One of those buried in the old rabbinic section of the Hevron
cemetery (Reishit Hochma) is a Rav Chaim Katz, who is identified there as "Baal 'Eretz Hayyim' and grandson of the samekh-mem-ayin." My rashei teivot reference says that this is either "Maor Einayyim" or "Meirat Einayyim" and Atlas Etz Hayyim has two of each of those. Does anyone know who R' Chaim Katz' grandfather was and what was the name of his sefer? Israel Pickholtz

Genners:
I agree wholeheartedly with Joanne Saltman. Pooling information makes nothing but good sense. Anyone out there who is focusing on Kirovograd (Elisavetgrad) and Zvenigorodka? Both these towns are close to Kiev. I have emailed the Kiev State Archives but so far no response. Thanks for any help. Researching GRECHEVSKY/GRUSHEVSKIJ and GRINBERG in Kirovograd and Zvenigorodka. Belarus SIG Coordinator Stepping Down Immediately
#belarus
Jenni Hymoff Koeppel
I've only just joined the group and found it to be very well run. I want to
thank Dave and all the other people for all the work they have done to create and maintain the list that so many of us get great pleasure and help from, and just say that if there are over 1,700 members and only two have caused strife, that is a fantastic tribute to how well the list has been run. Be proud of what you have accomplished! The rest of us will have to see how we can contribute time, efforts and ideas to help the new coordinator keep up the great work. It might be a good idea to try to recover the good relations with the archives that might have been damaged by the impatience of one person, by frankly stating that their actions were individual and inacceptable to the rest of the members because of the discord created. Let's all be postive and hope that someone experienced and patient will take over where Dave left off and as he himself stated, add new ideas. best regards, Jenni Hymoff HYMOFF >from Lublin and Minsk, KADETSKY >from Poland, REDLER >from Novo Podolsk, Ukraine and KRAVETSKY >from Kamenets Litovsk, Ukraine.

ABD Checiny mid-1800s & Shin Shin on Matzevah
#rabbinic
Linda Shefler <linsilv@...>
Dear Group,
Before I proceed with my questions I want to take a moment to give a very warm thanks to all of you who have responded to my previous queries; the time you have spend to help with translations and make suggestions and provide guidance had been phenomenal; very hepful and incredibly appreciated. In many cases you have been the reasons that my research has progressed and I am truly greatful. That having been said I hope the following requests will be of a much easier caliber. 1) I have a postcard written by my ggg grandfather in which he signs it "son of the Gaon HaTzaddik SheHaya Av Beis Din Checiny" which means "son of the Chief Rabinic Judge of Checiny." Is anyone aware as to how I might be able to trace who this Chief Rabbi might be? He lived >from the late 1700s to sometime in the 1800s (dates unsure). 2) Is anyone familiar with a book called "Slownik Historii Kielckich Zydow" writtten by Krzysztof Urbanski and Rafal Blumenfeld? It has been suggested that I might find some answers in this book and I'm wondering if anyone might have it in his posession or have a suggestion as to where to locate it. 3) The matzva of this rabbi's granddaughter reads: Leah bat *shin shin* R' Israel Icyk grandson of the genius Rabbi *shin shin* R' Shimon haTzaddek. Any suggestions as to the meaning of *shin shins*? Thank you, as always for your time and help. Best regards, Linda Silverman Shefler mailto:linsilv@nc.rr.com

Hi all, I am seeking information about Hershel REICH (birth and death unknown) and his daughter Rachel REICH (b. 1851-1874 est.) >from Rzeszow, Poland, my great-great-grandfather and great-grandmother. I imagine they were killed in the Holocaust. Rachel had another sister, Beila. I am descendent >from the Rachel REICH line. She married Shmuel Aharon BODNER (b. 1842-1871 est.) I have just started researching my ancestor's line for my Uncle Seymour BODNER. He wanted more information on his great-grandfather, Hershel REICH who had a daughter Rachel REICH (my great-grandmother), and possible son Nathan REICH from Rzeszow, Poland. Rachel married Shmuel (Samuel) Aharon BODNER and had 8children, among them, my grandfather, Jacob BODNER. Seymour BODNER is Jacob's son. Stella BODNER Seiden is Jacob's daughter and my mother. If you have any information, please respond to me. Thanks, Barbara Seiden sunrisepro@aol.com
