I am a new researcher who is trying to find information on my father's side
of the family. My grandfather, Morris Purrinson (born about 1887), lived in Poltava Gburynia Perluk (according to my father). Not finding anything with the name Perluk, I am inclined to believe that it may be Priluki. Morris moved to Argentina (Baron de Hirsch land) as a teenager. He subsequently brought over his fiancee, Rose Chaikin (father's name was Leo), who was from the same home town. They emigrated to the US by way of Liverpool in 1910 with my paternal great grandmother, Ava Sokolff. The name when they came to Ellis Island was spelled Purinzon. If anyone has information on these names or can direct me to Baron de Hirsch records for Argentina, I would appreciate it. Rochelle P. Gershenow Potomac, MD USA

Success with Lida District records
#belarus
Samuel Goldfarb <samgo@...>
I am happy to report success concerning vital records for Lida,
Belarus. In going through old copies of Avotaynu, I found an article in the Fall, 1997 issue, Volume XIII, Number 3, written by Harold Rhode, entitled, "Jewish Revision Lists in Lithuanian Archives". He mentioned that some Lida vital records are in the Grodno Archives. I contacted Irene Newhouse who has always been helpful and encouraging to me as I searched Lida records for my family. She directed me to the Web site of the Grodno Archives, which can be reached by: www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Lida-District/whatsnew.htm, looking under November 2003 and clicking there. I then wrote to the director, Karina P. Batrakova, following the directions for making an inquiry. Seven months and $185 later, I received documents that identified 41 members of my Lida family - PUPKO and ZAREINCHANSKY. Many intriguing questions have been answered. I wish everyone the same success. Irene Goldfarb, Princeton, NJ samgo@princeton.edu

1906 Bialystok Pogrom
#poland
David M. Fox <davefox73@...>
Today I received the Fall 2004 issue of Mishpocha, the JGS of Greater
Washington (JGSGW) Newsletter. The cover article is titled "Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States and Russia Related to the Jews: 1866-1906" by Suzan Wynne. The article discusses the contents of a volume she found in National Archives in Washington DC. Many years ago, she asked the National Archives to microfilm the volume. She recently rediscovered the microfilm and has sent one copy to YIVO and a second copy to the JGSGW Library. While I cannot repeat thewhole article, I did want to let everyone in this discussion group to knowthat the microfilm includes an entry dated September 19, 1906 that mentions the pogroms at Bialystok and Siedlice that were going on at the time andthen a telegram detailing the terrible results. If anyone is interested in the history of Bialystok during this period, you might want to contact Suzan Wynne and see if you can get the appropriate pages of the 256 page book (on microfilm). Louis Sallinger from Prussia

Ralph Salinger >from Israel is in despair as his PC crashed.
He is looking for lost information on Louis SALLINGER of London [Digest 18th September] . I am not one of the two kind gentlemen who helped you before, Ralph, but here are some interesting facts on Louis - which you may not already have and may be of interest to others too [i.e. Gersig members]. Louis was already in London living alone in Greenwich and a picture dealer in the early 1870s. He was born in Prussia in Labbenisburg? in 1840. By 1881, Louis was living in Deptford and was a naturalised British Subject [you may be able to find his naturalisation documents at the Public Records Office, Kew] and married to Annie, an English-born wife. His birthplace is given as Syck, Prussia. There were no children, but as he had a servant and visitors and boarders - he must have been quite well-off. In 1891, he is designated as a picture frame maker and in 1901 he is still living in Greenwich with his wife {and two nieces}, and still working as a picture frame maker. He was married in Southwark in December 1878 to Ann Susan Woods. It would be easy to get the marriage certificate and hopefully you will then have the names of his parents and witnesses at the wedding. There was another Prussian SAL{L}INGER living in London called Morris - I presume he was Jewish, born in 1819 in the Duchy of Posen. He was a trimming manufacturer and had 7 children. As he was already a British subject in the early 1870, he must have lived in London for quite a time There is evidence that he married Harriet in London in 1848. Mind-blowing, how one can peep into people's lives nearly 200 years ago! Celia Male [UK]

