We are late... The Jewish cemetery in Reni burned #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

Hi everybody,

According to our plans for the Cemetery photographing and indexing projects,
we had to go this year to Jewish cemetery of Reni, Odessa oblast, formerly
in Bessarabia.  The town is located on Danube river, in a corner of Ukraine,
Moldova and Romania.

But I got information today that on September 1,  there was fire at the
cemetery, and as it says in the article,  the Jewish cemetery burned.  It is
not clear how much damage was to the tombstones.  Here is an article in
Russian, but you can use Google Chrome or other browser to translate the
site:
http://reni-odessa.od.ua/v-reni-sgorelo-evrejskoe-kladbishhe.html

I am sending our photographer to Reni as soon as possible.

Will keep you updated.

Searching: HOCHFELDER, Vysoka Hungary/Czech Republic #general

Brandon Skylar <b.zongora@...>

Hi All,

I need to find information and paperwork on my great-grandmother, Karolina
Hochfelder who was born in Vysoka, Hungary (now Czech Republic) on October
4, 1894 or 1895. Married name is Caroline Zongora.

I’ve found her on jewishgen with a link to her arrival records in Ellis Island:

Departure: Bremen
Arrival: New York - October 9th, 1910
Ship Name: George Washington

What I really need is her birth certificate, but I’m not sure which country to
approach or how to request the documentation. Any help with direction to
resources would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Brandon Zongora

Helen Epstein

On September 4, I received this email >from Berlin:

"Dear Helen,

A close friend of mine in Prague just read the Czech translation of
your book "Where She Came From" in which over two pages you mention
your mother Franci in a cell at Pankrac prison in Prague. There she has
a discourse with Marianne, my father's first wife. As your description
appears to be based on some kind of facts that you have I would really
be interested to learn the source.

I was born in Britain in 1947 as the son of my father's second wife,
Ida who he could only marry after receiving the documents of
Marianne's death in 1943.
I look forward to hearing >from you.

Kind regards
Ronnie Golz"

In June of 1939, my mother was arrested by the Gestapo along with her
parents and housed in a cell in Pankrac prison in Prague with Marianne
Golz. Marianne taught her the ropes of prison life and advised her to
try to flee Czechoslovakia if she could.

Hans Golz was an Austrian Jewish journalist who moved to Berlin,
worked with Willy Haas, moved to Prague, then managed to get to
England and eventually made his home in West Berlin where Ronnie grew
up.

If anyone knows anything about this please email me.

-- Thanks,

Helen

P.S. I'm launching my last book in Czech translation (O Cem se
nemluvi) at the American Center in Prague Setember 27 at 7 pm. If
you're there, please come say hello!

Traude Triebel rightly reminds me that this has been discussed on our
SIG in the past. I am searching the SIG archives, and will write a
summary soon.

Re: Getting scans #poland

The microfilm number is probably a reference to the LDS microfilm.
The old procedure used to be that you went to your local LDS church's
family history center and had them order the actual microfilm, which
was mailed to them, and you could view it on their machine. This
required you to go there and pay the postage, and it took a long time.

The new procedure is:
1) You go to familysearch dot org and see if it has been scanned yet.
2) If it has been scanned, you can view it online.
3) If it has not been scanned, then you fill out a request online for
someone in Utah to scan it for you. The scanning is a manual process,
and may take some time.

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere and I just can't find it, but
there is data that I'd like to get more information on. For example,
my great-grandmother is on the Plonsk PSA Births list as DACH Ruchia
Laia. It shows the year of her birth but nothing else, other than an
Akta value of 27. Is there more information that just hasn't made it
into the database yet? If so, how can I get that? Similarly, her
father's name is Aron DACH and he shows up in a similar report with a
whole lot of data fields filled in, but not necessarily enough for me
to be sure the one in the report is the one I'm looking for. There is
a reference to a Microfilm number. How can I get a copy of what is on
that microfilm?

Randall Souviney <rsouviney@...>

My wife and I are about to arrive in Lithuania on Wednesday and plan to
visit the village of Punia where my great grandparents Nathan and Leah
(Baron) Shuster were from. They immigrated to the USA in about 1881 with
their two children, Hyman and Julia Cecila. My grandmother Bessie (b.
1893) was born in Rhode Island, USA. I am interested in any advice you
may have about an institution or office I might visit in Vilnius to talk
about any family records that may be available to view. I am also
curious if there was a Yizkor book project underway that includes the
Punia community.

Thank you for your help
