interested in Uzpaliai as well, will be visiting Cape Town and Johannesburg.
If you interested in these Lithunian shtetls and would like to attend a
group get-together in either Cape Town or Johannesburg, please let me know.

Linda is also involved as the Web Master for the Ukrainian shtetls of
Bukaczowce and Poninka and would be happy to meet with descendants of these

My grandfather was Nathan Nochomowitz. On his headstone his hebrew name
is recorded as Ben Mayer Yehuda.

I have just discovered a database record of Elias ben Mayer Yehuda who
died in Boksburg in 1946. The similarity is unlikely to be coincidence
and while we know that there were Nochomowitz relations in South Africa,
we do not know anything about them. I do recall Big Isaac and Strong
Isaac being referred to.

My grandfather changed his name >from Nochomowitz to Nathan, becoming
Nathan Nathan. He was a very insular man, having lost his wife at an
early age and had very little to do with family.

I would like to hear >from anyone researching the Nochomowitz name who
knows of, or descendants of, Elias ben Mayer Yehuda (Nochomowitz).

Thanks

SELIGMAN(N): from ICHENHAUSEN to ROUXVILLE, then USA #southafrica

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>

Here is a longish query, covering three continents!

Jakob SELIGMANN (1846-1900) of Ichenhausen lived in
Rouxville South Africa, having arrived there before
about 1875. He married Hendrina HENDRIKS, South
African born, who for some period of her life lived in
Graaf Reinet. They had four children in South Africa
and in 1880 the whole family left to live in
Springfield, Illinois, USA, where they were known as
the SELIGMAN family. I do not know why they left S.
Africa, but happened to find the following reference
in the catalogue of the National Archives of South
Africa:
DEPOT NAB
SOURCE CSO
TYPE LEER
VOLUME_NO 663
SYSTEM 01
REFERENCE 1878/3834
PART 1

DESCRIPTION HIS HONOUR THE
PRESIDENT OF THE ORANGE FREE STATE, BLOEMFONTEIN,
REQUESTS THAT THE MAGISTRATE AT DURBAN BE
EMPOWERED TO TAKE SUCH STEPS AS MAY
LEAD TO THE ARREST OF JACOB SELIGMANN.

STARTING 1878
ENDING 1879

REMARKS G1878/419.

Also I have no idea at all as to whether this refers
to my relative Jacob SELIGMAN(N), described above.
However I would be very grateful if anyone living in
South Africa who visits the archives could take a
look at this record for me.

1. I would like to know why Jacob Seligmann was being
sought for arrest, and whether there is any
information, which might help to identify the
Seligmann in the archival material. Other useful
information would include any clue contained in the
archive as to where exactly the authorities believed
Jacob Seligmann to be living at that time.

2. Rouxville is and was in 1870-80 in the Orange Free
State, whose capital was (is?) Bloemfontein. One
descendant of Jacob SELIGMAN(N) has suggested to me
that his ancestor may have left Rouxville as a result
of tensions (? fighting ?) between the Boers and the
English in the time around 1880? Could this have been
a possible explanation for Jacob's departure? Was
there much fighting around Rouxville in 1879-80?

All the best from
