Re: Hyman Sacks death record, Manchester, England #records #unitedkingdom

LAURENCE HARRIS

The attached death notice published in the Jewish Chronicle newspaper (UK), Page 2 on 1 4 April 1916, might relate to the Hyman SACKS you are seeking?

Also, further to the useful advice given by Michael Tobias, unless you need an official death certificate on paper, you should order the digital PDF version which is both quicker and cheaper, and has the same image of the death entry in the GRO register that you would find on the paper certificate (so the PDF perfectly OK for genealogy research but not useful as a legal document).

I have 3 other handwritten inscriptions I found in my gr grandfather's prayer book from 1857.   There are three attached photos. In one the inscription is obvious. In another other photo there are some faint sepia ink letters handwritten over red printed hebrew letters...may be impossible to read. In the third is a child's pencil writing in hebrew. Thank you.

Re: Question about a matzeva: is Samuel mis-spelled or is a Yiddish alternative used? #names

Dick Plotz

Lots of Jewish men ended up being called "Sam" when they came to
America, whatever their original Hebrew or Yiddish name was. "Sam" was
an easy name for anyone to spell and pronounce and remember, so it was
convenient. This process has been called "Samification", It makes
genealogy harder to do.

Even after its merger with MyDNA, FTDNA continues to show me as 100% Sephardic. Have the ethnicity percentages for anyone been significantly impacted by the merger, and in what way?

-"Mazkeret legedoley Ostraha" by Menachem Mendel Biber, #rabbinic

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Menachem Mendel Biber's book "Mazkeret Legedoley Ostraha" mentions two
Rav Yisrael of Ostraha, which he presumes they are one and the same.
As I am a descendant of one of these Yisraels , I would like to share
information with others what I have on our tree.

My greatgrandfather's granfather, Yisrael, (ROSENBAUM but Biber
doesn't mention the family name) was a follower of Yehoshua Heschel of
Apta and came to Zfat and or Tveria during the first half of the 19th
cent. Some of his descendants changed their family name to SCHECHTER
as to their profession in Europe.

Something else to keep in mind: there are also Katzenellenbogen descendants who abbreviated their toponymic surname (derived from the County of Katzenelnbogen) to Katz, meaning that not all Katzes are Cohens.

sephardic genoma and Familytreedna #dna #sephardic

luciana gandelman

Dear Genners,
Does anyone know what happened with the merging of FamilyTreeDNA and MyDNA? It has changed my autosomal DNA analysis. It has substituted my sephardic (and part of my Italian also) percentages for Greek/Balkans. Did it happen to anyone else? Does it mean Familytreedna inicial analysis was wrong? The previous analysis made much more sense with my family history...

thank you in advance
