My name is Kathryn Berman and I live in Jerusalem, Israel.

I am currently researching friendships formed between British non-Jewish
and Jewish soldiers serving in the British Army in Palestine up to the
formation of the State of Israel in 1948, and Jewish girls living in
Palestine. (including the Jewish Brigade)

I particular wish to follow up any marriages that resulted and trace
subsequent children and grandchildren >from these marriages. If any of
the soldiers are still alive, I would like to have contact with them
also.

Please e-mail me at

I have thanked the major contributors personally, but I
also wanted to express my great gratitude to everyone who
helped translate (and explain) the three handwritten pages
of Hebrew that I posted last week at ViewMate. I've not
only learned a lot about my family's history, but also
been initiated into matters (such as the gematria, the
misnagdim and Beit Shamai) about which I knew little or
nothing!

We are truly fortunate to have such a resource as ViewMate
-and the wonderful worldwide community of men and women
who give of their knowledge and time so generously to help
total strangers.

Bistritas #romania

Sam Schleman <Samara99@...>

Hello all;

The spouse of a relative just asked me for some help finding out about his
father's family. He said they were >from the town of Bistritas, but I don't
find any such town in Shtetl Seeker and Google only turned up one hit. I am
not familiar with Romania, not having ancestors >from there.

Is anyone familiar with this town? Is this the correct name? Could you
provide me with any information about this town, i. e, other names, approx.
population, general location?

Thanks for the help.

Accessing City Directories for old addresses #general

Merle Kastner <merlek@...>

Dear Genners,

Quite often, there are posts asking for ways to do lookups
for old US addresses. This is by far the best resource.
[for doing reverse lookups, there is nothing like the old
censuses for information]:

City Directories:
You can obtain some great help, by going into:
http://userdb.rootsweb.com/citydir/ - there is
no charge for subscription and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Then, post a message on: CITY-DIRECTORIES-L@rootsweb.com
and ask for the help you need - put the name of the city in cap's, at the
beginning of your subject line, and then outline the rest of the subject -
such as: "NEW YORK CITY - GOLDBERG - 1960's lookup request"

Make your subject heading clear & concise, to get more responses.
Put city, year/s you want & surname. Many people won't open messages
that don't state what the sender is looking for.
This is all run by private volunteers.

You are probably searching for town Iwonicz (powiat Krosno) in south eastern
part of Poland, in the Beskid (Carpathian) Mountains region.

Close by there is also Iwonicz Zdroj, popular spa resort known >from its

Re: 1880 Census Index and image #general

Judith Lipmanson <lipmanson@...>

Ancestry.com will let you find a person via its index, online, for free.
It will not let you see the Census page image without a subscription.
You can see the image without cost, however, at the LDS Family History
Centers. Also, if you are in or near Washington, DC you can find the
microfilm images without cost at the National Archives. I assume that
the regional Archive branches have a similar capability.

Other options are http://www.familysearch.org , or your local library.
Some libraries have access onsite to Census Images; others let you
access them >from home, without cost.

I believe that you can access that 1880 index at the LDS website as well. It
has always been free. You will be able to see all of the neighbors as well
as the individual you are searching. There are no images available to view
just the index. The website is http://www.familysearch.org

Suwalki-Lomza BOF meeting scheduled during Las Vegas Conference #poland

Lillian Faffer

The Suwalki Lomza Birds of a Feather meeting has been scheduled on Tuesday
July 12th in Las Vegas during the 25th Annual International Conference on
Jewish Genealogy. Researchers are welcome to bring lunch with them to
this meeting which will be held during the lunch break.

The meeting will cover

1.an update on recently completed indexing projects as well as projects
in progress for these areas by JRI-Poland and other groups of which we
are aware.

2. self introductions by each attendee by name with a brief statement of
the towns and families they are researching

3. sharing of research successes and problems as time permits.

I would appreciate hearing >from those researchers who are planning on
attending this meeting so that the conference assignment committee can
reserve a room of the appropriate size for our meeting.

We are fortunate that a crunch for space at the conference has given us
this opportunity to have an extended period for our meeting and wish to
acknowledge the cooperation of the conference chairwomen responsible for
scheduling BOF meetings and calendar for helping to make this meeting
possible.

I noticed on a recent trip to Prague that a lot of the old buildings,
including homes businesses & even a Shul, still have their old address
in this style on the front. If any members of this Discussion Group

For Warsaw, the SIG team have actually put the equivalent address
