Did Bessarabian Jews Serve in Romanian Army? #romania

Suzy Lampert <suzylampert@...>

Some of my relatives, years ago, found a photograph of my grandfather's
half-brother dressed in an Army uniform. This was just before or during WW
II. Since he lived in Bessarabia, Romania, it was assumed that he served in
the Romanian Army. However, I was later told that this would have been
impossible, since he was Jewish.

Did Bessarabian Jews actually serve in the Romanian Army before or during WW
II? If not, which would be the likely country he served in? Is there any
way to follow this up through Army records?

Thank you.

Which archive is Mine? - Need your input #poland

Bev Potter <basha@...>

In an attempt to get myself on track in the search for my father's
ancestors, I askyou to consider the following "clues":

1. My paternal surname was PADERESKY/Paderefsky/Podorosky - the spelling
variations that I have found on the US records are endless.

2. The Shtetl of PODOROSK is located at 5259 2437. This is some 61 miles
east ofBialystok.

3. My grandfather, Morris, was born in HORODOK, according to his
naturalizationpapers. I do not know which shtetl Horodok this was. I
believe that there was (or is)a shtetl Horodok east of Bialystok. Morris
was born in 1885.

4. The ship manifest for Morris and his mother Sarah state their last
residence as Warchau. I don't know if they actually lived there or if
they stayed there on the way
to Hamburg.

5. I do not know where my great-grandfather Nathan was born. As of yet,
I have beenunable to locate Naturalization papers for him. US census
records give conflictinginformation - yes he did naturalize or no, he
did not. Nathan was born approximately 1862.

6. Gathering records >from the Ellis Island database for other people
of the Paderefsky name (I have no clear basis for believing that they
are related OR that they are not), most of these people come >from the
following towns: Chomsk, Antopol, Pruzany, Simonivichi. These towns are
all in the area south and east of Bialystok. Also south and east of
Podorosk.

My questions:

a) Given the above data, is it reasonable to focus my search on this area
south and east of Bialystok?

b) Assuming my family came >from this area, What archive should be the
focus of my search? I would like to initiate a search for birth, marriage
and death records.

c) Is there a SIG whose research effort encompasses this area for the
timeframe of
1850- 1900?

Thank you in advance,

Myra & Peter Waddell <pmwaddell@...>

Dear Genners,
I have posted on the ViewMate site
http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=5368 -a wedding photo
taken in England - probably in Liverpool about 1912.
I know the clothes look as though they belong to an earlier time but I also know
that the youngest man standing at the back (just behind the groom) was 3 years old
in the 1901 census. To my mind he only looks about 14 in the photo. My
g.grandparents, Leah and Chaim GOLDENBERG, are sitting on the chairs, with their
children behind. Left to right - my grandmother-Rochelle, Jack, groom-Harry
(surname unknown), bride-Rebecca(Beckie), Henry and Leon - all GOLDENBERGs, except
the groom! Is this anyone else's family as well? Does anyone else have a copy of
this photo in their family album?
Please reply direct to me at pmwaddell@austarmetro.com.au Thanks.