Seeking DIAMANTMANN and SAXE
#ukraine
samorai <samorai@...>
This is my first query in Ukraine Sig. I have been connected to BOHMOR for 3
years. My interests in the Ukraine centre around the Kiev area and entail at this juncture but two names: 1. DIAMANTMANN (DIAMOND in America) in the Chernigov Gubernia I have the rabbinic certificate of citizen status for Yehuda Leib DIAMONDMAN (10 April 1880 - ), son of Chaim DIAMONDMAN ( - 1905 in Ukraine) and Chane LEVITANSKY (b. in Bobrovice). Communal Rabbi, I. J. Reznikov, is from Koselets (both town and county?) for said birth in Bobrovice (also Bobrowitz, Bobrotse). Document issued on 10 December 1912. Yehuda Leib DIAMOND m. Mania Molly [Malcha] KOFF. Brother of a NOVACK m Kraine DIAMOND. Both KOFFand NOVACK families appear to be in NYC by first decade of 20th c. and may be related. Vital statistics for Leib's siblings exist through family records (all arrived in Montreal during the early part of the first decade of 20th c.): DIAMOND siblings Freyda ( -1953) Kraina ( - 1944) Unknown sister [remained in Ukraine] Ben Zion (1865 - Sam (Zalman) (1870 - Aaron Chaimowitz ( ) Yehuda Leib (1880 - 1953?) Questions: 1. Are the above interchangeable names for same village/town? [Bobrovice, Bobrovitz, Bobrotse]? 2. Is the town of Bobroiske an entirely different place? There is a 2 vol. Pinkas Kehilot Bobroiske. 3. Given the names of Yehuda Leib's parents and their residential location in Koselets, is the search for their birth, marriage, death documentation possible and is it worth the candle? There is a contemporary Diamond who reads Cyrillic. 2. Seeking Morris SAXE, reputedly born in 1878-1879 on Jewish collective called Martinovitch in Kiev area. Search of Ukrainian Jewish collectives does not reveal any Jewish collective by this name. SAXE is apparently shortened surname. Immigrated to Canada and organized Federated Jewish Farmers of Ontario in 1925. CBC documentary entitled "Morris Saxe: A Man of Conscience" was presumably broadcast on 24 January 1997 in the series "Canadian Reflections" but efforts to locate a copy have repeatedly failed (CBC archives don't have it, no record at CBC, although current [2004] Series Director not contacted; Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph - couldn't reach enough Departments by telephone and e-mail elicited no reply, but a copy should be there. Finally, Toronto Jewish Archives don't have a copy and am checking with Canadian Jewish Archives in Montreal. Eleven SAXE families listed in Toronto phonebook - only had time to reach two this summer - no luck). Question: Can anyone suggest how to get hold of a copy of Saxe documentary for viewing purposes? Esp. Toronto, Guelph, Georgetown [Ontario] Genners take note. Interested in contacting contemporary relative, for historical, documentation purposes of Morris SAXE, not necessarily genealogical record. Paul KING Jerusalem, ISRAEL Seeking DIAMANTMANN (Koselets, Bobrovice in Chernigov), KOFF, NOVACK (maybe Chernigov and NYC at turn of 20th c)

Dear Genners,
Though I have posted it already in the past I am counting on new Genners who may have joined the list recently. I am looking for Rolf (Simon) KOENIGSBUCH who was born in Hamburg in 1929 and together with his brother Kurt Max (b.1931) were on the Kindertransport. I have evidence that during the 1960 he lived in the USA in New Jersey and even responded by phone to an ad in the AFBAU publication in the late 60s. He may have been a journalist. He is not a member of the Kindertransport Ass. neither did he particpate in the 50th and 60th Kinder reunions. He may have changed his name because I do not find any KOENIGSBUCH or Kenigsbuch or Konigsbuch in the White Pages. Rolf is a distant cousin of my late mother Sara Koenigsbuch. Please respond privately. Jacob Rosen Jerusalem
