat Einayyim" and Atlas Etz Hayyim has two of each of those.

Does anyone know who R' Chaim Katz' grandfather was and what was the
name of his sefer?

Genners:
I agree wholeheartedly with Joanne Saltman. Pooling information makes
nothing but good sense. Anyone out there who is focusing on Kirovograd
(Elisavetgrad) and Zvenigorodka? Both these towns are close to Kiev. I
have emailed the Kiev State Archives but so far no response.

Thanks for any help.

Belarus SIG Coordinator Stepping Down Immediately #belarus

I've only just joined the group and found it to be very well run. I want to
thank Dave and all the other people for all the work they have done to
create and maintain the list that so many of us get great pleasure and help
from, and just say that if there are over 1,700 members and only two have
caused strife, that is a fantastic tribute to how well the list has been
run.

Be proud of what you have accomplished!

The rest of us will have to see how we can contribute time, efforts and
ideas to help the new coordinator keep up the great work.

It might be a good idea to try to recover the good relations with the
archives that might have been damaged by the impatience of one person, by
frankly stating that their actions were individual and inacceptable to the
rest of the members because of the discord created.

Let's all be postive and hope that someone experienced and patient will take
over where Dave left off and as he himself stated, add new ideas.

best regards, Jenni Hymoff
