FW: Gdansk/Danzig question
#general
Terri <terrib@...>
Hello, I have a relative who died in Danzig/Gdansk around 1926-1935.
Can someone tell me if Danzig/Gdansk records for 1926-1935 would be located with Polish records, Ukrainian records, German records, etc. Thanks, Tom Erribe

Tombstone transliteration - "resh"?
#general
Laura Ma'oz <pedocare@...>
In transliterating the following name on a tombstone, what is the
relationship of Ephraim to Mordechai: Mordechai rav Ephraim ben rav Yaakov. The tombstone is very clear - there is no "bet" before the "resh" between Mordechai and Ephraim. I already checked the infofiles and discussion group archives. Thanks for any assistance. This is for the JOWBR project.

Huehnerauge has a medical meaning: clavus, therefore the meaning is someone
who is specialiced in excision of clavus, not necessarily a medical doctor, having no own office, performing this kind of surgery at the home of his patients or in a tent in an amusement park. Hans Jantsch Vienna Researching RATZERSDORFER (Vienna, Bratislava, Horice and anywhere else), DOCTOR (von HOHENLANGEN), ZWEIG. MODERATOR NOTE: We received numerous responses about Huhneraugenarzt. Since we know that clavus = corn or callus, this message seems to complete the occupation description. No other responses will be posted unless they add significantly to the discussion.

Identification of GGM's Birthplace
#belarus
Paul A. Auerbach
Genners,
I'm having trouble identifying the birthplace of my great grandmother, and was hoping one of you might be able to help me. The only thing I'm fairly certain of is that my GGM was born somewhere in Belarus between 1894 and 1897. According to her Ellis Island passenger record, she was born in Kownati, Witebsk Gubernia, Russia. I've searched JewishGen's Shtetl Seeker and other sources extensively, but couldn't find any towns that sound like "Kownati" in the Witebsk (Vitebsk) Gubernia. I did, however, find several towns named "Kownaty" in Poland, at least two of which were near Belarus (but nowhere near the Vitebsk Gubernia). The Ellis Island passenger lists for my GGM's parents and siblings refer to towns named "Kovnat," "Kownat" or "Kawnot," also in the Witebsk Gubernia. The 1930 U.S. federal census shows the birthplace of my GGM and her parents, but I'm unable to make it out (it's clearly something other than "Kownati"). I've posted an extract from that census record on ViewMate in the hope that someone might be able to recognize the town name: http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5668 My GGM's application for a U.S. Social Security number says she was born in Latvia. Finally, my father thinks my GGM was born in Pinsk, Belarus. Any thoughts or suggestions? Please reply directly to me at PAuerbach@yahoo.com. Thanks very much for your help. Prostejov Shoah victims online
#austria-czech
Joseph Lonstein
Hi all,
The list of Jewish Shoah victims >from Prostejov (Prossnitz), CZR is now online on JewishGen's Holocaust Database. I transcribed the names >from photos I took last summer of the memorial plaques in the Jewish cemetery there, and later received some transcription assistance >from Maud Beer (thanks again, Maud). Unfortuantely, I don't see a way on the website for one to view the entire list, but you can enter specific surnames on the main Database webpage. Even typing "Prostejov" as a town or Global Text search does NOT result in this part of the larger JG Holocaust Database appearing. There was little information on the plaques - names but no birthdates. I believe that most of them were deported >from Olomouc, and I suppose one could verify birthdates >from the Terezin deportation lists book (Terezinska Pametni Kniha). http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Holocaust/0118_prostejov.html Joe Lonstein East Lansing, MI Searching: GRUNHUT, KOCH - Prostejov, CZR (among others)

I.O.F.S. of I. Progress Lodge in 1880 St. Louis
#usa
When I was in St. Louis a few weeks ago, I started reading the earliest St.
Louis Jewish newspapers on microfilm in the St. Louis County Library. The first thing of interest I found was in a column of short items concerning local people in the Jewish Tribune of Jan. 16, 1880. It noted that L. Kober (Louis KOBER) was the newly installed treasurer of the I.O.F.S. of I. Progress Lodge. I assume that this was either a Jewish fraternal group or a labor union, but does anyone know what the full name and purpose of this organization was? To all Yankee Doodle Jewish Genners,
How many of you are going to the IAJGS conference in Las Vegas next July? It would be nice to meet you face to face. I have reserved a room for a "Birds of a Feather" meeting for the Early American Sig on Tuesday at 12 noon. In Washington 2 years ago we had about 30 people who attended the meeting. Marvin Weinberg Coordinator, Early American Sig P. S. If you have any suggestions for topics or projects that you would like to discuss, please let me know by E mail, either through the Sig or directly to me. Or just send a note that you'll be there.
