Joan Parker <joanparker@...>

Found this in one of many listed for Danny Kaye in a Google search return

Excerpt:
David Daniel Kaminsky was born on January 18, 1913 in the Brownsville area of
Brooklyn, NY. He was the third and last son of an immigrant Ukrainian tailor, and
the only one born in the United States.

There are plenty more in Google.

Dear Genners

I know that Danny Kaye's original surname was KAMINSKY but does anyone know
where his father was born?

I seem to recall a book I glanced at some years ago (when I wasn't involved
in family research) and I think it said his father was born in the Ukraine.
Has anyone got a book on the life of Danny Kaye which states where his
ancestors came from?

My KAMINSKY grandmother and many of her brothers and sisters and many of
their children had red hair!!!!

Need Help - Polish town name #general

Alan Steinfeld <poohtoes@...>

The arrival record (Ellis Island) for my ancestor (Leibisch SPERBER)
lists his last town of residence as Przyndrel.. On the original
manifest, it appears to be Prryndrel. The ancestor probably came >from
the Krakow area of Poland. I can find no listing for any similar town
in "Where Once We Walked" or the Shtetlseeker website.

Can anyone suggest the correct name for his town of origin?

Thanks,

Alan Steinfeld

Pocket watch in "tula silver" #general

Robert Fraser <robertandginafraser@...>

Hi genners -

I have a pocket watch that belonged to my grandfather, who was
born in Galicia but went to Vienna in the late 19th century.

I have always been told that the watch cover was made of "Tula
silver". I have discovered that tula is a place in Russia, but
does the name have any particular significance or otherwise?

It isn't quite genealogy, but any suggestions will be gratefully
accepted.

To all the Genners who responded to my question, Thank You.
I now have a map where I can locate the areas involved. Now the question is,
since three were all these changes in boundaries, who has the records for
pre-1900 Ungvar and the surrounding communities?

family records #ukraine

Nathan Greenberg <bvjo@...>

It has taken me several years to accumulate the following information
re: my family in Ukraine.

My father immigrated to NYC illegally some time 1876 or 1877. He had
reached the draft age of 12 and his family sent him away to avoid the
army draft. He said that he went to work in a grocery in the city, and
then shipped out to Castle Garden alone, no family or relatives. He
claimed that HIAS got him a job in a grocery and place to live in NYC.
And he used the name "Greenberg".

HIAS has no records for NYC for those years. I have never found any
records anywhere for him. He never told us his original family name. He
said that he continually sent money for his family to immigrate. We
never have found any records for his parents, and four sisters.

In 1907 the last of the family, his older brother, wife and seven
children arrived NYC. Using a name casually mentioned by his sister, I
found the manifest of the ship containing this family.

Now we knew the correct family name, "Batschkurinsky" as spelled in the
ships manifest.

And the city of origin was listed as "Uman".

I have found the NYC marriage license for the oldest son where his city
of birth was written as Cominsk Podolia, then scratched out, and
rewritten as Kiev.

I have found the citizenship papers for next oldest son dated 1923 and
the birth city is listed as "Teplik".

In other words, they were trying their best to obfuscate their records.

I have used two different researchers in Ukraine and no records have
been found anywhere.

The best leads received were that the family name originated in a
village "Bashkurin" and that a person

named Batschkurinsky was part owner of a house in Dashev in 1897.

Perhaps a reader might have a suggestion as to how to continue this
saga.

Hello folks,

I'm looking for:

1. some pages >from a 1912 Ellis Island manifest which aren't even available
usiing Morse's Missing Manifests, but can be found on film. If there is an
"X" before either of the two names that I'm interested in, I'd like you to
also find their entries on the List of Detained Aliens at the end of that
ship's pages. They are listed by LIST and LINE nos. I have the text
version of the manifest page, the reel and other nos.

2. I'm looking for a few Naturalization Records in the Southern and Eastern
U.S. District Courts. I've reviewed partial indexes to both Courts.

Details will be provided to respondents to avoid needless duplication of
