GIMMELMAN or APPLEBAUM of Zinkov #general

Linda Shefler <linsilv@...>

Dear Fellow Genners,

Another family mystery :>) My *Silverman* family is >from Zinkov, Ukraine.
They settled in Providence, RI in 1887.
Silverman is not the original family name. The two names that I have been
given as the *real* name are APPLEBAUM and GIMMELMAN.
I haven't found anyone in JGFF researching either name >from Zinkov or
elsewhere in Podolsky.
The spelling of the names can vary; APFLEBAUM, HIMMELMAN, etc.
The furthest back I've been able to research is Mordechai bar Ze'ev Wolf.
Mordechai was born about 1851, supposedly in Zinkov.

Has anyone researching Zinkov (or Podolsky) come across either family name
(with any variation of spelling)?

Any information, suggestions or input is, as always, greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance and please respond privately.

SNOPARSKY/SHNAPARSKI of Montreal #general

Linda Shefler <linsilv@...>

Dear Fellow Genners,

I am still working on my elusive Snoparsky family >from Pavoloch, Kiev,
Ukraine and have just come upon some new information.
I learned that my g grandfather Abraham (Avrum Iankelevich) SCHNAPARSKI (son
of Yaakov) had a brother who lived in Montreal.
I assume the brother was there at least >from 1908 as that is when Abraham
immigrated via Montreal to Fall River, MA.
My grandfather visited his uncle in Montreal into the 1920s. I don't know
if communication between the families stopped then, but the visits did.
In the St. Albans listings I found a Borich SCHNAPORSKI (born about 1906 in
Pavoloch) who came >from Canada to visit someone in Detroit in 1925.
I also know of another Boruch SNOPARSKY (aka SILMOPARSKI) born in Pavoloch
in 1890.

Is anyone aware of a SCHNAPORSKI/SCHNAPARSKIJ/SNOPARSKY/SILMOPARSKI family
of Montreal? Of anywhere?
Where is it possible to view ship's records into Montreal for 1908?

Any input would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks and please respond privately.

It was interesting to read about the information now available about the
Sunderland Jewish Community.
I wish the same could be done for the Manchester Jewish Community, or
maybe it has been and I haven't found it.

Bert, I think you'll find that Krustapils was in Latgale and not in
Courland.

Sephardim in Belarus #belarus

Jacqueline <cochavim@...>

My grandmother's name, before she married, was Fanny GELMAN and she was born
in Motele in about 1887 and left in 1902. I received a photo of her as a
young woman and my husband's first reaction was: She looks as if she came
from Uzbekistan. I agree, although she spoke Yiddish, and when I knew her I
always thought she looked like Ashkenazi. I believe that Sephardi Jews, when
they settled in Europe took Ashkenazi surnames. When did this happen and is
it possible to trace the family that far back? I know very few details about
her parents.

early Norwich marriage #unitedkingdom

Peter Glass <monad1@...>

Following a branch of the legal dynasty ISAAC/SYDNEY family, I found an
1838 Norwich marriage where the civil certificate reads 'according to rites
of the Jews'.

The marriage is of attorney Sydney Isaac SYDNEY of London to widow Hannah
WISEMAN daughter of Abraham LYONS >from Birmingham. She was a shopkeeper,
perhaps the late husband's business which may have been a hardware store.

Sydney was about 30 and Hannah 25.
A Joseph Wiseman died earlier in 1838 in Norwich who might be the husband
but I haven't risked getting the certificate as Wiseman is not an uncommon
English name.

If anyone knows this Lyons family of Birmingham or a Wiseman of Norwich in
this period and of course my Sydney family at any time then I would
interested to hear more.

Clearly there was no synagogue in Norwich in 1838 so the Jewish marriage
was interesting; the image is faint but the marriage appears to have been
performed at home by S. Aaron, Sec'y and witnessed by Simon Collins and
Joel Fox. Asking Anthony Joseph this afternoon, he thought they were Great
Synagogue officials who travelled up to Norwich but the Isaacs/Sydney
family were machas with the New Synagogue - (is this in that maddening gap
in NS marriage records?).
If I got the names right, does anyone recognise these as synagogue officials?
