Steve, Friedrichstadt is today called Jaunjelgava. It is about 42-43
km south west >from Riga. If you get the SIG Latvia Bulletin, you
should find an article >from last year that includes the restrictions
and permissions for Jews in Riga.

Ketubah says Moshe Yehuda, Austrian birth document has as Moshe Leib. Can
anyone explain the name discrepancy?

Preservation of Documents, Photos and Films

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay will meet on Sunday October
17th at 2:00 P.M. at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd.,
Clearwater, Florida.

Gregg Hickman, owner of Lake Shore Camera Exchange, Inc in Palm Harbor will
make a presentation on the care and preservation of old photos and
documents. He will demonstrate how to take old films and turn them into
modern media.

The Jewish Genealogical Society's library and research resources, including
both printed materials and Internet access, along with guided assistance and
information exchange >from experienced researchers will be available to
participants at the meeting. Our library is growing and is quickly becoming
one of the most important reasons to come to the meetings. Many of the
items in the library are impossible to find in the local libraries, and if
they are reference only elsewhere, they can not be gotten through
inter-library

Anyone interested in learning how to do their own Jewish genealogical
research is invited to attend. Beginners as well as experienced researchers
are welcome. For further information on the Jewish Genealogical Society of
Tampa Bay or directions to the meeting call Mark Baron at 727-842-5789 or
Sally Israel at 727-343-1652.

interested in Uzpaliai as well, will be visiting Cape Town and Johannesburg.
If you interested in these Lithunian shtetls and would like to attend a
group get-together in either Cape Town or Johannesburg, please let me know.

Linda is also involved as the Web Master for the Ukrainian shtetls of
Bukaczowce and Poninka and would be happy to meet with descendants of these
shtetls as well.

attorney there in the 1950's. He would be in his late seventies to-day.

Here is a longish query, covering three continents!

Jakob SELIGMANN (1846-1900) of Ichenhausen lived in
Rouxville South Africa, having arrived there before
about 1875. He married Hendrina HENDRIKS, South
African born, who for some period of her life lived in
Graaf Reinet. They had four children in South Africa
and in 1880 the whole family left to live in
Springfield, Illinois, USA, where they were known as
the SELIGMAN family. I do not know why they left S.
Africa, but happened to find the following reference
in the catalogue of the National Archives of South
Africa:

to my relative Jacob SELIGMAN(N), described above.
However I would be very grateful if anyone living in
South Africa who visits the archives could take a
look at this record for me.

1. I would like to know why Jacob Seligmann was being
sought for arrest, and whether there is any
information, which might help to identify the
Seligmann in the archival material. Other useful
information would include any clue contained in the
archive as to where exactly the authorities believed
Jacob Seligmann to be living at that time.

2. Rouxville is and was in 1870-80 in the Orange Free
State, whose capital was (is?) Bloemfontein. One
descendant of Jacob SELIGMAN(N) has suggested to me
that his ancestor may have left Rouxville as a result
of tensions (? fighting ?) between the Boers and the
English in the time around 1880? Could this have been
a possible explanation for Jacob's departure? Was
there much fighting around Rouxville in 1879-80?

There was a SA writer Molly Nochomowitz who wrote "The Winged Fledgeling" in
1967 and other stories. She had a sister Gerty Nochomowitz Futeran who died
in 1943.

I have no further information on this family.

in Ezeres married Haja Chaya LEVINSON/S born 28 Aug
