Hi Rose,

Thanks for your input.  It would be very helpful if you provide directions on how to access these pdf files.  I am fluent in Hebrew but could not find these as it is not clear what to search for and where.

Best regards,

Re: What was the purpose of this document issued in Czarist Russia? -Pervia Gilda#russia #general

Sheryl,
Pervaya is a feminine form of "first".  Just like in English, "one" and "first" are different words.  As far as I know, the only qualifier for joining the merchant class was showing capital.  There were plenty of Jews, that were merchants, in many cases outnumbering gentiles within towns in the Pale.

Jorge,
You are correct, it refers to merchant class and would be used in a form of "1st class merchant", "daughter of 2nd class merchant", "brother of 3rd class merchant", "grandson of 1st class merchant" as an official title.  3rd class merchant class existed until 1860's.  The title was held while one was able to show certain level of capital, otherwise you revert either to a lower guild or to your previous social state, for example to meshchanin (city dweller).
The rules regarding unlimited travel, rights, etc varied over the years.  At some point a Jewish merchant had a right of unlimited travel, at other times the law changed and they could no longer stay outside of the Pale of Settlement for longer than 6 months, even if they owned a property in a city in one of the internal provinces.

Chorzele, Poland questions; ~1931 picture of Mendel Katz and family #poland

Sondra Korman <smkcns33@...>

Looking for information re: Mendel Katz, my grandmother’s brother and the burial grounds in Chorzele.   I have an undated letter written in Yiddish from  Mendel to my grandmother Rose (Reizel).  She emigrated from Chorzele to the U.S. via Ellis Is. in 1912.  The letter is on the back of a picture depicting Mendel and his family at the unveiling of the  tombstone of Gedaliah Reuvan (son of Mordechai Yitzchak).  I had both the letter and tombstone translated and it appears that the picture was taken in the Spring of 1931, a year after Reuvan’s death on March 1, 1930.
Question:
—The Yitzkor Book Necrology Database lists both Leib Katz and Mendel Katz from Chorzele.    What does this mean?   (My grandmother’s older brother Leib lived in NY.)
—Does anyone know whether the Chorzele cemetery still exists?
—In the future, I am interested in visiting Chorzele—any recommendations for tour guides?
Thank you,
Sondra Korman

Looking for Schurs from Mobile, Alabama #usa #general

averybuie1@...

I'm looking to see if anyone knows anything about Schurs who lived in Mobile, Alabama in the early 1900s. My 2nd great grandmother and her sister were Schurs and lived in Mobile, and we've heard from family lore that originally they had a brother who lived in this area, which is why they eventually settled there as well.

Unfortunately there are a lot of holes. We don't know his first name, or if he kept the name Schur. We think he moved to Utah and had no further contact with the family. As far as we know the family was originally from the Ekaterinoslav Gubernia in Ukraine in what was then the Russian Empire.

This is really like searching for a needle in a haystack, but I want to research every possible lead I can. If anyone has any information please let me know!

Thank you!

David -

Just go to the NYC Department of Health, Vital Records webpage and follow the instructions carefully.  I can't emphasize enough how important it is to follow their instructions because they will reject your request for the slightest deviation. Two years ago I was unable to get a birth or death certificate for my two uncles because the city's idiotic rules said one had to be in a direct family line.  They had since eased that restriction and I was able to get the certificates I needed.

I want to thank everyone again who either replied here or personally to me. I have been corresponding with Dr. Mohr now for the last few days. The suggestions about what the title of the book means in English are all correct.

In this area (link to google maps area south of Kiev)

I'm familiar with this merchant class in the Russian Empire, although I've not seen one of these passports. My ggf was a member of what our family called the "first glitzy," and it was rare for Jews to have this status. Yosef Shindelman owned multiple factories and conducted international business in the leather trade circa late 1890s -1917, including being a supplier of boots to the government for the Russo-Japanese War. His wealth was stripped by the Soviets in the 1920s and early 1930s.

Stojanci or Stoyantsi.  Along with about 6 variants, per JewishGen Town Finder.  3 towns of that name, in Russia, Ukraine, and Croatia.

I had my grandfather's 1911 Russian passport translated by the Russian manicurists at a local shop. (They were so excited to help!) Turns out it was in "old Russian" but they had no trouble.

It's much better to upload such images to JewishGen's ViewMate. ViewMate - To Upload (jewishgen.org)

The image you posted is upside-down - ViewMate has tools for turning images whichever way is necessary.  It also lets people see the suggested translations - and suggest alternatives during a whole week.

David,

The record must be ordered, and you have to demonstrate a familial relation in order to do so. The direct-line relationship must be within that of a great-grandparent; requests for cousins, aunts and uncles will not be fulfilled.

Best of luck in your search,

If I'm not wrong, it means that the person was a "first class' merchant". Gilda would mean "guild", refering to the Merchant Guild.  See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchant_guild_(Russian_Empire)

I face a similar conundrum. The records from 1949 should have been microfilmed and available to the public, before Covid and before the new privacy regulations. I do not know the reason this was not done. At this stage these records from 1949 are awaiting to be micofilmed somewhere. I do not think it would be possible to order a copy.
